According the developing accounts, NJ Sen. Bob Menendez has a special relationship with mega-donor Dr. Salomon Melgen. In addition to campaign contributions, Dr. Melgen allegedly flew Sen. Menendez to the Dominican Republic on his private plane and may have provided the Senator with prostitutes. That soap opera, though, obscures a more troubling connection. According to a report in the Washington Post, Sen. Menendez intervened at least twice on behalf of Melgen in a billing dispute he had with Medicare. Since at least 2009, Dr. Melgen, a Florida eye surgeon

Sure, you might be cool with Barack Obama calling up a drone strike on an American citizen. But don´t forget: a Republican [shudder!] could become President! That was the Washington Post editorialist Jonathan Capehart´s warning to Donny Deutsch when the ad-man-turned-pundit proclaimed he had no problem with the president, under desperate circumstances, ordering a drone strike against an American. View the video after the jump. Watch Capehart create the Republican-president-as-bogyeman scenario.

The manifesto written by murder suspect and LAPD office Chris Dorner contains some bizarre ramblings about how much Dorner loves media personalities like Chris Matthews, Piers Morgan, and Ellen DeGeneres. Sean Hannity tonight noticed that these details have gone largely unreported in the media, whereas if he had been a fan of right-wing TV hosts, the liberal media would have been eager to report on it to death. (Snip) Hannity pointed out how Dorner is a big fan of liberal politicians and celebrities, while finding the NRA a deplorable organization. Hannity remarked, “don’t expect

Joining President Barack Obama at Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast was Dr. Benjamin Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon with Johns Hopkins Hospital. For 25 minutes at the breakfast, Carson fearlessly articulated a series of conservative principles and reform proposals. He lambasted political correctness, proposed a market-based health care program, and urged pro-growth tax code reform in order to bring down the debt and deficit. (Snip) After attacking politically correct speech as “dangerous” and a “horrible thing,” Carson turned to education. He discussed the scholarship program he manages which is directed at troubled youth.

An asteroid half the size of a U.S. football field will pass between Earth and orbiting satellites next week, sparing the human race from the fate suffered by dinosaurs, NASA said. The 150-foot diameter asteroid, named 2012 DA14, will pass about 17,000 miles above Earth on Feb. 15 -- lower than the orbits of some satellites -- in the closest recorded approach of an object of its size. It will travel at 7.8 kilometers a second (17,400 miles an hour), or about eight times the speed of a rifle shot, NASA scientists said yesterday.

NEW YORK - A long-forgotten piece of America´s military history is going up for sale. The original smaller statue of the iconic raising of the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima in 1945 is expected to fetch up to $1.8 million later this month at a New York auction dedicated to World War II artifacts. That such a statue even exists is news to all but the most ardent history buffs. Most Americans are familiar with the 32-foot-tall Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va. (snip) Less well-known is the 12 1/2-foot-tall statue created soon after the event.

A spokesman for former President George H.W. Bush confirmed that authorities have begun an investigation but declined further comment. "We do not comment on matters under criminal investigation," spokesman Jim McGrath said. According to the Smoking Gun website, the unidentified hacker was able to compromise emails, telephone numbers and home addresses for dozens of Bush family members - including both former presidents. The hacked emails were sent between 2009 and 2012. The hacker also seized several photographs, including at least one taken of the elder Bush during his recent hospital stay in Houston. From the loony regime that just figured how to shoot a monkey into space: Iran now claims it has its own homemade, radar-beating stealth fighter jet. But aviation and defense experts say the tiny one-seater looks like a toy and might not even be able to fly — calling it a “laughable fake.” Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad unveiled the Qaher F313 at a Tehran hangar last week and called it “one of the most advanced” aircraft in the world. But the experts said it was too small for a human pilot —

Three years ago, midway through his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama took on the Supreme Court of the United States of America. “With all due deference to the separation of powers,” the president said, “last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests—including foreign corporations—to spend without limit in our elections. [Applause.] I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. Former LAPD officer Chris Dorner — accused of killing a young couple and firing at police officers — apparently sent a parcel to CNN host Anderson Cooper at his office. As the manhunt for Dorner continues, Cooper shared information about the package he received on his show Thursday night. (Snip) The package included a DVD, a bullet-riddled LAPD souvenir coin, and a note that read, in part, “I never lied.” The coin was wrapped in duct tape, with the handwritten words, “Thanks but no thanks, Will Bratton” (Bratton was LAPD chief until 2009) — and

Hollywood legend and Republican supporter Clint Eastwood told CNBC that Washington gridlock is sending the nation racing towards another contentious debt deadline. "It´s almost like they don´t give a damn," he said, in a "Squawk Box" interview that aired Friday. The Oscar-winning director who´s also known for his tough-guy roles asked rhetorically, "If they don´t give a damn, why did they expect anybody else to?" With the deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" barely in the rearview mirror, President Barack Obama and Republican leaders are on the clock again, scrambling to compromise on a package

Remember back in what was it - 2006 or thereabouts - when left-leaning critics of President Bush couldn´t stop talking about how nothing was more red, white, and blue than good old-fashioned American dissent? Why, our very country was founded by an act of dissent, didn´t you know! So back when Vice President Dick Cheney - routinely likened to Darth Vader and Voldemort - was running things, the very air was filled with cries of "not in our name" and all that, because it was so damned important that the United States not contravene its

A national movement to abolish capital punishment is growing, state by state. Maryland is expected soon to become the 18th state to repeal death-penalty laws. Nevertheless, taking a life for taking a life still seems like a good idea for millions of Americans. But capital punishment is not what it used to be, when the gallows was a scene of commerce and merriment. Seventeenth-century England, whence comes so much of our law and culture, hanged evildoers with the enthusiasm of modern Texas.

He´s been hit by Democrats and the press for being aloof and anti-social, a president with a leaden touch even when it comes to his friends. But in just two sentences about House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi yesterday during an address to House Democrats holding a retreat in Leesburg, Va., he moved to change that old image. "I love Nancy Pelosi," he said. Then, tapping into "Grandma Mimi´s" real passion, he won the crowd over, saying, "She generates good-looking grandbabies. They´re all so handsome and sharp and beautiful." Speaking off-the-cuff, he indirectly acknowledged criticism that he

In a puzzling, unexplained development, the Obama administration has been buying and storing vast amounts of ammunition in recent months, with the Department of Homeland Security just placing another order for an additional 21.6 million rounds. Several other federal agencies also began buying large quantities of bullets last year. The Social Security Administration, for instance, not normally considered on the frontlines of anything but dealing with seniors, said its purchases of millions of rounds were for special agents´ quarterly weapons qualifications.[Snip] But DHS has been silent about its need for numerous orders of bullets in the multiple millions.

Several Republican governors have embraced a key pillar of President Obama’s health-care law: Extending Medicaid to 17 million Americans. Many Republicans balked at the expansion when the Supreme Court made the Medicaid expansion optional in its ruling last in the summer. Supporters of the law worried that the opposition could undermine the entire health-care overhaul by shrinking the pool of Americans who would gain coverage. But six Republican governors have since come to back the program, including Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday and Ohio’s John Kasich on Monday. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer announced her support in mid-January.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg´s super political action committee has spent at least $660,000 for 12 days of TV ads blasting Democratic congressional candidate Debbie Halvorson´s past support from the National Rifle Association, records filed by local affiliates of the four major networks showed Thursday. When its current ad buy ends Sunday, the Independence USA super PAC will have aired 574 half-minute broadcast TV commercials to influence the outcome of the 2nd Congressional District special election, records show. Democrats kick puppies. No, really. Look what they just did to Ed Cox — the hapless, harmless, endlessly affable chairman of New York’s Republican State Committee. This week Cox accused Gov. Cuomo of cheap grandstanding on issues such as guns and gay marriage while ignoring his real responsibilities. “New York,” said Cox, “has a governor with neither the experience nor the guts to spend his political capital on the necessary steps required to create jobs.” He ticked off some things the governor said he wasn’t going to do but did

President Barack Obama´s second term just got under way, but it´s outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who is far more popular, according to a new Quinnipiac poll testing politicians´ favorability ratings. Need evidence that House Republicans are unpopular? House Speaker John Boehner sits at the bottom of the list, by far, in terms of net favorability. The poll, which surveyed 1,772 registered voters nationally, was conducted between January 30 and February 4. It has a margin of error of +/- 2.3 percentage points. Here´s how all the nine politicians tested fared, from most popular to least.

It should scare anyone with a pulse. Krugman, after speaking at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue in Washington, D.C., was asked about the debt crisis. After arguing it´s no big deal in the near term, Krugman admitted that "Eventually we do have a problem. The population is getting older, health care costs are rising ... . Former President George H.W. Bush is aged and ailing. So it is precisely now that we need to voice our appreciation for him -- one of America´s greatest one-term presidents, along with James K. Polk. Polk practically doubled the size of the continental United States between 1845 and 1849, becoming the individual embodiment of Manifest Destiny.
