Traditional Southern diet, stroke

Traditional Southern diets may be linked to a higher risk of stroke, a researcher said at a conference on Thursday. The lead researcher, Suzanne Judd, a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Alabama, said her study is the first large-scale effort to look at stroke and a diet of such foods as fried chicken and fish, bacon, ham and sweet teas. “Fatty foods are high in cholesterol, sugary drinks are linked to diabetes and salty foods lead to high blood pressure,” Judd said in a statement. Those are all factors in the risk of cardiovascular disease.

A Washington couple were left stunned after their server handed them the bill for their family´s dinner - and they saw they had been given a $4 discount for their ´Well Behaved Kids´. Laura King and her husband took their three children, aged two, three and eight, to an Italian restaurant in Poulsbo to enjoy an early-evening meal last Friday. As they tucked into their feast of pizza, pasta and mushroom ragu, the family discussed planets, racecars, zebra jokes, and commented on the warm decor of the restaurant, Mrs King said. ´They were just being their normal selves,´

Currently there´s a murder spree unfolding in and around the city of Los Angeles. The suspect, Chris Dorner, is a fired Los Angeles police officer who reportedly left a manifesto behind. In it, he expresses his admiration for many members of the elite media, including some of NBC´s highest profile stars: Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough, Brian Williams, Meredith Viera, and Tom Brokaw. Here´s a transcript of NBC´s Meredith Viera introducing a segment that links Sarah Palin to Jared Loughner´s shooting

I’m broadly on the side of John Bolton, Rich Lowry, Andy McCarthy (on NRO), and Max Boot (on the Commentary website, Contentions) in their support for the Obama administration’s justification for drone attacks designed to kill Al Qaeda leaders, whether or not they are U.S. citizens. Admittedly, one has to grit one’s teeth and mutter this support from the side of one’s mouth. And I sympathise with Pete Wehner’s desire to convict the President of hypocrisy since he has offered no retraction or qualification of his earlier denunciations of the Bush administrations

Winslow ’100 percent’ running

Massachusetts state Rep. Dan Winslow (R) has decided to run for the Senate in Massachusetts, he said Thursday. He’s the first Republican to officially throw his hat in the ring. “I’m going to be 100 percent running for the U.S. Senate,” Winslow, a former aide to then-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, told the Boston Globe. “This is a heavy lift. I’m going to give this race everything I’ve got.” Winslow’s decision is not a surprise. He announced earlier this week that he was forming an exploratory committee. The GOP faces a steep uphill climb in the race.

Fox News Poll: Voters say

President Barack Obama will be speaking to a gloomy electorate when he delivers his State of the Union address on Tuesday. Twice as many voters believe the country is weaker, rather than stronger, since Obama took office. In addition, by a 52-40 percent margin voters think the worst is yet to come on the economy. And more than eight in 10 disagree with the president’s notion that the government doesn’t have a spending problem. These are some of the findings from the latest Fox News poll released Thursday.

Texas would have the toughest anti-drone legislation in the country under a bill filed by State Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Terrell). 1200 WOAI´s Michael Board reports that Gooden has introduced a measure which would outlaw the use of drones by individuals, or state or federal law enforcement. Gooden tells 1200 WOAI news that his bill would have limited exceptions, including allowing drones within 25 miles of the Rio Grande for drug and illegal immigrant interdiction programs, or for use by law enforcement with a valid search or arrest warrant, with ´probable cause to believe that a person has committed

Conservatives might take heart from a recent poll showing a decline in Americans´ trust in government. But Chris Cillizza sees it as a "depressing reality." So wrote Cillizza in his "Fix" column in today´s Washington Post. Indeed, Cillizza´s headline, "Are we in the end times of trust in government?", suggests that he finds the development nothing short of potentially apocalyptic. Let´s consider what Thomas Jefferson´s had to say about the need for a healthy distrust of government—and speculate as to why the polling news has Chris bummed out. More after the jump

The Family Research Council shooter, who pleaded guilty today to a terrorism charge, picked his target off a "hate map" on the website of the ultra-liberal Southern Poverty Law Center which is upset with the conservative group´s opposition to gay rights. Floyd Lee Corkins II pleaded guilty to three charges including a charge of committing an act of terrorism related to the August 15, 2012 injuring of FRC´s guard. It came down to Arkansas, Miami and Wisconsin, he said, and then Arkansas and Miami, and he picked the Razorbacks, much to the chagrin of Andrea McDonald, whose lawyer Thursday in a statement categorized an extremely happy time for Alex Collins as “a difficult time” for her. “I always wanted to be my own man, make my own decision,”

While we pray for those murdered and everyone who might be in danger, we cannot forget that the media and its allies in the Democratic Party have set a standard when it comes to reporting on the possible political motives of mass murderers. Though they generally make things up to turn the death of innocents into a talking point against the Right, it´s still the left who set this precedent. And what do you know, Chris Dorner, the former-police officer suspected of being behind the murder rampage presently unfolding in Los Angeles, has apparently

Iran: Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran´s supreme leader, has rejected Vice President Biden´s weekend offer — yet another one — of direct nuclear talks. Why is it so tough to accept that Tehran´s rulers are fanatics? One of the many disturbing things we have learned about Barack Obama and those who surround him is that they worship words and gestures and visuals, placing the utmost faith in their value as tools. The president´s own exercise of power is wielded through the use of the equivalent of junk food company slogans and logos: "Change," "Forward!"

Islamofascism: Islamists have launched a hostile takeover of American language through an increasingly aggressive and organized censorship campaign that threatens free speech. Over the past few weeks, there have been an alarming number of cases of Muslim pressure groups trying to force Americans to conform to a pro-Islamic speech code. They´ve insisted on censoring any speech or expression that offends them, including TV ads, Christian symbols, speeches and even parts of speech. In some cases, the targets of their wrath have caved in to their demands.

Unlike the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, which faces no existential threat, our Asian ally faces an increasingly belligerent and well-armed China. Yet only one gets the latest weaponry and the question is why. On Jan. 30, a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer in the East China Sea near the disputed Senkaku Islands just north of Taiwan was "painted" by fire control-radar from two People´s Liberation Army warships, believed to be the Chinese frigates Linyungang and Wenzhou. Richard Gettler, the schizophrenic man´s father, gave testimony that supported Dorner´s claim.

Why conservatives should

I am pleased that the conversation on immigration reform started in earnest last week after a bipartisan group of senators unveiled a set of principles that will guide the debate moving forward. Despite Senator Marco Rubio’s interviews with Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin, a number of my colleagues in the conservative movement remain skeptical. That is understandable given Congress’s history. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan championed amnesty for over one million unauthorized immigrants in exchange for significant reform — which would have included a thoughtful process moving forward that would restrain, if not completely stop,

By any objective measure, Sen. Marco Rubio had a big week. It was announced he would give the Republican response to the State of the Union. He was the guest at the first-ever “BuzzFeed Brews.” National Journal explained why he’s “Not Your Grandfather’s Republican.” And, oh yeah, he’s on the cover of TIME magazine. This is all impressive. But it’s also presents a challenge. Republicans need and want a leader who is capable of occasionally garnering favorable press. On the other hand, you can expect some conservatives to be suspicious of a Republican who gets too much positive coverage

A Southwest Side alderman’s plan to prevent a return of rampant drunken misbehavior at the South Side Irish Parade moved a step closer to approval Thursday. Ald. Matthew O´Shea´s proposal would stiffen penalties for violations near a parade route. The annual Irish-themed parade was canceled for two years following a series of fights and arrests in the neighborhood around the parade route on South Western Avenue. The parade returned last year as an event organizers termed more “family friendly,” and O´Shea hopes to keep it that way. Under O´Shea´s plan, maximum fines for having open liquor on the street and public

If you can´t force people to do what you want, force them to buy insurance: That seems to be the strategy of the liberal left in the Obama era. We refer not only to the ObamaCare health-insurance mandate but to the latest bright idea under consideration in mostly Democrat-dominated state capitals. "Democratic lawmakers proposed legislation Tuesday that would require California gun owners to buy liability insurance to cover damages or injuries caused by their weapons," FoxNews.com reports. The idea isn´t brand new:
