The GOP´s "big tent" thinking is alive and well. On Wednesday, the Republican State Leadership Committee launched the Future Majority Caucus to support women, blacks or Americans of Hispanic and Asian descent running for office on the state level. The mission statement: The new caucus will expand the scope of recruitment and support for candidates "to more closely reflect the diversity of our nation." Running it all: that would be Ed Gillespie, who has returned to chair the committee itself after a year as senior advisor with Mitt Romney´s presidential campaign. He has a full plate.

Washington - President Obama nominated a former petroleum engineer and commercial banker who is also a conservationist and chief executive of an environmentally conscious retailer to lead the Interior Department on Wednesday, making an unorthodox selection for his first female nominee to his second-term Cabinet. Sally Jewell, president and chief executive of Recreational Equipment Inc., has no government credentials and little public policy experience. (Snip) In announcing his choice, Obama cast Jewell as someone who would seek a balance. "She knows the link between conservation and

Karl Rove — "The Architect," as President George W. Bush called him — crafted Bush´s two presidential campaigns and served as a key player in Bush´s White House. Now, with an assist from The New York Times, Rove is presenting himself as a conservative leader. On Sunday, the Times reported that American Crossroads, the super PAC Rove started, was beginning a new program called "The Conservative Victory Project." This project, as the Times put it, will "recruit seasoned candidates and protect Senate incumbents from challenges by far-right conservatives and tea party enthusiasts." But Rove is no conservative.

Floyd Lee Corkins II, who pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday to the Aug. 15 shooting at the Family Research Council (FRC), identified his target on the website of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which includes a “Hate Map” that labels the FRC as “Anti-Gay.” As the court filing’s “Statement of Offense” for United States of America v. Floyd Lee Corkins II reads, “He was a political activist and considered the FRC a lobbying group. He committed the shooting for political reasons. He had identified the FRC as an anti-gay organization

The Boy Scouts of America, which confirmed last summer its policy barring openly gay people from participation, then said last week that it was reconsidering the ban, announced Wednesday that it would postpone a decision once more, until May, as talk of gay men and lesbians in the ranks has roiled a storied organization that carries deep emotional connection and nostalgia for millions of Americans. An end to the national ban, which the United States Supreme Court said in 2000 was legal free speech by a private organization, would create a new moment of risk, experimentation and change,

Two FBI sources have told The Daily Caller that the bureau’s inquiry into Democratic New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is now based in New Jersey, not Miami. One added that pressure is mounting from the highest levels of the Justice Department to pursue the investigation. The change of focus away from the bureau’s Miami field office indicates that the government is focused primarily on Sen. Menendez — and not on his longtime donor Dr. Salomon Melgen, as political observers have speculated. Menendez is embroiled in a scandal sparked by allegations that he slept with

The $10,000 bachelor´s degree could be coming to a campus near you. What began as a challenge from billionaire Microsoft founder Bill Gates to make college more affordable is now catching on with governors eager to stem spiraling tuition costs and mounting student debt.[Snip] The bargain baccalaureate could prove popular with students and parents, frustrated with ever-mounting tuition costs that can´t guarantee jobs for graduates. Reversing its earlier course, the White House will now brief members of Congress on a memo detailing the justification for drone strikes against U.S. citizens, an administration official said Wednesday night. "Today, as part of the president´s ongoing commitment to consult with Congress on national security matters, the president directed the Department of Justice to provide the congressional Intelligence committees access to classified Office of Legal Counsel advice related to the subject of the Department of Justice White Paper," the official said. Cape Canaveral, Fla. - Earth-like worlds may be closer and more plentiful than anyone imagined. Astronomers reported Wednesday that the nearest Earth-like planet may be just 13 light-years away — or some 77 trillion miles. That planet hasn´t been found yet, but should be there based on the team´s study of red dwarf stars. Galactically speaking, that´s right next door. If our Milky Way galaxy were shrunk to the size of the United States, the distance between Earth and its closest Earth-like neighbor would be the span of New York's Central Park, said Harvard University graduate student

Rule Of Law: A federal judge rules that border agents can proceed with a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of DHS directives ordering the agents to break the law — or have their careers threatened. When those charged with enforcing existing federal law on immigration have to sue their bosses to be allowed to do their jobs, it doesn´t say much for the prospects of immigration reform being hammered out in Congress, allegedly a legislative priority of a president who picks when, how and if he´ll enforce the law. On Friday, Federal Judge Reed O´Conner ruled that 10 Immigration and

Who believed President Obama when he swore that under the Democrats´ health care overhaul, "If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan"? No one should have. The promises of ObamaCare have been empty, cynically made for political expediency with the understanding that the public has a short memory. But this one lingers, as it should, because it was so obviously faithless the moment it was uttered. Some politicians will say most anything to get elected or to pass legislation. Truth is optional.

Washington is in a fit of collective terror over the "sequester," aka the impending across-the-board spending cuts. Trying to explain the zero economic growth at the end of 2012, White House spokesman Jay Carney blamed Republicans for "talk about letting the sequester kick in as though that were an acceptable thing." He left out that President Obama proposed the sequester in 2011. Then on Tuesday Mr. Obama warned about "the threat of massive automatic cuts that have already started to affect business decisions." He proposed tax increases and "smaller" spending cuts to

Islamism: A long-feared Mideast nightmare is beginning, thanks to a poisonous mixture of dormant historical forces and misguided U.S. policy. Cairo and Tehran, once America´s allies, are forming a new axis of evil. It would be bad enough if two once-dependable U.S. allies in the most strategically vital region of the world were becoming enemies of the West in isolation. But the top-level meeting of the Middle East´s two most populous Islamic powers takes place as a historic upheaval within the region continues — a disruption largely of President Obama´s doing. Who wouldn´t want to live in Washington? It´s a wonderful world, a place where every problem of life can be reduced to just two words. Gun control. Immigration reform. Climate control. The deficit, which of course can be solved in two words: a "balanced approach." Things so hard haven´t been so simple since Tinker Bell taught children to fly in "Peter Pan," also with two words—pixie dust. Gun control stands out. After the Newtown killings in December, President Obama channeled a national gun-control law through Joe Biden.

Hundreds of people were fighting eachother on the streets of Athens during a food giveaway, prompting an outcry over the growing desperation created by economic crisis. Farmers protesting against government cuts gave away 50 tonnes of free vegetables and fruit in the Greek capital earlier today, causing chaos in the streets as impoverished and hungry people elbowed their way to the stalls. Startling images of Greeks struggling to seize bags of tomatoes and leeks thrown from a truck outside the Agriculture Ministry have sparked further debate about poverty in the debt-ridden nation. ‘These images make me angry.

Speaking about outgoing Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, President Obama reminded reporters that the family of the former U.S. Senator from Colorado was of Spanish descendent – dating back to the 16th century. “His ancestors were living here before the Mayflower set sail,” Obama said. “As he explains it — and relevant, as we are working to get immigration reform passed — his family did not cross the border, the border crossed them. And that’s why, when I needed somebody to lead Interior, I didn’t have to look very far.”

(Jerusalem) - A research center that Syria said had been hit by an Israeli air strike last week appears to have remained unscathed in the attack, according to satellite images broadcast by Israeli television on Wednesday. Diplomats, Syrian rebels and security sources said Israeli jets had bombed a convoy near the Lebanese border last week, apparently hitting weapons destined for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which fought a 34-day war with Israel in 2006. Syria denied the assertions, saying the target was the Jamraya military research complex on the northwestern fringes of Damascus, 8 miles from the border.

Washington countering the Republican-led opposition to President Barack Obama´s nominee for defense secretary is a less flashy but powerful constituency: military veterans. Veterans´ organizations have praised Chuck Hagel, a twice-wounded combat veteran of Vietnam and deputy administrator in President Ronald Reagan´s Veterans Administration. The Veterans of Foreign Wars has called him uniquely qualified to become Pentagon chief. The Military Officers Association of America said his experience gives him "a range of perspectives." The American Legion said he was a longtime advocate for veterans. The organizations, which as congressionally chartered, stopped short of an outright endorsement.
