Speaking about outgoing Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, President Obama reminded reporters that the family of the former U.S. Senator from Colorado was of Spanish descendent – dating back to the 16th century. “His ancestors were living here before the Mayflower set sail,” Obama said. “As he explains it — and relevant, as we are working to get immigration reform passed — his family did not cross the border, the border crossed them. And that’s why, when I needed somebody to lead Interior, I didn’t have to look very far.”

"Listen, we´re delighted that he´s coming," Oren said on MSNBC´s "The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd. "President Obama was always welcomed in Israel. (Jerusalem) - A research center that Syria said had been hit by an Israeli air strike last week appears to have remained unscathed in the attack, according to satellite images broadcast by Israeli television on Wednesday. Diplomats, Syrian rebels and security sources said Israeli jets had bombed a convoy near the Lebanese border last week, apparently hitting weapons destined for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which fought a 34-day war with Israel in 2006. Syria denied the assertions, saying the target was the Jamraya military research complex on the northwestern fringes of Damascus, 8 miles from the border.

Washington countering the Republican-led opposition to President Barack Obama´s nominee for defense secretary is a less flashy but powerful constituency: military veterans. Veterans´ organizations have praised Chuck Hagel, a twice-wounded combat veteran of Vietnam and deputy administrator in President Ronald Reagan´s Veterans Administration. The Veterans of Foreign Wars has called him uniquely qualified to become Pentagon chief. The Military Officers Association of America said his experience gives him "a range of perspectives." The American Legion said he was a longtime advocate for veterans. The organizations, which as congressionally chartered, stopped short of an outright endorsement.

Regulars around the state Capitol will soon be seeing something different: Troopers carrying military-style assault rifles. The upgrade in firepower isn’t precisely incident specific – but you can hear echoes of Sandy Hook Elementary School in the explanation from Col. Mark McDonough, commissioner of the state Department of Public Safety. We were outside the Senate chamber, and McDonough pointed to the rotunda below us: “See all those children down there?” he asked. The Capitol is routinely filled with students on field trips this time of year. Officers once armed only with handguns

“I’ve offered sensible reforms to Medicare and other entitlements, and my health-care proposals achieve the same amount of savings by the beginning of the next decade as the reforms that have been proposed by the bipartisan Bowles-Simpson fiscal commission.”— President Obama, remarks to reporters, Feb. 5, 2013. People in Washington can debate forever who is responsible for the sequester. We previously documented how reporting by Bob Woodward shows this originally was a White House idea, but then lawmakers in both parties embraced it. But when the president met with reporters Tuesday to discuss the looming sequester,

Cote, a New Hampshire native and head of the New Jersey-based Fortune 100 firm. “At the end of the day, I’ve had some horrible experiences in Massachusetts so far.” Cote, who serves on the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform and was named co-chair of the U.S.-India CEO Forum by President Obama, said he was reluctant to expand or even do business

Earth-like worlds may be closer and more plentiful than anyone imagined. Astronomers reported Wednesday that the closest Earth-like planet may be just 13 light years away. That planet hasn´t been found yet, but should be there based on the team´s study of red dwarf stars. Galactically speaking, it´s a stroll across the park. "We now know the rate of occurrence of habitable planets around the most common stars in our galaxy," said study co-author David Charbonneau. "That rate implies that it will be significantly easier to search for life beyond the solar system than we previously thought."

More than seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans, federal grant funds marked for a nature center in the city have yet to be spent, leading federal watchdogs to recommend the revocation of some of those funds. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded $12.3 million in disaster assistance funds to the Audubon Commission, a division of the city of New Orleans. The commission administers a number of nature-related attractions in the city, including a zoo, an aquarium, and the Audubon Nature Center. Headline corrected.

The Palestinian Authority Wednesday welcomed US President Barak Obama´s plan to visit the region next month and expressed hope that it would mark the beginning of a new US policy toward the Israeli-Arab conflict. Meanwhile, the White House said Wednesday that Obama would not be bringing with him a new Middle East peace initiative. However, PA officials said it was still unclear whether Obama would meet with PA President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. The officials said that the meeting could take place in Jericho or Bethlehem for "security reasons." Nabil Abu Rudaineh, spokesman for PA President Mahmoud Abbas,

Allegations of liberal media bias are almost constant in the conservative press, but their intensity has increased since President Obama and Hillary Clinton appeared together on 60 Minutes, where interviewer Steve Kroft posed "softball" questions that were almost comically obsequious. "Mr. Kroft, as embarrassing as his interview was, is merely symptomatic of a larger phenomenon: the unprecedented swooning and cheerleading by the press for Barack Obama," Peter Wehner wrote in Commentary, echoing an argument voiced by many on the right. He posits that the rise of conservative media outlets like Fox News may have triggered a liberal backlash.

The ambassador stressed that Mazaheri is an advisor to Iranian company Kayson, which is currently building some 17,000 homes in Venezuela and has already completed the construction of additional 10,000.

According to newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, Lula presented the proposal once again last week in Havana, as he met with Chávez´s daughter Rosa Virginia Chávez; her husband, Minister of Science and Technology Jorge Arreaza, and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elías Jaua. "Lula da Silva again suggested that the Venezuelan president, hospitalized in Cuba since last December, considers treatment

About a third of the way into in a Department of Justice white paper explaining why and when the President can kill American citizens, there is a citation that should give a reader pause. It comes in a section in which the author of the document, which was given to members of the Senate Intelligence and Judiciary committees last year—and obtained by Michael Isikoff, of NBC, on Monday—says that this power extends into every country in the world other than the United States, well beyond those where we are engaged in hostilities.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday announced a probe into political "crimes and assassinations" that took place before Hugo Chavez was elected president in 1999. The goal is to investigate alleged political murders committed starting in 1958, when a military dictatorship ended and Venezuela´s main parties reached an agreement resulting in two center-right parties, COPEI and Accion Democratica, dominating Venezuelan politics. Chavez and his supporters have long railed against the "rancid bourgeoisie" in those parties -- and link them directly to opposition leader Henrique Capriles, a former COPEI legislator.

A massive crowd has converged on Annapolis Wednesday to rally against a proposal by Maryland Gov. Martin O´Malley that would ban assault weapons and require residents to obtain a license before purchasing handguns. Thousands of Second Amendment advocates gathered outside the State House to show their disapproval in advance of a Senate hearing on the legislation to be held Wednesday afternoon. “Criminals love gun control,” read one sign at the rally. “It makes their job safer.” The gun-rights rally came as President Obama was also in the Maryland state capital for the day, meeting privately with

Rupert Murdoch´s News International is making a concerted effort to close down the News of the World phone-hacking saga, agreeing out-of-court settlements on 143 of 165 outstanding civil damages cases it is facing in the high court ahead of a key hearing before a judge on Friday. However, lawyers acting for alleged phone-hacking victims say News International will be unable to finally draw a line under the scandal, as police are still in the process of informing victims. At least eight new claims are being prepared for Mr Justice Vos´s court hearing on Friday, including cases brought by former Crystal Palace

I passed through Los Angeles recently on my way to the Sundance Film Festival. I don’t know the place well, but it always feels to me as if it is in limbo and has never grown into a proper city: a municipal playground, populated by restless kidults. Here, people dine at seven and sleep by nine, ferried around in cars, sipping sodas, suspended in a make-believe world, poised in that fake calm between a toddler’s fall and ensuing screams. Its transient, unevolved quality may have something to do with it being a temporary home

After four exhausting years, Hillary Clinton leaves the State Department with an impressive record of air miles logged, town-hall meetings held, important but neglected issues highlighted, international crises defused, gaffes avoided, citizens of the United States and the world wowed, and White House policies capably carried out. When Clinton and President Obama recently sat down for an interview on “60 Minutes,” they all but held hands, swearing deathless affection and respect, and they seemed to mean it.
