Survey: No one confirms owning

Daily Record [Parsippany NJ], by Malia Rulon Herman    Original Article

WASHINGTON — Gun ownership is low and support for legislation to reduce gun violence is high among New Jersey’s congressional lawmakers, according to a survey by the Gannett Washington Bureau and USA Today. It’s unclear if anyone in the delegation owns a gun. Of the 14 delegation members, nine said they don’t own one, three declined to say either way, and two did not respond to the survey. Among those who did not respond or declined to say were three lawmakers — Reps. Frank LoBiondo, Scott Garrett and Jon Runyan, all Republicans — who have an “A” rating

Gym shoe tax could fund

SPRINGFIELD— Buying a new pair of running shoes in Illinois could cost a quarter more if a measure to tax gym shoes gets traction at the Capitol. The idea behind the 25-cent shoe tax is to pump more money into programs that help high-school dropouts from low-income homes get jobs in the construction trades or get back on track to attend college. "There are young people everywhere that are looking for a positive outlet that they might not find otherwise," said Rep. Will Davis, a Homewood Democrat who´s sponsoring the shoe tax.

Yesterday I published the following story:  Breaking: Obama DOJ Green Lights Drone Strikes Against Americans (Snip) Thousands of drone strikes have been initiated by the Obama White House via his now infamous “Kill List” where it is said, the president personally reviews the names and related information of those who wants assassinated via a drone attack.  While that scenario alone should be enough to create outrage among the Mainstream Media and Barack Obama’s liberal/progressive supporters, the actual scenario is much-much worse.  What yesterday’s story outlines is an administration that has given itself the authority to bomb American citizens

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama today walked away from a roomful of journalists, leaving Jay Carney to evade numerous media questions about the administration’s semi-secret, closed-door process of killing American citizens who are tied to jihad. The numerous questions were prompted by the release late Monday of the administration’s legal brief explaining why it has the legal and presidential authority to kill overseas Americans in al-Qaida, even without a trial or public due process. “I think you’ve seen in the way that this president

A group of children from Newtown, Connecticut are going to sing live at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night. The 21 children, some of whom attend Sandy Hook Elementary School which was the scene of the tragic mass shooting nearly two months ago, recorded a version of ´Over the Rainbow´ and will be performing at the music awards show. American Idol host Ryan Seacrest will be flying a crew to Connecticut and plans to interview the children via satellite during the red-carpet segment of the broadcast, said Tim Hayes, who co-produced the recording.

A powerful earthquake off the Solomon Islands generated a tsunami that damaged dozens of homes in the South Pacific island chain Wednesday, but authorities cancelled warnings for tsunamis on more distant coasts. Local officials in the Solomons reported two 1.5-meter (4 foot, 11-inch) waves hit the western side of Santa Cruz Island, damaging around 50 homes and properties, said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister. There were no reports of injuries or deaths. Villagers were heading for higher ground as a precaution, Herming said.

Ronald Reagan can count 40 states that still remember the Gipper fondly. On the eve of his 102nd birthday Wednesday, 40 states--a record--have proclaimed February 6 "Ronald Reagan Day." Eight Democratic governors have refused to recognize Reagan Day and two others are on the fence. The Reagan honor is also a tribute to Grover Norquist, head of Americans for Tax Reform. He also heads the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project which asks the nation´s governors to set the day aside for Reagan.(Snip) Here is the Reagan Legacy Project´s list of those backing--and rejecting--Reagan Day:

Energy: The former Golden State is floating in debt, even as it sits on two-thirds of America´s shale oil reserves locked in a formation four times the size of the one that sparked North Dakota´s economic boom. North Dakota is now the largest oil producer in the country after Texas with a monthly oil output of about 20 million barrels. North Dakota´s oil boom accounts for 11% of U.S. oil production, and it is the impetus behind the state´s $3.8 billion surplus and an unemployment rate of just 3.2%, the lowest in the nation.

Republicans have happened upon a felicitous new strategy for reviving their party from its depressed state: They need only think happy thoughts. At a retreat for Republican leaders last month, former House speaker Newt Gingrich told them to “learn to be a happy party” and a “cheerful” one, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said they should be a party “that smiles.” Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal told his fellow Republicans to talk about “just how incredibly bright America’s future can be.” In other words, Republicans will win elections if only they can stop being so dour, dammit.

The Justice Department is accusing Standard & Poors of defrauding investors with optimistic ratings of mortgage backed securities and derivatives prior to the financial crisis. While investors are entitled to answers about those conflicts, compensation and reforms, Attorney General Holder and President Obama, by singling out S&P, instead of other bond raters, appear to be engaging in political vengeance and put freedom of speech at risk. In 2011, S&P, Moody’s and Fitch were accused by a Senate Committee of giving overly rosy ratings on mortgage backed securities in the years

President Obama’s plan to install his counterterrorism adviser as director of the CIA has opened the administration to new scrutiny over the targeted-killing policies it has fought to keep hidden from the public, including the existence of a previously secret drone base in Saudi Arabia. The administration’s refusal to provide details about one of the most controversial aspects of its drone campaign — strikes on U.S. citizens abroad — has emerged as a potential source of opposition to CIA nominee John O. Brennan, who faces a Senate confirmation hearing scheduled for Thursday.

On Monday night, NBC News’s Michael Isikoff published a Justice Department memo justifying the “targeted killings” — without due process — of U.S. citizens who are leaders in al-Qaeda or “associated forces” but are “outside the area of hostile activities,” such as Afghanistan. The document is based on a still-classified memo on targeted killings of U.S. citizens prepared by the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel. The summary memo is a chilling document, full of twisted definitions, gaping loopholes and hints that the White House still isn’t sharing its full justification for killing citizens

Crane based that statement on the way government policies handcuff the ICE

Murders, aggravated assaults, and robberies involving guns have risen dramatically in Massachusetts since the state passed a comprehensive package of gun laws in 1998, the Boston Globe reports. The escalating nationwide gun control debate has posed a variety of reasons for increased crime in stricter states and cities: On the one hand, gun rights groups argue that restricting law-abiding citizens from arming themselves give criminals an advantage. On the other, gun-control advocates argue that strict laws in one state mean nothing if its adjoining state is lax on guns.

A newly revealed government memo makes clear just how broad the legal justification is for the targeted killings — which are the Obama administration’s signature counter-terrorism program. The memo has rekindled concern on Capitol Hill about the program, with many Democrats questioning

And he focused much of his address on families, referencing words such as family 27 times, parents 25 times, children 20 times and kids 11 times. Other policy items Cantor discussed include granting more visas to highly skilled workers; creating a breakdown of college cost for students and parents;

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated Tuesday that President Obama´s signature healthcare law will cost about $1.3 trillion over the next 10 years. The figure represents a slight increase since August, when the nonpartisan budget office estimated that the law would cost about $1.17 trillion before 2022. Tuesday´s total incorporated 2023, and budget analysts wrote that last August´s estimate "remains essentially unchanged." The CBO has concluded that healthcare reform, in spite of its price tag, will ultimately reduce the deficit because of revenue-raisers within the bill.

At a Capitol Hill press conference, a reporter asked Boehner, “Do you personally believe there should be a path to citizenship like [Senator Marco] Rubio (R-Fl.) described in his bill?” Boehner responded, “I think this is very difficult part of any of these bills. And I’m going to just encourage members on both sides of the Capitol and both parties to continue to try to come to some resolution of that issue.”

It’s no accident that the fight over multibillion-dollar cuts to every government agency sounds a lot like cuts hitting one agency — the Pentagon. The reason: It hasn’t been a fair fight. Top officials at three domestic agencies say they were instructed by the White House not to talk about the looming sequester cuts unless their talking points were first cleared by the Office of Management and Budget. The direction from the White House so infuriated Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski that she’s planning a hearing next Thursday to give domestic agencies a chance to make their case
