Washington Post, by Scott Wilson    Original Article

President Obama will travel to Israel next month, the White House confirmed Tuesday. According to Israeli media Obama is scheduled to arrive March 20. White House officials would not confirm the date. But Tommy Vietor, spokesman for the National Security Council, said Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed a possible visit in a phone call last month. It will be Obama’s first trip to Israel as president, and comes as Israeli and Palestinian leaders are at odds over how to restart peace negotiations that have been dormant for more than two years.

Firearms owners in suburban Cook County will face fines up to $2,000 if they don´t report to police when their guns are lost, stolen or sold under an ordinance commissioners approved today. The plan, pushed by County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, will apply to all areas of the county where a similar law is not already on the books. It will not apply within the city of Chicago, which has its own firearms statutes. The County Board approved the new rules by a voice vote with no opposition. The vote came just minutes after commissioners honored Hadiya Pendleton,

There is new reaction from the White House after the Justice Department released a memo saying the government can kill United States citizens overseas if it believes they are terror suspects and even if they’re not involved in an active plot against the U.S. A bipartisan group of senators is calling on President Obama to release all memos related to this policy. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, “[President Obama] takes his responsibility in conducting the war against Al Qaeda as authorized by Congress in a way that is fully consistent with

Charlottesville, Va., has become the first city in the United States to formally pass an anti-drone resolution. The resolution, passed Monday, "calls on the United States Congress and the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia to adopt legislation prohibiting information obtained from the domestic use of drones from being introduced into a Federal or State court," and "pledges to abstain from similar uses with city-owned, leased, or borrowed drones." The resolution passed by a 3-2 vote and was brought to the city council by activist David Swanson and the Rutherford Institute, a progressive civil liberties group based

The federal health care law could nearly triple premiums for some young and healthy men, according to a forthcoming survey of insurers that singles out a group that might become a major public opinion battleground in the Obamacare wars. The survey, fielded by the conservative American Action Forum and made available to POLITICO, found that if the law’s insurance rules were in force, the premium for a relatively bare-bones policy for a 27-year-old male nonsmoker on the individual market would be nearly 190 percent higher. That isn’t the sticker price many of these individuals would pay, thanks

The allegations regarding Sen. Bob Menendez and his ties to a West Palm Beach eye doctor named Salomen Melgen are piling up.In an attempt to defuse those allegations, the New Jersey Democrat is meeting them head on, huddling with reporters Monday to explain why he took so long to reimburse Melgen for two flights on the doctor’s plane in 2010 and to outright dismiss some of the more salacious reports. (That’s a marked change from his silence last week in the face of the allegations.)

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday challenged President Barack Obama´s central goal for immigration reform that would put 11 million undocumented residents on a path to citizenship, adding fresh doubts on whether legislation can be passed this year. During a kick-off hearing, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte explored a possible "middle ground" between the current U.S. policy of deporting those who have come to the United States illegally and of placing them on a path to citizenship, as Obama has demanded. The hearing was the panel´s first since last November´s elections when Hispanic-Americans

Paul Ryan feels pinched by competing paths to power. His friends tell us the most obvious route — a run for the White House in 2016 — holds less appeal to him with each passing day. “He has no interest in the sheer grind of campaigning,” said a conservative who recently spent time with Ryan. “It’s hard to see him having ‘what it takes.’” Instead, Ryan seems increasingly intrigued with the prospect of amassing more power within Congress, using his juice in the House leadership to promote his trademark Medicare plan and engineer spending cuts. Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the visit to Israel by phone in late January, when Obama congratulated Netanyahu on his success in Israel´s recent election. The White House has not released the date of Obama´s trip or details about Obama´s itinerary, but Israel´s Channel 10 reported that a visit had been scheduled for March 20. WASHINGTON—House Republicans will pursue legislation aimed at overhauling immigration and federal education policy, streamlining student-aid funding and making it easier for highly educated foreigners trained at U.S. colleges to stay in the country, Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Tuesday. The Virginia Republican, in a lunchtime speech to the conservative American Enterprise Institute, urged fellow Republican lawmakers to embrace policies aimed at helping American families rather than focusing solely on the nation´s fiscal challenges. Mr. Cantor talked about inner-city education, the flat line in median income in recent years and the need for better use of medical research dollars,

As indecent as it seems to find humor in the world’s tyrannies, it’s hard not to, especially when it comes to Venezuela and Iran. On January 21, Tahmasb Mazaheri, the former governor of Iran’s Central Bank, was arrested by German police at Dusseldorf Airport after he was found carrying a check worth 300 million Venezuelan Bolivars–the equivalent of $70 million–in his hand luggage. Mazaheri, who flew into the German city from Turkey, is suspected of involvement in money laundering. His own explanation is that the check “was designed to finance the Venezuelan government’s construction of 10,000 homes.”

The Obama administration is proposing to reform existing healthcare regulations and purge unnecessary ones, a move that it says would save $3.4 billion over five years. The Department of Health and Human Services has rolled out suggestions for changes at healthcare facilities that would eliminate red tape in the workplace. Specifically, the proposals would make it so that hospital workers and technicians can perform "tasks they are trained to do, without requiring the supervision or approval of a physician or other practitioner," according to the department. “We are committed to cutting the red tape for health care facilities,”

Carney began by clarifying that the memo in question was an “unclassified document” prepared for members of Congress. “The president takes his responsibilities very seriously,” Carney said. “And first and foremost that’s his responsibility to protect the United States.” He continued by saying that the president is dedicated to

Critics of President Barack Obama’s recess appointments are calling on Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan to recuse herself from a potential Supreme Court hearing on the matter. The Chamber of Commerce raised the prospect of recusal, citing then-solicitor general Kagan’s defense of President Obama’s recess appointments in a previous case regarding the composition of the National Labor Relations Board. The Supreme Court invalidated more than 600 NLRB decisions in the June 2010 case New Process Steel v. NLRB because the board had been issuing decisions with only two members.

He pointed to Iran and Syria but did not mention the Palestinians.

Leading gun rights groups put New York State on notice for violating the U.S. and New York State Constitutions for passage and enforcement of the NYS SAFE Act 2013. “On January 29, we served a Notice of Claim on the Attorney General of the State of New York,” said Brian Stapelton, partner at Goldberg Segalla LLP, an Albany law firm. “This is the jurisdictional prerequisite for filing a lawsuit against a municipal body.” The state has 90 days to respond, he said. “Thereafter, we will challenge the unconstitutional SAFE Act as quickly and aggressively as procedures permit.”

Socialism: Whether it was an accident or sabotage, the deadly explosion at Mexico´s state-owned oil firm wasn´t an unusual event. The one thing Thursday´s incident at the Pemex tower should be is a spur to privatize. Despite a much-publicized war against cartels, the real Mexico story is one of moderately good economic growth with zero net illegal emigration and a public sector financed by a budget showing a $1 billion annual surplus. But then there´s Pemex, the supposed symbol of national sovereignty, which in reality is nothing but a millstone around Mexico´s neck holding the country back from far greater gains.

The complaint stems from an incident which occurred Jan. 17, when a woman came in with her mother to test wedding cakes.

Or, in other words: Just give in already to the power of the all-knowing and all-powerful bureaucracy. Trust us. Last June, the Supreme Court ruled that ObamaCare’s Medicaid mandate (requiring that states expand their programs and provide specified health care to all citizens whose income falls below a certain threshold, or else face losing all prior federal funding) was an unconstitutional “gun to the head” for states’ administrations and budgets, and confirmed their right to opt out without penalty — but that doesn’t mean the Obama administration isn’t applying every

Conservatives often point out that laws, no matter how benign they may appear, have unintended consequences. They can reverberate in ways that not many people foresaw and nobody wanted: Raising the minimum wage can increase unemployment; prohibition can create black markets. The efforts in many cities to discourage the use of plastic bags demonstrate that such unintended consequences can be, among other things, kind of gross. San Francisco has been discouraging plastic bags since 2007, saying that it takes too much oil to make them and that used bags pollute waterways and kill marine animals. In 2012, it strengthened its law.

This afternoon, Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a statement to express his opinion on Morgan’s visit. “Governor Perry and all Texas law-abiding gun owners hope that Piers Morgan enjoyed Texas,” Perry said in a statement posted to his Facebook page.
