Just seven weeks after a massacre at an American elementary school, the White House released a photo of the president firing a gun. Strangely, no one seems to think this is in atrocious taste. We imagine the reaction would be quite different if it were, say, George W. Bush. But a lot of people, including this columnist, doubt that the photo depicts what it purports to show. The White House distributed the pic in response to widespread skepticism of President Obama´s assertion, in an interview with a liberal editor and a former campaign coordinator, that "up at Camp David,

RUSH: Not long ago, ladies and gentlemen, there were a rash of deaths within the political ranks of the Democrat Party. And for every one of them the Clintons showed up. Bill and Hillary showed up at every one of these famous Democrat funerals and made the whole funeral about them. And we produced a little bit called The Funeral Crashers. You know, that reminds me, it was the Coretta Scott King funeral, and Bill Clinton showed up. He was one of the eulogists, and it took him 45 or 50 minutes

Any fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder´s beloved "Little House" books knows how the author´s sister Mary went blind: scarlet fever. But turns out that probably wasn´t the cause, medical experts say, upending one of the more dramatic elements in the classic stories. An analysis of historical documents, biographical records and other material suggests another disease that causes swelling in the brain and upper spinal cord was the most likely culprit. It was known as "brain fever" in the late 1800s, the setting for the mostly true stories about Wilder´s pioneer family. Scarlet fever was rampant and feared at the time

It wasn’t flashy or filled with special effects, but Dodge Ram’s Super Bowl commercial that featured the late radio broadcaster Paul Harvey’s tribute to U.S. farmers might have won the hearts and minds of viewers Sunday night. The two-minute spot featured a series of stark photos of farmers at work. Along with a montage of still images, Harvey’s distinctive voice delivers the narration: his “So God Made a Farmer” speech, which he gave in 1978 at the National Future Farmers of America Convention. He died in 2009 at age 90. Ram commissioned 10 noted photographers, including National Geographic icon

Curry lovers are likely to see a hefty hike in the price of their favourite meal following a dramatic drop in the production of basmati rice. Rising demand from other countries has also helped push the cost up by more than 80 percent in the past year. Pulsa basmati, a higher yielding variety mostly used in supermarket own-label products, has also shot up by around 65 percent. According to the Rice Association, prices have soared largely because the 2012 Indian harvest was up to 40 percent smaller than in 2011. The Indian government has also introduced a minimum support price

Commuters on Washington, D.C.’s Metro system may finally have something to look forward to on their commutes other than broken escalators and single-tracking. By 2014, Metro plans on introducing state-of-the-art new rail cars that include LCD screens and ergonomic designs. While these new features may sound exciting, the cost is not. At over $2 million per car, Metro’s order comes to around $886 million. Why the big bucks? In part it is because of “buy American” clauses that Metro activated when it tapped into a $300 million federal matching grant for mass transit.

“Why did you lead us out of Egypt?” the Labor Department union boss, who recalls happier times under President George W. Bush, must wonder when he looks at a picture of President Obama. The local 12 chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is so frustrated with the political appointees at the top of the Labor Department that they are now reduced to pining for the Bush years. “At our meeting today, of about fifty members, there was general consternation about the fact that Seth Harris is Acting Secretary of Labor

The White House on Monday missed the Feb. 4 deadline for filing its fiscal 2014 budget, blaming the uncertainty caused by “fiscal cliff” negotiations for the failure. “[B]ecause these issues were not resolved until the American Taxpayer Relief Act was enacted on January 2, 2013, the Administration was forced to delay some of its FY 2014 Budget preparations, which will in turn delay the Budget’s submission to Congress,” wrote Jeffrey Zients, Office of Management and Budget Deputy Director, in a letter to House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan on January 11.

After a meeting today in Paris with the French president, Francois Hollande, Vice President Joe Biden praised "the incredible competence and capability" of the French military. He was specifically referring to the recent military action taken by the French in Mali. "And as the [French] President indicated, we discussed an array of issues starting and including Mali and North Africa more broadly. And let me say again on behalf of the President, the people of the United States, we applaud your decisiveness and I might add the incredible competence and capability of your French military forces," said Biden.

In coming days the Boy Scouts of America will decide whether to violate – eliminate, really – its own mission statement, oath and law by changing its policy to allow, within its ranks, Scouts and Scoutmasters who are open practitioners of the homosexual lifestyle. Sadly, to do so would destroy BSA’s credibility as a “morally straight” organization. Such foolhardy capitulation to extremist pressure groups would spell the demise of Scouting as we’ve known it. The Prince of the Earth seeks to corrupt and ultimately destroy all that is righteous, honorable and good.

According to Fox (and others) Mitt Romney´s son, Tagg “is reportedly considering a run for the open U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts.” Leading one to ask ... why? Mr. Romney hasn´t held public office. His experience in politics, so far, amounts to advising his father in his two unsuccessful Presidential campaigns. He isn´t identified with any particular school of thought or body of ideas when it comes to public policy. Hasn´t written any books suggesting that he has thought through any of the issues of the day. So if he were to run,

Joseph Berger´s long tribute to the late, legendary former New York City mayor Ed Koch made the front of the New York Times Sunday Metro section -- "So, How´d He Do?" But Berger stained Koch´s memory by citing the irresponsible, inflammatory voices of Rev. Calvin Butts and Al Sharpton and bizarrely suggesting Koch´s rhetoric played a part in racist assaults against blacks: "Despite his condemnation of the mob beatings, it was hard to tamp down a sense among blacks that his public rhetoric -- in the 1988 presidential campaign, for example, he said Jews would be ´crazy´

Chris Huhne´s resignation as the member of Parliament for Eastleigh will mean a difficult by-election for the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. Huhne won in 2010 with a majority of just 3,864, making Eastleigh one of Grant Shapps´s target seats. This is particularly awkward for David Cameron. In order to reassure his sceptical backbenchers, who think he´s made far too many concessions to Nick Clegg as it is, he´ll have to go all out to win, with frequent trips to the constituency. Not only will that mean an unseemly punch up between the Coalition parties

Geraldo Rivera recently announced on his radio show that he was considering a run as a Republican for the Senate from the state of New Jersey. But as is Geraldo´s wont, he´s already criticizing the very party whose blessing he seeks. On Jan. 31, Rivera told his radio audience that he is "truly contemplating" a run for Senate and he wants to represent the Republican Party. But only a day later, on Fox News´ "Studio B With Shepard Smith," he was heard criticizing the GOP as a "party of scolds" and saying

Who is running the Justice Department? It certainly appears evident, as President Obama enters his second term, that leftist radicals have a seat at the table inside Justice and are making both policy and personnel decisions. As Judicial Watch has previously disclosed, the Obama Department of Justice (DOJ) has colluded with a number of leftist special interest groups. For example, the DOJ worked closely with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) regarding the dismissal of the voter intimidation lawsuit filed against the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense.

One of the women alleged to be a prostitute connected to New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez has denied the claim, which was first put forward by a mysterious e-mailer. Yaneisi Fernandez told Spanish-language television station Univision she had never seen Menendez before. “I’ve never participated in those activities, don’t know those people or that man,” Fernandez, 21, told Univision. Politico obtained a translation of the report. The Super Bowl ad sidelined by CBS for taking shots at soda giants Pepsi and Coke can claim a victory online. The 46-second spot for SodaStream — a machine that lets people make their own bubbly beverages at home — has been viewed more than 2.5 million times since Wednesday. The buzz started after ad man Alex Bogusky, who’s behind the company’s campaign, questioned CBS for yanking the commercial from its lineup. Israel-based SodaStream had purchased air time during the Super Bowl’s fourth quarter, according to Ad Age. “Soda Stream has the right to show competitors,” Bogusky tweeted.

Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is telling is correct, then the story the State Department Accountability Review Board (ARB) and the Central Intelligence Agency have told is not. If the story the State Department and the CIA have told is correct, than Gen. The 41 conservative organizations, in a full-page ad in Monday´s USA Today, said it would be a "grave mistake" for BSA to change their longstanding policy against having openly homosexual Scout leaders or Scouts. Sen. Ron Wyden has spent two years demanding that the Obama administration share its legal opinions justifying the targeted assassinations of suspected American terrorists abroad. After all, as a member of the Intelligence Committee, the Oregon Democrat is entitled (and cleared) to know. How can his panel provide oversight if officials won’t say what legal authority they have, let alone in which countries it applies? The White House has spent those two years stonewalling. “The administration’s position is basically, ‘Trust us,’” Wyden tells National Journal. “Nowhere in the charge to the committee does oversight get defined as trusting the

FORT WORTH, Texas — Feminist icon Gloria Steinem said Gov. Rick Perry has without a doubt created a lasting legacy in Texas. When the state´s longest-serving governor and former GOP presidential candidate signed off on plans to shrink funding for family planning -- and revamped the women´s healthcare program, excluding Planned Parenthood from participating -- his place in history became clear, she said. "He personally will go down in history as an authoritarian -- a dictatorial, unacceptable American," Steinem, 78, told the Star-Telegram on Friday before speaking to a crowd of more than 800
