There are those who will dismiss Fox News personality Geraldo Rivera’s announcement that he is considering running for the U.S. Senate in New Jersey in 2014 as a Republican as just one more publicity stunt in a career replete with them. Rivera’s public record is mixed, as it has combined serious advocacy on a number of issues with the sort of foolish excess that has given a bad name to tabloid journalism. If people think of him more as a celebrity than a journalist, it is his own fault and not something that he has seemed to mind very much.

Monday marked the deadline set in law for President Obama to submit a budget, but he missed it — making this the fourth time in his five years in office that he´s failed to submit the blueprint on time. This year, Mr. Obama blamed the late passage of his tax increase deal early last month. "Because these issues were not resolved until the American Taxpayer Relief Act was enacted on Jan. 2, 2013, the administration was forced to delay some of its FY 2014 budget preparations, which will in turn delay the budget´s submission to Congress,"

The NRA´s Wayne LaPierre said on Fox News Sunday that "the public should not trust the White House to pursue limited changes to gun-control laws," as The Hill reports. Reminding viewers for comparison that ObamaCare "wasn´t a tax until they needed it to be a tax," LaPierre could also have recalled Obama´s keep-your-doctor, keep-your-plan, reduce-the-cost, reduce-the-deficit deceptions. Or LaPierre could have referred to Obama´s telling the Brady group he was working on gun control "under the radar." Or he could

Even for controversial nominees, Senate confirmation hearings are usually a time to shine in the center of the media spotlight. In his confirmation hearing last week, Chuck Hagel didn’t look like a star under a spotlight: Hagel looked like a deer in the headlights. Former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel went through a whole day of questioning in his quest to be the next Secretary of Defense by delivering fumbling, nearly incoherent remarks, flip-flopping on his long record of opposition to Israel and toughness against terrorists (including Iran) faster than a freshly-caught fish.

MADRID—When Clara Colome´s small business failed in Spain´s grinding recession, she picked up the pieces with a little help from her friends, "Pandemonium" and "Hell on Wheels." Those are the nicknames of her teammates on the Black Thunders Derby Dames, a local roller derby team that is part of a global boom in the full-contact skating sport. Ms. Colome, who skates as "Heidi Maiden," says that roller derby lifted her out of the doldrums by giving her renewed self-confidence as well as a sense of camaraderie. But what Ms. Colome really needed in a recent exhibition bout against the camouflage-wearing

One of President Obama’s greatest political strengths is his ability to convince people that he understands them not in the abstract, but through shared experiences. You have to struggle to get by? Boy, does he know what that’s like. You’ve had bad experiences with your health insurer? He had to sue his mother’s insurer over improperly denied coverage. You’re a gun enthusiast? Hey, he goes shooting all the time! Obama used such biography-based narratives to great effect in 2008 and 2012. Sometimes they are true, or at least based in truth.

Emil Conti’s blood pressure was under control thanks to his daily use of the generic drug Verapamil, but it didn’t get any help in January, when he saw his monthly co-payment for the drug rise from $8 to $105. Conti, 83, of Lakewood, was taken aback. He thought he had done the things he needed to keep the cost low. Instead, he was going to have to reach deeper to pay for prescription drugs.

Washington--President Obama said in a televised interview on Sunday that he could foresee a budget deal in Congress that did not include further increases in tax rates but instead focused on eliminating loopholes and deductions. Mr. Obama has generally insisted that all revenue options, including higher rates, should be considered to slow the rise of federal budget deficits. But in the interview with Scott Pelley of CBS News, he said, “I don’t think the issue right now is raising rates.”

Discussing gun control, CNN´s Wolf Blitzer on Friday told a Utah sheriff that if Barack Obama issues an executive order, that order is the law and the sheriff must obey. However, jurisprudence on this topic reveals exactly the opposite. As the head of the executive branch of the federal government, a president can issue executive orders only to employees of the federal government—and only regarding implementing federal laws or programs. A governor can likewise issue executive orders to employees of his state government regarding the laws or programs of that state. Source corrected by Staff.

Timbuktu, Mali--When the moment of danger came, Ali Imam Ben Essayouti knew just what to do. The delicate, unbound parchment manuscripts in the 14th-century mosque he leads had already survived hundreds of years in the storied city of Timbuktu. He was not about to allow its latest invaders, Tuareg nationalist rebels and Islamic extremists from across the region, to destroy them now. So he gingerly bundled the 8,000 volumes in sackcloth, carefully stacked them in crates, then quietly moved them to a bunker in an undisclosed location. “These manuscripts, they are not just for us in Timbuktu,”

There are new calls for President Obama to intervene in Chicago where a teen who performed at the 2013 inauguration was fatally shot. Reverend Jesse Jackson held a march yesterday in honor of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton. She was gunned down by gang members who fired into crowd as she talked in a park with friends. Jackson spoke to Eric Shawn on America’s News HQ about gun violence. He said there needs to be an urban policy intervention. “We’re looking at a real crisis of the pains of poverty. […] You can’t police poverty.”

My friends at Campus Reform are on top of it, as usual. They always expose the thin-skinned idiocy of campus liberals and give me lots of column fodder in the process. (Snip) Campus Reform is reporting that Chick-fil-A, the popular fast food restaurant chain, has now been dubbed a "symbol of hate," by a professor at Eastern Illinois University (EIU). Lisa Moyer, who teaches in the Family Studies Department at EIU, apparently made the comment with a straight face, although some have suggested that the term "straight face" reinforces heterosexist oppression.

A surgery center charged teacher Lynne Nielsen $87,500 for a routine 20-minute knee operation that normally costs about $3,000. Despite the huge markup, her employer and its insurer, Blue Shield of California, paid virtually all of the bill from Advanced Surgical Partners in Costa Mesa, Calif. Blue Shield mailed the $84,800 check to the high school Spanish teacher in December and told her to sign it over to the surgery center. Nielsen said she was outraged and refused to send the check. Instead, she asked the California attorney general´s office to investigate the matter. "This is insane," she said. Source corrected by Staff.

Kyle, the most celebrated sniper in the armed forces after his book American Sniper was released, was shot and killed at a gun range. He was apparently shot in the back. Jeffery started the Twitter war with this tweet: So if a Navy SEAL and reputed best sniper in the world AT A GUN RANGE can´t take down a sick guy on a rampage...

My middle-child brother David is a great guy and a thinker. He has worked full-time in a factory for years, but he also coached little league football for several years, growing to become commissioner of the County Youth Football League. David has noticed America´s cultural decline reflected in the attitudes of kids in his football programs -- no fear or respect for authority. David is non-political -- does not listen to talk radio or watch Fox News. Thus, he does not connect the cultural decline to politics.

In an announcement that rewrote history, archaeologists confirmed that "beyond reasonable doubt" that the skeleton was found in the resting place of the Plantagenet king. They said that long-awaited DNA results on the bones proved beyond doubt that they belonged to the king, more than 500 years after he was killed in battle. Speaking before more than 140 journalists from all over the world, the University of Leicester team described their find as "truly astonishing".[Snip] They said that the skeleton was the king as far as all scientific tests could prove. Forget the Ravens and the 49ers. For animal lovers who rather watch puppies bounce around than watch burly men chase and tackle each other as they run for the end zone, Sunday was all about Puppy Bowl XI. Several hours before the showdown between Baltimore and San Francisco that ended with Baltimore’s victory, there was a much smaller winner on Animal Planet. This year´s Puppy Bowl Bissell ‘Most Valuable Puppy’ prize went to Marta, a Schnauzer/Beagle mix from the adoption organization AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport. Marta, a very small pooch, outperformed dogs twice her size to take the winning

FDNY Lt Martin Fullam contracted polymyositis in 2005, and had also suffered from pulmonary fibrosis, which left him breathless and exhausted after the simplest of tasks. The late firefighter, 56, was one of the men carrying fatally wounded FDNY Chaplain Mychal Judge through the still-smoking rubble on 9/11. The image of Lt Fullam and four others carrying the chaplain has remained one of the most poignant and haunting pictures from that horrific day. Hundreds of members of New York’s bravest gathered Saturday afternoon on Staten Island to say farewell to Lt Fullam, who fought tirelessly for first responders

The Obama administration has found the policy equivalent of alchemy. Employees of religious organizations will receive contraception coverage. And neither the individuals nor the groups will have to pay for it. It’s magic. Otherwise known as making the insurer pay. On Friday the Department of Health and Human Services announced its new rule mandating coverage of contraception. Responding to the furor that the proposal first raised, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius proclaimed that the draft regulation would guarantee free coverage “while respecting religious concerns.”

We awoke Friday to the announcement that NBC News president Steve Capus was “resigning” (that is, fired), and the only wonder is that he wasn’t fired Thursday evening after the national broadcast. I made the mistake of taking in NBC’s national news broadcast Thursday evening, and it fell below even the usual low standards for network news bias and reportorial incompetence. NBC essentially handed off their lead story to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. You can watch the whole broadcast at this link if you are a glutton for punishment. Brian Williams leads

Honoring the gravity of last week’s events, this episode of “Downton” picks up pretty much where we left off, with Sybil’s sad, sad, sad death casting a pall over everything and everyone. The residents of Downton are reeling, wearing black, and in desperate need of cheering up, none more so than Cora. Cora, bereft and at an understandable loss to explain how her beautiful, healthy 24-year-old daughter up and died, has channeled much of her grief into anger at her husband. There was a chance Sybil could be saved, but Robert believed Sir Tapsell because “He’s knighted and fashionable”

There are many problems with Kathryn Bigelow´s new movie Zero Dark Thirty. The torture scenes have sparked a row about the role of "enhanced interrogation" in finding bin Laden, while Pakistan´s blogosphere is awash with gripes about the unconvincing portrait it paints of the country. Perhaps the most dangerous error, however, is a brief scene showing how a doctor was used by the CIA in an (unsuccessful) attempt to extract blood--and thus DNA--from children living in the mysterious house in Abbottabad. Shakil Afridi remains in prison for his work and the episode continues to cast a dark, dark shadow over
