Britain is giving EU immigrants £1million a week in handouts for children who live abroad. The payments include child benefit – which was stripped from more than one million British families last month. The bill is likely to rise still further when Romanians and Bulgarians get free access to the UK jobs market on January 1. Critics said it was ‘absurd’ to carry on sending money to countries such as Poland when families were losing out at home. Overall, there are 24,082 child benefit awards currently being made, in respect of 40,171 children, according to a study

Q: President Clinton said that one of his greatest regrets was not doing more to stop genocide in Rwanda. We have a situation in Syria where more than 60,000 Syrians have been killed. [U.N. envoy Lakhdar] Brahimi has been making no headway diplomatically. The conflict is beginning to spread regionally with Iran’s intervention with its Quds Forces, its arms supplies, Hezbollah’s participation and now the Israeli strike on the convoy in Syria. Looking back, can you say that the United States has done everything it could have to stem the killing in Syria? And when you look back on this episode in the

The U.S. is not the only nation experiencing a renaissance in oil production. Sidelined for two decades by war, sanctions and political instability, Iraq passed a critical milestone last year by producing 3 million barrels a day of crude oil for the first time since 1990, before the Persian Gulf War, reaching 3.4 million barrels a day by December. Given its access to vast reserves at low costs, Baghdad is poised to play a pivotal role in determining whether the world’s growing thirst for oil drives up fuel prices to debilitating levels in coming years.

Security in Benghazi, the eastern Libyan city where four Americans were killed Sept. 11 in a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate, has decayed to the point where Westerners are fleeing, assassinations and kidnappings are rife and residents worry that U.S. drone strikes on jihadist targets are imminent. “The situation has obviously deteriorated. It is a systematic deterioration,” said longtime Benghazi resident Jalal Elgallal, who was spokesman of the now-defunct National Transitional Council. Mr. Elgallal recently escaped harm from a nearby bomb blast as he waited in his car at a traffic light.

Washington - The White House’s attempt to portray President Obama as a gun user may have had unintended consequences today, as a newly released photo of Mr. Obama firing a rifle at Camp David set off a panic of gun buying across the US. Right-wing opponents of Mr. Obama were behind the frenzied gun sales, saying that they were terrified by the image of an armed and shooting President. “I don’t want to sound paranoid or anything, but now everything Obama has been doing makes sense,”(Snip) “He wants to take away all our guns and then he’s going to come shoot us.”

Washington - Leon Panetta, who as CIA director oversaw the U.S. operation that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, said the job could have been done without resorting to controversial interrogation methods that some have said constitute torture.(Snip) "I think we could have gotten Bin Laden without that," Panetta added in response to a question about what the interviewer called enhanced interrogation or torture. Panetta did not elaborate on how this might have been done, but said most of the intelligence used to find bin Laden had been stitched together without resort to enhanced interrogation.

Washington - Last summer, as the fighting in Syria raged and questions about the United States’ inaction grew, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton conferred privately with David H. Petraeus, the director of the C.I.A. The two officials were joining forces on a plan to arm the Syrian resistance. (Snip) “Secretary Clinton has dramatically changed the face of U.S. foreign policy globally for the good,” said Richard L. Armitage, deputy secretary of state during the George W. With Super Bowl 2013’s kickoff two hours away, and San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens fans free to flow into the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the government’s restrictions on air traffic have gone into effect. That means that the small airplanes towing advertising banners over the downtown area in recent days are supposed to be grounded effective 3:30 p.m. But they appeared to disappear from the skies an hour earlier. As part of the security plan set up for the game, no unauthorized air traffic is allowed within a 10-mile radius of the Superdome, up to 18,000 feet, until 11:59 p.m.,

President Barack Obama on Sunday said Scouting should be open to gay members. Details to come. The Scouts´ national leadership is mulling scrapping the mandatory exclusion of gay members. Instead, the group could allow different religious and civic groups that sponsor Scout units to decide for themselves how to address the issue — either maintaining the exclusion or opening up their membership. Even though the Irving-based Boy Scouts reaffirmed the no-gays policy just seven months ago, the proposal is expected to be discussed, and possibly voted on, at the meeting of the Scouts´ national executive board,

Washington - The Israeli attack last week on a Syrian convoy of antiaircraft weapons appears to have also hit the country’s main research center for work on biological and chemical weapons, according to American officials who are sorting through intelligence reports. While the main target of the attack on Wednesday appears to have been SA-17 missiles and their launchers — which the Israelis feared were about to be moved to Hezbollah forces in Lebanon — video shown on Syrian television appears to back up assertions that the research center north of Damascus was also damaged.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama said on Sunday more tax revenue would be needed in the coming years to reduce the U.S. deficit but raising tax rates was not a key issue. "I don´t think the issue right now is raising rates," Obama said in an interview on CBS. "There is no doubt we need additional revenue, coupled with smart spending reductions in order to bring down our deficit. And we can do it in a gradual way so that it doesn´t have a huge impact," he said. At the beginning of the year Obama pushed through legislation

Israel intends to declare a buffer zone inside the Syrian border to prevent terrorists from getting too close to its territory when the embattled Damascus regime topples, security sources quoted by the AFP news agency said on Sunday. "There´s a plan in the military´s northern command for the ´day after´ according to which, when Bashar Assad is no longer president of Syria, there´s a fear that terror elements will try to approach the fence," the sources told AFP. "So they want to create some sort of buffer zone within Syrian territory, and let everyone know.

Korean firms and even Korean culture are going to be everywhere this Sunday night as the San Francisco 49ers take on the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. Samsung will have an ad for mobile devices featuring Hollywood stars Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd. Kia will school us on where babies come from and show us a kick-ass female robot. She will probably be very sexy. Hyundai will air three different ads,

Thursday’s Senate confirmation hearing for Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel was an omnidirectionally embarrassing debacle for everyone involved. First there were the Senate Republicans who seethed with such theatrical contempt for Hagel and his ideas you would have thought the president had nominated Noam Chomsky for the post (who, incidentally wouldn’t be my first choice to head the Pentagon but who I’d take over Donald Rumsfeld in a heartbeat). Republican senator after Republican senator threw questions at Hagel that even by the debased standards of a nominating hearing

Embattled President Bashar al-Assad accused Israel on Sunday of trying to destabilize Syria following reported attacks on a weapons convoy and a military research base outside Damascus last week. Assad vowed that his regime will retaliate as his allies rushed to denounce the strike which threatened to take the conflict beyond Syria’s borders. Syria’s state news agency SANA said Assad made the remarks in a meeting with Saeed Jalili, Iran’s national security council secretary, at a meeting in the Syrian capital. It was Assad’s first reported response to Wednesday’s attack.

NEW ORLEANS - The Super Bowl closes a tumultuous year for the NFL. Suicides by former NFL players. Thousands of others filing concussion lawsuits. New studies linking football to brain disease. Still no testing for human growth hormone. The specter of other purported performance-enhancing products — deer-antler spray, anyone? — being peddled to players. A pay-for-pain bounty scandal. A lockout of officials resolved only after a ludicrous game-ending call. Zero minority hires for 15 coach or general manager openings. And yet the league is as popular as ever. Advertisers paid nearly $4 million per 30-second

The battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party has begun. On one side is the Tea Party. On the other side stand Karl Rove and his establishment team, posing as tacticians while quietly undermining conservatism. Yesterday, the New York Times reported that the “biggest donors in the Republican Party” have joined forces with Karl Rove and Steven J. Law, president of American Crossroads, to create the Conservative Victory Project. The Times reports that this new group will dedicate itself to “recruit seasoned candidates and protect Senate incumbents from challenges by far-right conservatives and Tea Party enthusiasts ..

Like Thomas-John on “Girls,” the Super Bowl is a unicorn, that rarest of creatures. It’s the one remaining television event that attracts pretty much every household, a fact most other networks tacitly acknowledge by airing repeats or, in the case of HBO, making its popular Sunday night shows available early for on-demand viewing. (That includes the episode of “Girls” in which Thomas-John calls himself a unicorn.) But you know those Brits — they just don’t understand the popularity of American football. So PBS is standing its ground and airing the new installment of British import “Downton Abbey”

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said that some of the information that was used to locate and kill Osama bin Laden was attained using torture. The admission comes after months of speculation about the role that waterboarding plays in CIA interrogations following its graphic depiction in the Oscar-nominated film Zero Dark Thirty. ´In order to put the puzzle of intelligence together that led us to Bin Laden, there were a lot of pieces out there that were a part of that puzzle. Yes, some of it came from some of the tactics that were used at that time, interrogation tactics

President Obama will give a live interview to CBS before it airs the Super Bowl on Sunday. At 4:30 pm, Obama will field questions from CBS´s Scott Pelley, continuing a long-standing tradition of providing interviews to the network airing the NFL championship, usually the most-watched television event of the year. Last year, Obama spoke with Matt Lauer before NBC broadcast the big game. Pelley told The New Orleans Times-Picayune that he will talk pigskin with the president, but also has a range of "serious questions" to tackle.

Brownells is an economic developer’s dream: a fast-growing, homegrown Iowa business that treats workers like the neighbors they are, eagerly donates to a passing community hat, and grooms leaders who sit on city boards and holler from soccer game benches. The Montezuma-based supplier of firearm accessories, ammunition and supplies also stands on the front lines of a national debate over gun control — selling controversial high-capacity ammunition magazines and parts for semi-automatics like the AR-15.
