Two House committees are investigating whether the IRS illegally implemented an important provision of Obamacare. House Ways and Means Committee chairman Dave Camp (R., Mich.) and Oversight Committee chairman Darrell Issa (R., Calif.) sent a letter on Tuesday to the acting secretary of the Treasury Department and the acting commissioner of the IRS requesting documents and interviews with specific officials. The two committees are investigating how the IRS decided to implement a specific tax credit created in the Obamacare legislation.

Darn that economy. Why won´t it behave? Doesn´t it realize that Barack Obama has more important things to do than worry about its health and well-being? That´s the tone I get from a story headline at the Associated Press, aka the Administration´s Press, about how "ECONOMIC JITTERS COMPETE WITH OBAMA AGENDA." The poor guy; he has to pay attention to something he must have thought he could keep at bay with continued but consistent tepid job and economic growth. Trouble is, yesterday´s report from the government indicated

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Shirley Chambers of Chicago had four children - three boys and a girl. Now they´re all gone. Chambers will bury her son, Ronnie Chambers, on Monday. He was the last of the single mother´s children - all victims of gun violence in Chicago over a period of 18 years. "I was in shock, truly, because I´m just knowing that Ronnie´s going to grow up and be an old man. That was in my heart," said Chambers, 54. The loss of four siblings to the same fate illustrates the depth of Chicago´s stubborn gun violence problem

Is Texas turning blue? (Don’t think so.) Is Texas turning purple? (Check back in 2014.) But if you believe the latest poll from Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm with a track record for accurate surveys, Hillary Clinton could make the Lone Star State competitive in the 2016 presidential race. According to PPP, the soon-to-be-former Secretary of State holds a 1 percentage point lead over Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (46 percent to 45 percent) in Texas, a 2 point lead over New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (45 percent to 43 percent) and a (comparatively) massive

Mexico City - A huge explosion rocked the Mexico City headquarters of state-owned oil giant Pemex, killing at least 15 people, injuring 100 more and leaving rescuers scrambling to find survivors. Smoke billowed skyward as people fled the 54-floor skyscraper with some of those hurt in the blast being carried out on stretchers and office chairs, as witnesses recalled how a huge rumble shook the floor like an earthquake. (Snip) A spokesman for the civil protection agency told AFP there was an apparent "accumulation of gas" in an electrical supply room,

Some Americans feel like they live in a police state, others are discouraged by a sense of waning opportunity or flagging optimism. Do we have national malaise? Yes. It’s called “federal government,” suggests some new research. “Overall, 53 percent of Americans think that the federal government threatens their own rights and freedoms,” says a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, which also reveals that 70 percent of Republicans feel this threat, as do 76 percent of conservative Republicans. In contrast, 38 percent

Rising tensions over whether to give illegal immigrants a chance to pursue full citizenship could ruin what President Obama and congressional leaders agree is a pivotal moment in resolving long- simmering problems in the country’s immigration system. Immigrant advocates and their Democratic allies insist that now, at long last, is their time. After various failed proposals over the past decade, they finally feel they have the leverage to accept nothing less than a path to full citizenship for the millions of people living illegally in the country.

The Post reports that the odds are increasing — perhaps to the point of near certainty — that the so-called “sequester” will take effect March 1. This would be a pity. For non-budget wonks, the sequester mandates about $1 trillion in government spending cuts over nine years, divided between defense and non-defense programs. These would be the wrong cuts, done in the wrong way. There’s a better approach. First, some background. The sequester was never intended to take effect. It was designed as a sledgehammer to force congressional leaders to negotiate deficit reductions.

New intelligence on al-Qaeda’s affiliate in North Africa indicates that the militant group is seeking to carry out attacks on other Western targets in the region after its deadly assault on a natural gas complex in Algeria, senior U.S. intelligence officials said Thursday. The push to mount follow-on strikes is seen as evidence that al-Qaeda was emboldened by the Jan. 16 raid and subsequent battle with Algerian security services that killed dozens of hostages and militants. A senior U.S. intelligence official said that new streams of information have surfaced

The new chief executive of state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, said Wednesday that the company is embarking on its most ambitious drilling program in decades and plans to operate the biggest fleet of jack-up rigs and modular rigs in the world. Emilio Lozoya, who was appointed by President Enrique Pena Nieto in November, said during a trip to Singapore shipyards that Pemex is securing a dedicated fleet of shallow-water drilling platforms to guarantee availability and competitive pricing, the company said in a statement. Mr. Lozoya said the company expects that eight to

Madrid - The Spanish navy has documented 1,580 shipwrecks in a database created in 2011 to track all the ships lost at sea based on information in the naval archives, the Defense Ministry said Thursday. The database confirmed that most of the ships lost at sea went down off the Iberian Peninsula and in the Caribbean, with many of the vessels involved in the intense maritime traffic with the Americas over the past few centuries. The project´s goal is to locate and identify the vessels whose sinkings are documented in the navy´s vast records of both Spanish ships that sank

I had thought that Lindsey Graham would be the most effective questioner of Chuck Hagel at today’s hearing, and Graham did his usual fine job of “cross-examination.” But for my money, Ted Cruz topped Graham and everyone else with questions that exposed not just Hagel’s contempt for Israel, but his contempt for the United States. You can view the tape of Cruz’s devastating round with Hagel here. First, Cruz played excerpts from a tape of Hagel’s 2009 appearance on al Jazeera, in which a caller suggested that Israel had committed war crimes. In responding to the question

MSNBC´s Chris Matthews on Thursday assailed John McCain, slamming the "boiling hatred" aimed at Chuck Hagel, Barack Obama´s Defense Secretary nominee. Matthews sneered, "Hatred, pure and simple, seeped from the mouths of John McCain and Lindsay Graham as they slashed away at war hero Hagel." (McCain is also a war hero. Graham is a veteran. Are those with military experience only allowed to speak out if they agree with Matthews?) Most ridiculously, Matthews whined, "Why can´t politics be a matter of belief and honest disagreement, not hatred?" This coming from the man who has, more than once, compared his opponents

It’s not clear if administration sources that leaked the story that Chuck Hagel had three practice sessions before a mock committee before his actual Senate confirmation hearing were trying to help or hurt the former senator. Hagel’s performance was so shaky that even some of his liberal supporters like Peter Beinart were lamenting on Twitter about his stumbling and bumbling answers to tough questions. That he flopped so badly after being rehearsed speaks volumes about how bad he was. Indeed, he had so many misstatements that it will be hard for news organizations to choose

Democrats spent the 2012 presidential campaign successfully blaming George W. Bush for the country’s sluggish economy. But a week after President Obama’s second inaugural, they are still not taking responsibility for the country’s fiscal health. The White House responded to yesterday’s disturbing news that GDP declined for the first time since 2009 in predictable fashion: they blamed the bad numbers on Republicans. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the dip was the fault of “Congressional Republicans” who have tried to restrain the government’s out-of-control spending. Even though the president got his way

In what seems like a double standard against conservatives, Facebook has not taken down a vile page depicting former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin holding a gun to her head while allowing users and "fans" to post messages on the page that wish for Palin´s death. The social networking site has banned conservatives and conservative pages for lesser "offenses." The website Pundit Press, which monitors Facebook pages that target conservatives, found a Facebook page titled, "I hate it when I wake up and Sarah Palin is still alive." The page shows "a cartoon caricature

Washington - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton issued a parting warning Thursday about Syria´s civil war, accusing Iran of playing an increasingly prominent role in directing the violence, which she said heightened the danger of a larger regional conflict that draws in Israel or other neighbors. "I´ve done what was possible to do," Clinton told reporters on the eve of her last day as secretary of state. But she painted a harrowing picture of a war that could still get worse. "The worst kind of predictions about what could happen internally and spilling over the borders of Syria

Just one week after a federal court rebuked the Environmental Protection Agency for mandating biofuel standards based on “wishful thinking,” the EPA responded by raising those standards to even more unattainable levels. The EPA called for refiners and importers to mix 14 million gallons of cellulosic biofuels (ethanol) into fuel in 2013. “EPA calculates a percentage-based standard for the following year,” the agency explained in an announcement today. “Based on the standard, each refiner and importer determines the minimum volume of renewable fuel that it must ensure is used in its transportation fuel.”

Starnes is a frequent guest on Bryan Fischer‘s AFA radio show, which should give you at least a little clue of where the Fox reporter comes from on issues of religion, homosexuality, science, etc. With blaring sirens literally signaling his appearance this morning, Starnes said: “There is a disturbing trend in the country where Muslim students

After all that ambassador talk went nowhere, the least the Obamas could do is toss Anna Wintour a nice Vogue cover and some lovely spreads of the White House. (There´s a chance that´s all Anna really wanted, anyway.) The Washingtonian reports that a team from Vogue was seen "moving cameras into the residence" early this morning for a photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz, who shot Michelle´s last cover for the March 2009 issue. Also of note: The President´s schedule is apparently open today, so he may pose in a few shots himself. The Washingtonian speculates that this cover

SAN DIEGO – Super Bowl advertising has become as much of a spectacle as the game itself. Most years the TV commercials are far more entertaining. Harris Interactive’s poll for advertising agency Hanon McKendry found 56 percent of U.S. adults who plan to watch Super Bowl XLVII tuning in as much or more for the commercials as for the game. Interest in the ads is strongest among women, with 66 percent of female viewers saying they watch as much or more for the ads, compared to 47 percent of male viewers.

Former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel was, at turns, halting, befuddled and, often, just plain bad during his confirmation hearing to be the next Secretary of Defense. And it almost certainly won’t keep him from becoming the next man to lead the Pentagon. Let’s start with what Hagel did wrong. He appeared to be taken completely aback by the aggressiveness of the questioning from many of his former Republican colleagues on long-hashed over topics like his posture toward Iran and Israel as well as his past statements regarding the surge in Iraq. This exchange with his one-time friend John McCain

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has been placed in the intensive care unit at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, his spokesman said Thursday. Koch spokesman George Arzt, who spoke to the former mayor this morning, told CNN affiliate WCBS that the mayor "was in obvious discomfort." "After I spoke to him ... his lead doctor and cardiologist decided that he should be put into the intensive care unit," Arzt said. Koch, 88, was hospitalized last September for anemia and underwent a blood transfusion at the same hospital. The lawyer-turned-public-servant was a U.S. congressman from 1968 until he ran for mayor

Arab-American groups have sharply criticized a Coca-Cola Super Bowl ad depicting an Arab walking through the desert with a camel, and one group said it would ask the beverage giant to change it before CBS airs the game on Sunday before an expected audience of more than 100 million U.S. viewers. "Why is it that Arabs are always shown as either oil-rich sheiks, terrorists, or belly dancers?" said Warren David, president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, or ADC.

Depuy, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, continued to market “metal on metal” hip implants after a leading British surgeon warned in emails to an executive of the manufacturer that patients were suffering. The company’s own data also allegedly disclosed that a relatively high proportion of the artificial hips, which are supposed to last a lifetime, were failing after two and a half years. Tests concluded that they were significantly more likely to fail than other models. Depuy continued to market the hips to British patients, hundreds of whom are now having them replaced because they are suspected of causing
