A little more than a month after the tragic mass shooting of 26 students and faculty at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., a group of 26 students from the school will perform America the Beautiful during the Super Bowl XLVII pregame show, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed to USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday. The league is flying the students and their families down to New Orleans later this week in advance of the performance, which will be broadcast live on CBS shortly before Alicia Keys performs the National Anthem.

Bill Moyers and Extractor Economics. The economy shrinks. And the Constitution is under liberal assault yet again. We’ll get to Mr. Moyers — and ex-US Senator Russ Feingold in a moment. So too the shrinking economy, as announced yesterday by the Commerce Department. But first: What exactly is the “Extractor Class” — and who are they? They are liberals who gain wealth by using the government to take your money. To (excuse the imagery) milk you like a cow. And make themselves rich.

About That ´Permanent

Many are arguing these days that President Obama has forged a new majority coalition of women, minorities, young people and upscale cultural liberals so large and durable that he can do what no president has done before—pursue a very liberal agenda without serious opposition or defections from his own party. Demography is destiny, this argument holds, and it is irrevocably on the side of Mr. Obama and the Democratic Party. (Snip)Start with the obvious: If demographics were determinative, then Republicans shouldn´t have gained 63 seats in the House of Representatives in 2010—the largest midterm shift since 1938—while also

In a little-noticed email published online Wednesday by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a young Dominican woman wrote nine months ago that she slept with 59-year-old New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez at a series of sex parties organized by Dr. Salomon Melgen, a longtime Menendez campaign donor. “That Senator also likes the youngest and newest girls,” the woman wrote on April 21, 2002, according to an English translation provided to The Daily Caller by a native Spanish speaker.

Karl Lagerfeld—Chanel designer, cat coddler, and Pippa Middleton–face detractor—has taken a startling contrarian stance on Michelle Obama’s new, undeniably (we thought!) adorable bangs. Lagerfeld addressed the First Lady’s hairstyle on Le Petit Journal, a French television show where he had been invited to discuss Paris Fashion Week. As an apparent aside, the ponytailed designer revealed, “I don’t understand the change of hair . . . Frankly, the fringe was a bad idea. It’s not good.”

MSNBC, Huffington Post
respond to ‘heckling’ issue

From the looks of things, MSNBC thinks it did nothing wrong. On Tuesday it aired video with a graphics box talking about how gun rights advocates had “heckled” the testimony of Neil Heslin, the father of a 12/14 victim who participated in a hearing in Hartford, Conn., on gun violence. As the Erik Wemple Blog has argued, Heslin wasn’t heckled, unless you consider the act of responding to a question an act of heckling. After receiving complaints about its handling of the matter, MSNBC indicated it was reviewing the matter. That review apparently wrapped by Wednesday’s edition of “Bashir Live.”

While Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi was in Germany today hoping to attract European investors to put their money in his country, the situation in many cities throughout the most populous Arab country continued to deteriorate. Violence continued, not only in the area around Cairo’s Tahrir Square where the demonstrations that toppled Hosni Mubarak started two years ago, but also in cities along the Suez Canal. Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei called upon Morsi to hold a national dialogue and to form a government of national unity, but there is no indication that the Muslim Brotherhood leader

This week´s warm Washington temperatures had some thinking about rolling the Lawn-Boy out of the garage for the first cut of the year. And we all know what that means: Difficult starts due to E10 gas that gels when it sits. Now, according to a new study, cars and truck may face the same fate thanks to President Obama´s demand for a higher ethanol in the new E15 gas. The fuel industry´s American Petroleum Institute tested the 15 percent ethanol gas approved in 2010 and found it gums up fuel systems, prompts "check engine" lights to come on,

President Obama owes Israel a big thank-you for yesterday’s airstrike on a convoy of Russian-made missiles along the Syrian-Lebanese border. News dispatches from the region say that sophisticated SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles were being shipped to Hezbollah terrorists. With Syria coming apart and Islamists taking the lead among the anti-government rebels, the Israelis did the only sensible thing with the convoy: They took it out. In acting yesterday, Israel sent a healthy message not just to Hezbollah but to its sponsors in Tehran: Its red lines for military intervention are real.

Since abortion is a matter of life and death, politics ought to be secondary when we reflect on the issue. But political considerations aren’t trivial. Over the last 20 years, Democrats have captured the middle ground on abortion. Bill Clinton approximated the public mood by declaring that abortion should be “safe, legal, and rare.” Republicans, on the other hand, have found themselves embroiled in an awkward debate about whether rape victims should be required to carry their pregnancies to term. This asymmetry has been around as long as Roe v. Wade. But why should conservatives let Roe define them?

ORLANDO, Fla.- Attorneys for the former neighborhood watch volunteer charged with shooting Trayvon Martin to death on Wednesday asked for more time to prepare his case, saying prosecutors had been slow to turn over evidence. At the same time, Zimmerman´s lead attorney, Mark O´Mara, renewed his request for donations to George Zimmerman´s legal defense, which he said could cost up to $1 million. "The state has virtually unlimited resources to prosecute George," O´Mara said on Zimmerman´s defense fund website.

Watching Congress take the final steps to pass Obamacare in March 2010 was a bitterly disappointing moment for the law’s opponents. They didn’t have to be told that what was being rammed through the House and Senate was the largest power grab by the federal government in at least a generation, with immense consequences for the nation’s economic vitality and political health. (Snip)Disappointing as these events were, they do not remotely constitute the end of the fight to repeal and replace Obamacare. Indeed, this is a fight conservatives couldn’t walk away from even if they wanted to,

Chuck Hagel, Anti-Semitism,

"Israel Firster," "Jewish Lobby," "Fifth Column," and "Dual Loyalty" are several of the terms used to describe American Jews who care about Israel´s survival in the face of very real and imminently dangerous and existential threats to her long-term viability. And notwithstanding Colin Powell´s assertions to the contrary, the use of such terms on their face has always been considered anti-Semitic. But with the nomination of Chuck Hagel as Obama´s choice to head up the Pentagon, the mainstreaming of anti-Semitism has taken a new direction and may very well be here to stay.

As a professor at Georgetown University, secretary of defense nominee Chuck Hagel taught a foreign policy course based primarily on anti-Israel materials and far left manifestos that castigate America’s role in the world, according to a copy of Hagel’s 2012 course syllabus. Hagel, a former Republican senator from Nebraska, taught a Georgetown course focused on foreign policy since at least 2009 and planned to teach a similar course this year, according to the university’s records. Constructed on the premise that America’s global supremacy is waning, Hagel’s seminar featured writings that criticize America’s standing in the world, advocate in favor

Just because you might be expecting something doesn’t mean you can’t be disappointed when it happens. Following December’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, we have witnessed the spectacle of politicians at every level of government tripping over each other to race before the cameras and proclaim their outrage, not at the perpetrator of the atrocity, but rather at the many law-abiding Americans who are employed in the making of firearms and the many, many more who use them recreationally. Something must be done, they tell us, “for the children.”

47 percent of their crop, to be precise. It’s J.J. Abrams’ world. We’re all just living in it. Luckily, the Supreme Court decided to take the case of the Horne family, so they may end up retaining the right to freely sell the raisin crop they’ve duly produced, but how is it that they must appeal to the highest court in the land for that right? Well, it all started in 1937, as so many good things do, when the federal government began requiring raising farmers to lay aside a tribute portion

The Navy will disassemble it piece by piece in order to avoid damaging the reef rather than tow the multi-million dollar ship off of the reef and perform necessary repairs.

After four years of exhibiting a sort of false bravado, Republican efficacy seems to be reaching a nadir. Since Obama’s re-election, conservative skepticism has transcended long-held doubts about governmental competence. The new trend seems to be to also view Republican leaders — and even ourselves — as impotent. Rush Limbaugh tapped into this pessimism yesterday, when, during his interview with Sen. Marco Rubio, he attempted to undermine immigration reform by saying: “Obama doesn’t care about enforcing existing law.”

KABUL — Sixteen years after he fled from the Taliban, Zia Ahmadi was back at the Kabul airport, waiting for the body of a cousin who tried to do the same. Zia had done what he thought was best for his cousin, Javed Ahmadi, offering a smuggler $15,000 to shuttle him out of Afghanistan and away from insurgents. By December, Javed, 19, was halfway through an arduous 3,500-mile trip from Helmand province to Zia’s home in Sweden, running from the same Taliban that Zia escaped in 1997. But the smuggler’s overloaded skiff capsized off the coast of Greece,

We all know what fueled the sexual revolution: birth control and rock ´n´ roll. But what if that´s not the whole story? What if America´s libido was liberated not by the pill and heady doses of Jim Morrison, but by the lowly prescription drug penicillin. Before penicillin was found to be effective against syphilis during World War II, sex brought with it the risk of syphilis, a disease that can cause blindness, dementia and paralysis. Penicillin can wipe out syphilis with just one shot. As the antibiotic came into wide use in the 1950s, the number of syphilis cases
