The Republican National Committee chose to hold its recent winter meeting in Charlotte because North Carolina was a rare bright spot in last year´s presidential election. (Snip) McCrory first ran for the state´s top office in 2008. He lost to Democrat Bev Perdue in what became a brutal lesson in the overwhelming power of the Obama wave. "In ´08, I got killed by the Obama ground machine," McCrory recalls. "We didn´t even know it was happening. The amount of money Obama put on the ground was something we´ve never seen before in North Carolina."

A federal judge has ruled against an ex-Ohio congressman who sued the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List for contributing to his election defeat. In the unusual case, which former Rep. Steve Driehaus launched two years ago, the Ohio Democrat tried to hold Susan B. Anthony List accountable for spreading "lies" about him -- ultimately inflicting, he claimed, "reputational" and "economic" harm. The defamation case itself raised questions about the limits of rapid-fire ads, billboards and other campaign literature in a political race. In this case, Driehaus complained that the Susan B. Anthony List unfairly accused him

Royal Bank of Scotland could face a £500-million ($786-million, 585-million-euro) fine from British and US authorities for its role in the Libor rate-rigging affair, media reported on Tuesday. The Wall Street Journal, citing people briefed on negotiations, added that US authorities were pushing for a settlement of allegations that would result also in an RBS division pleading guilty to criminal charges. The newspaper said that the deal could be completed within the next fortnight and added that RBS was resisting any guilty plea amid fears it would lose clients and spark costly litigation. More than 100 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, Interstate 8 runs through the mostly untouched Sonoran Desert National Monument. Back in 2010, in addition to cacti, flowers and three distinct mountain ranges, motorists traveling along I-8 also saw signs posted by the Bureau of Land Management, informing them that they had entered an "active drug smuggling area" and might encounter "armed criminals and smuggling vehicles traveling at high rates of speed." "Mexican drug cartels literally do control parts of Arizona," Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu told reporters at the time.

Democratic senator Mary Landrieu said on the Senate floor that Washington´s spending problem exists only on Fox News: "I am not going to keep cutting the discretionary budget, which by the way is not out of control, despite what you hear on Fox News," said Landrieu. The Louisiana senator did say that entitlement spending is a major problem. "It is mandatory spending that is rising rapidly, because the greatest generation that gave us the greatest nation the world has ever heard is dying and they need hospice care, they need Social Security, and they need hospitals."

Barack Obama is really just one of the guys. He wants to take away Joe Sixpack’s guns, but he wants everybody to know that he’s a shooter and intends to keep his own shootin’ iron. Mr. Obama hunts pigeons, not deer or ducks or even pigeons with feathers, but clay pigeons. He’s quite a marksman in a sport that attracts even the country-club elites. “Up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time,” he says. “I have a profound respect for the traditions that trace back in this country for generations,

President Obama joked Monday that some members of the Miami Heat won last year´s NBA championship after honing their game in a pickup basketball game with him on his birthday. "I´m not trying to take all the credit here, coach. But I think it´s clear that going up against me prepared them to go up against Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook," Obama said at a White House event honoring the team´s championship. "Part of the reason they came back was to get another shot against the old guy." Point guard Dwyane Wade riffed off the president´s comments,

Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told a Martin County Republican Women’s group in 2009, “You know what happened, in addition to becoming 11 million a decade later? There were people trying to enter the country legally, who had done the paperwork, who were here legally, who were going through the process, who claimed, all of a sudden, ‘No, no no no , I’m illegal.’ Because it was easier to do the amnesty program than it was to do the legal process.”

It´s a good thing our federal government is going on a strict spending diet to curb its out-of-control borrowing. Otherwise, the latest piece of spending legislation passed Monday worth more than $50 billion might have been substantial. Good grief! Remember -- how can any of us forget? -- that long, hard fight President Obama just staged to squeeze more taxes out of wealthy Americans? The top 2% wealthiest already pay 45% of the taxes. But Democrat Obama felt they needed to pay their "fair share."

Just What is Obama´s idea of a "Fair Shot?" This is a passage we get from the Presidential website entitled Giving Everyone a Fair Shot: So what does that mean for restoring middle-class security in today´s economy? Well, it starts by making sure that everyone in America gets a fair shot at success. The truth is we´ll never be able to compete with other countries when it comes to who´s best at letting their businesses pay the lowest wages, who´s best at busting unions, who´s best at letting companies pollute as much as they want.

Plans for a £50 million ($80m) Earthquake early warning system for California have been unveiled. The ShakeAlert system, which has taken ten years to develop, would give a minute´s warning of a major quake. Experts say this would give residents critical time for residents to ´duck and cover´ and for utilities to power down. It uses a network of 2,000 quake-detecting instruments now in place up and down the state. Its backers say it could warn emergency workers and the public as much as a full minute before a big quake ruptures the ground along any of the faults

Arizona Sen. "Complete the danged fence," McCain cracked in a widely publicized television spot. Less well known is the equally dramatic pivot by Marco Rubio, from 2010 candidate who dismissed McCain’s proposal as “amnesty,” to U.S. senator who on Monday championed reforms McCain said had “very little difference” from his previous plan, which became the blueprint for failed legislation
