In weighing in on the president’s recent assertion not that he plays golf regularly, but that he shoots all the time (“Up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time”), one need only replay Barack Obama’s own skepticism circa 2008 on Hillary Clinton’s similar assertion of her own gun-toting pedigree: “Shame on her. Shame on her, she knows better. She’s running around talking about how this is an insult to sportsmen, how she values the Second Amendment, she’s talking like she’s Annie Oakley! Hillary Clinton’s out there like she’s on the duck blind every Sunday,

President Obama said he would prefer to accomplish his ambitious second-term agenda with the help of Congress but will employ “a judicious use of executive power” where necessary to reach policy goals. Obama’s remarks, made during an interview with the New Republic, come as many in Washington expect the president’s administration to push forward aggressively with a host of regulations in the coming months and years. They also follow Obama’s earlier proposal to combat gun violence through an array of measures, including 23 separate presidential directives that do not need congressional approval. The executive measures do not include

In the third installment of his 52-week sermon series, Nation of Islam leader, Minister Louis Farrakhan, ridiculed the “volatile” American right to own weapons. On Sunday, Farrakhan continued “The Time and What Must Be Done” sermon series by stating that Americans are increasingly angry at the government, and are simultaneously preparing themselves for war. Farrakhan went on to say that the Second Amendment has little relevance in modern society, stating that the constitutional right to bear arms is outdated.

President Obama plans to continue campaigning for his preferred policies rather than negotiate with Congress, an idea he indicated was inspired by Abraham Lincoln. “I always read a lot of Lincoln, and I’m reminded of his adage that, with public opinion, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish; without it, you’re not going to get very far,” Obama told The New Republic. “And spending a lot more time in terms of being in a conversation with the American people as opposed to just playing an insider game here in Washington is an example of the kinds of change

As the Super Bowl approaches, imagine this nightmare scenario for a fan: Captivated by the drama of brothers John and Jim Harbaugh facing off in the big game, you buy a T-shirt online sporting the word "Harbowl!" and the date of the game. Or maybe you buy a "Harbowl" hat. But after you buy it -- and this is the terrifying part -- you learn this "Harbowl" shirt is not official merchandise of the National Football League. "How can that be?!" you cry. " ´Harbowl´ is so similar to ´Super Bowl,´ a registered trademark of the National Football

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba -- Defense attorneys for one of the five accused 9/11 conspirators are pressing the U.S. military to, for the first time, publicly discuss classified details of the so-called CIA-run ´black sites´ in open court. Lawyers for Ali Abdul Aziz Ali will file three pre-trial motions with the U.S. military tribunal here this week in an attempt to get the U.S. government to discuss the Agency-operated overseas detention centers, lead attorney James Connell said Sunday. Ali, along with accused 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and co-conspirators Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin

One-third of New Jerseyans say their personal income was directly affected by Hurricane Sandy, according to a new poll that shows a dwindling number of Garden Staters believe they are better off financially than they were a year ago. A survey by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind found that fewer than one in five, or 18 percent, believe their financial situation is better. That’s down sharply from 32 percent last January. More than half the respondents said they are the “same” as last year, the poll showed. “Whether the glass if half full or empty depends on what expectations you bring

A new report claims Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) “wants an apology” from Beyonce for lip-syncing the national anthem at last week’s presidential inauguration. According to the New York Post, the lawmaker “angrily admitted” during a Sunday press conference, “I have not heard from her before, during or after.” Schumer, who as chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies introduced the entertainer at Tuesday’s festivities, added, “She did not talk to me at all. I didn’t say any words to her, period.” Although she appeared to be belting out the Star-Spangled Banner live at the inauguration,

A white ex-congresswoman with an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association is the front-runner to replace former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in a majority-black Chicagoland district with inner-city neighborhoods wracked by gun violence. At first glance, Debbie Halvorson should have no business winning the Feb. 26 special election. The former Democratic congresswoman was crushed by Jackson in a primary last year. She’s a white Democrat seeking to represent a district in which 54 percent of voters are African-American. And she’s an unapologetic Second Amendment backer — with endorsements from the NRA in two of her previous congressional campaigns

Appearing on Fox’s Happening Now this morning, Fox contributors Kirsten Powers and Tucker Carlson trashed the President Obama/Secretary Clinton joint 60 Minutes interview as “propaganda” befitting of a state-run media organization, not CBS. Asked whether she saw the interview as a “missed opportunity” for “real questions” about the administration’s first term, Daily Beast columnist Powers went off on the entire ordeal: “It was something you expect from state-run media — that kind of level of propaganda as far as I’m concerned,” she said. “60 Minutes was transparently being used as a campaign advertisement, which, you know, if they’re

Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard, one of the fiercest hitters in the game, said he thinks the NFL will not be in existence in 30 years and thinks a player may actually die on the field during a game. "Thirty years from now, I don´t think it will be in existence," Pollard said in an interview with CBS Sports´ Clark Judge. "I could be wrong. It´s just my opinion, but I think with the direction things are going -- where they [NFL rules makers] want to lighten up, and they´re throwing flags and everything

Washington -- The chairman of the House Budget Committee says Republicans will oppose tax increases and, as a result, deep, unpopular budget cuts will likely take effect. Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin told NBC´s "Meet the Press" on Sunday that automatic spending cuts are scheduled to take hold because, quote, "Democrats have opposed our efforts to replace those cuts with others." Democrats have insisted taxes be part of the equation to dodge across-the-board spending cuts that are set to hit the Pentagon and many domestic programs.

What a media era we live in where Fox News´ Greta Van Susteren will have to pull her punches with outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton if she´s to avoid being pilloried by everyone else in media. My guess, though, is that Greta will go for it and that we´ll learn more from her interview Tuesday night than we will from all the other networks combined. Hillary is also granting NBC, CNN, and ABC the opportunity this week to give her a tongue bath, like the one CBS News´

Washington — The Federal Reserve has left little doubt about its plans for the next few months, and thus little mystery about the statement it will release Wednesday after the latest meeting of its policy-making committee. The economy remains weak. The Fed will keep buying bonds to hold down borrowing costs. Inside the central bank, however, debate is once again shifting from whether the Fed should do more to stimulate the economy to when it should start doing less.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is not always focused on his quest for gun control, apparently. Tucked away in New York magazine’s profile of mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, the city’s Napoleonic mayor answered a compliment on his gun control push by checking out a nearby woman: Later in the evening, the host interrupted me to point out that the mayor himself had just arrived. Did I want to meet him? Sure. My friend and I followed the host over, shook Bloomberg’s hand, and my friend thanked him for his position on gun control.

Apparently the media´s desire to serve The State (at least for as long as Barack Obama heads The State) is so strong that the State now trumps The Scoop. Sunday, both ABC News and CBS News had slow-and-over-the-plate opportunities that would make any objective journalist salivate. Instead, though, both organizations chose to bend over backwards to ensure no political harm was done to the Democratic party, and most especially, to the Obama White House. On Thursday we learned that New Jersey Democrat, Sen. Bob Menendez, is under investigation by the F.B.I. for

Now that President Obama has been re-elected, the vaunted jobs council is about to meet its demise. The Obama administration’s original announcement of a jobs council back in 2011 surprised few observers of the partisan political scene; the council was obviously designed as a fig leaf to cover up the administration’s complete lack of direction on economic policy. During its two year existence, that fig leaf council has met just four times formally, and just 18 times informally for “listening and action sessions” – i.e. gobbledygook – in different locations around the country.

President Bashar al-Assad’s mother Anisa Makhlouf and other members of his inner circle have fled to the United Arab Emirates as the regime of the embattled president appeared to disintegrate, recent reports confirmed. Anisa has joined her daughter, Bushra, who had previously fled to Dubai, the London-based Asharq al-Awsat quoted Robert Ford, U.S. ambassador to Syria until the break of the relations between the two countries. Anisa, the widow of late president Hafez al-Assad, is believed to be in her late seventies.

A sinister airborne surveillance camera gives the U.S. military the ability to track movements in an entire city like a real-time Google Street View. The ARGUS-IS array can be mounted on unmanned drones to capture an area of 15 sq/miles in an incredible 1,800MP - that´s 225 times more sensitive than the camera on an iPhone. From 17,500ft the remarkable surveillance system can capture objects as small as 6in on the ground and allows commanders to track movements across an entire battlefield in real time.

New estimates from a Norwegian research project show meeting targets for minimizing global warming may be more achievable than previously thought. After the planet’s average surface temperature rose through the 1990s, the increase has almost leveled off at the level of 2000, while ocean water temperature has also stabilized, the Research Council of Norway said in a statement on its website. After applying data from the past decade, the results showed temperatures may rise 1.9 degrees Celsius if Co2 levels double by 2050, below the 3 degrees predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Conservatives instinctively ground all of their ideas and policies in time-tested philosophies of man and of government. Most successful Republican candidates also paint a picture of what they can do and how their ideas are better than their opponents. This is why people evoke the memory of Ronald Reagan so often; because he is the last Republican candidate for president to conduct his campaign explicitly and consistently within this framework.
