MEXICO CITY — In a country where citizens are regularly victimized by corrupt and abusive police, a court ruling freeing a woman from prison because of police mistreatment would seem welcome. Instead, many Mexicans are outraged. Ending a long legal case that had generated front-page headlines on two continents, the Mexican Supreme Court this week freed Florence Cassez, a 38-year-old French woman jailed for kidnapping, because authorities had trampled her right to due process. The 3-2 ruling came in the midst of a sweeping judicial reform being implemented with millions of dollars in U.S. aid and a small army of U.S. advisors.

If you´re a believer who takes the Bible seriously, you have asked yourself this question many times. I have. It has baffled me. Maybe a quick look at the Bible -- specifically, the Torah -- can clarify matters. Let me say right off -- America does not replace ancient Israel. And we certainly should not bring back old rituals and regulations. But we can look for general principles, just as our founders did.

A Pennsylvania man with a life-long passion for fast food got a whopper of a funeral when his procession made one last visit to a drive-thru Burger King. Marking 88-year-old David S. Kime Jr.´s love of the popular restaurant chain, family and friends picked up 40 Whopper Jr. burgers on the way to the cemetery--including one they buried with him. Described by relatives as a man who ´lived by his own rules´, his daughter, Linda Phiel said, ´His version of eating healthy was the lettuce on the Whopper Jr.´ Saturday´s funeral was organized in conjunction with the Manchester Township Burger

President Barack Obama said if he had a son, he would have to think "long and hard" before he let him play football and suggested he--along with other football fans--watches football against his conscience. "I´m a big football fan, but I have to tell you if I had a son, I´d have to think long and hard before I let him play football," Obama said. In an interview with the left-of-centerThe New Republic, Obama said football will "probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence" and that may allow fans to not have to "examine our consciences

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is a big football fan with two daughters, but if he had a son, he says he´d "have to think long and hard" before letting him play because of the physical toll the game takes. "I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence," Obama tells The New Republic. "In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better

At least 245 people have been killed in a Brazil nightclub after a fire ravaged through the building in the early hours of this morning. Initial reports were that 90 people perished in the blaze, but firefighters quickly updated the figures as the extent of the fire was revealed. The total number of victims is still unknown and there may be hundreds injured, civil police and regional government spokesman Marcelo Arigoni told Radio Gaucha. He told the radio a truck carrying 70 bodies had arrived at the Municipal Sports Centre, which was being used as an improvised morgue. Police believe

Washington -President Barack Obama says gun-control advocates should be better listeners in the debate over firearms in America. In an interview with The New Republic, Obama says he has "a profound respect" for the tradition of hunting that dates back for generations. "And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas," he says. House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said there "basically" is a bipartisan agreement already for immigration reform in the House. President Barack Obama will unveil his plan for comprehensive immigration reform on Tuesday. Boehner made the comments last week at the Ripon Society. "I think there’s a bipartisan group of members that have been meeting now for three or four years," Boehner said. "Frankly, I think they basically have an agreement. I’ve not seen the agreement. I don’t know all the pitfalls in it, but it’s in my view, the right group of members.”

Springfield, IL - Jake McNiece was gone before we even knew he was here. His name might not resonate with you. It didn’t with me until I heard that he had died. After that, it didn’t take long to learn Jake’s story. It’s worth learning. In a nutshell, he was the real-life model for Lee Marvin’s character in the 1967 movie “The Dirty Dozen.” Jake, 93, died in Chatham on Monday.(Snip) The actual group of WWII soldiers the movie is based on was called The Filthy Thirteen. They were rounders — not murderers and psychopaths, as Hollywood portrayed them, but brawlers and no respecters of authority. Source location and text added by Staff.

WASHINGTON — As President Obama settles on a strategy to overhaul the nation´s immigration laws, he faces a quandary that speaks volumes about the bitter nature of politics in a divided capital: The very fact that a plan has Obama´s name on it might be enough to kill it. (Snip) Republicans, they say, would feel compelled to oppose a bill identified explicitly with the president. Better, they advise, to announce broad principles and avoid particulars, even if that means violating a campaign pledge to propose legislation. BRASILIA, Brazil — A fire swept through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday, killing at least 245 people and leaving at least 200 injured, police and firefighters said. Police Maj. Cleberson Braida told local news media that the 245 bodies were brought for identification to a gymnasium in the city of Santa Maria. That toll would make it one of the deadliest nightclub fires more than a decade. The cause of the fire is not yet known, officials said. Officials earlier put the death toll at 180.

There was an 1854 Lefaucheux pinfire pistol carbine on display, as well as an 1876 .22-caliber derringer in a glass box. But neither was for sale. It wouldn´t have mattered if they were. The gun enthusiasts who showed up in Rosemont on Friday for what was billed as the first-ever Chicagoland Gun Show didn´t seem interested in gawking at antique pistols. Some wanted to buy high-powered rifles, semi-automatic handguns and high-capacity magazines. But there wasn´t a single gun dealer at the show, only a Chicago collector who said he was there to show off his collection.

First things first: the Second Amendment to the Constitution is simple and clear. The version of it that was ratified by the states reads as follows: A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, President Obama and a host of senators and congressmen launched an all-out assault on so-called "assault weapons", high-capacity magazines, and gun ownership in general.

It´s hardly a secret. After all, in a letter to a senior officer, no less than a young Bill Clinton openly admitted that many of his cohort to "loath[ed] the military." Still, it´s stunning to hear a modern-day liberal make a similar admission. On her MSNBC show today, Melissa Harris-Perry stated that the U.S. military is "despised as an engine of war by many progressives." View the video after the jump. MHP made her admission as a preface to observing that our military has also been "a leading institution in America´s fight for racial equality." No doubt.

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry, finding biblical significance in the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, assured thousands of activists at Saturday´s Rally for Life at the Texas Capitol that this legislative session will build on past efforts to restrict abortion. "The ideal world is one without abortion. Until then, we will continue to pass laws to ensure abortions are as rare as possible," Perry told a crowd. Joined by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Attorney General Greg Abbott and anti-abortion groups, Perry said he was with "men and women who understand those Biblical stories."

Only CBS reporter Sheryl Attkisson by her persistence and competence keeps me from burying my head in shame.

Have you heard much about President Obama’s $787,000,000,000 economic “stimulus” (now estimated to cost $831,000,000,000) lately? In its last report, published in 2011, the president’s own Council of Economic Advisors released an estimate showing that, for every $317,000 in “stimulus” spending that had by then gone out the door, only one job had been created or saved. Even in Washington, that’s not considered good bang for the buck.

IN 1942, 71 years before last week’s Pentagon decision allowing women on the front lines of combat, the United States government established the Women’s Army Corps, with Athena as its insignia, and welcomed our country’s first female military recruits. One of these pioneering women was a corporal from Big Spring, Tex., named Nellie Gray. After the war ended, Gray finished college (with an assist from the G.I. Bill) and moved to Washington, D.C.,

In September 2008, Sarah Palin secretly met with Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes during her campaign tour through New York, a stop which included a friendly chit-chat with Henry Kissinger and a not-so-friendly chit-chat with Katie Couric. The private sit-down was a chance for Ailes and Palin to get to know each other. Ailes, who has said, "I never did focus groups on any talent I put on the air. It was all done out of my gut," spotted something early in the former Alaska Governor.

Growing up in a big, bubbly, close-knit family with six brothers and sisters, Robert Suchan´s role models were his beautiful mother Janene ("like Barbara Eden meets Grace Kelly meets Carol Brady and June Cleaver"), whose picture he keeps in his wallet, and his Aunt Barbara ("Eve Arden meets Jo Anne Worley meets Mrs. Roper, with a touch of Bea Arthur"). In time they would provide the ruggedly handsome Irish Catholic Long Island native — he looks like a cross between Alec Baldwin and Vince Vaughn — inspiration and a livelihood. The awakening came with the Dawn. As in dishwashing liquid.
