Diesel fumes more damaging

Diesel fumes are significantly more damaging to health than those from petrol engines, according to research which shows that related air pollution contributes to lung disease, heart attacks, asthma and other respiratory problems. The findings, published by the Department for Energy and Climate Change, are an embarrassment for successive governments, which have encouraged a switch to diesel since 2001 by linking road and company car tax to CO2 emissions. Diesel engines have been billed as "green" by car makers, governments and environmental groups because they are more fuel-efficient and emit less CO2 than petrol. Vehicles with low fuel economy

DeMint to GOP elders: Game over,

Sporting his new hat as the head of the Heritage Foundation, former Sen. Jim DeMint said Saturday said that conservatives should not rely on the GOP establishment to deliver the movement´s message. He said it is time to take matters into their own hands. Addressing the National Review Institute´s "Future of Conservatism" summit, Mr. DeMint said that conservatives must take charge of the way the movement is perceived. "Conservatives have given the sole distribution rights of our ideas, our beliefs and our values - at least in the political sphere - to the Republican party,"

The trio of Southern gentlemen came to the Senate together in 2003, the leading edge of a renegade Republican class set on shaking up the chamber’s staid ways and aggressively promoting the Bush White House’s conservative agenda. Ten years later, Sens. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), Saxby Chambliss (Ga.) and Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.) are now establishment dealmakers and elder statesmen — roles that earn them respect in Washington but could lead to tough challenges from fellow Republicans when they run for re-election next year.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. has released a 30 second public announcement calling on the citizens of Milwaukee to familiarize themselves with a firearm and aid the police in defending life between the time they dial 911 and the time the police arrive. Directing his comments to the public, Clarke said: "With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting isn´t your best option. You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under your bed, or fight back." He added: "Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself

Texas senator Ted Cruz addressed the NRI Summit earlier today. Wearing a business suit and black cowboy boots, he had the podium removed from the stage so he could roam freely, and spoke without notes. In his remarks, Cruz offered guidance for his fellow GOP lawmakers. On his way out, I asked him to pass along some of that advice for National Review Online readers who couldn’t be here today, and about the role that the NRSC, of which he–along with Ohio senator Rob Portman– serves as vice chair, will play in the 2014 election. Nashville, Tenn. – A brutal attack left a man with broken facial bones and severe injuries and it happened within a crowd of more than 100 police officers and thousands of on-lookers. On New Year´s Eve 2013 Bobby Lewis and his cousin came to downtown Nashville to celebrate. He said while walking down to the Bash on Broadway they were approached by 4 or 5 men and attacked. "They kind of ran up on us and next thing you know they are in a confrontation with us and I am like, ´just take our phones guys, just leave us alone,"

Nashville, TN - People who have managed to buy a gun despite the high demand and empty shelves at many area gun stores may now be facing a new problem. Gun stores around Nashville are running out of ammunition. It´s flying off the shelves so quickly, some store owners are putting limits on what customers can buy - if there is anything left to sell in the first place. The Nashville Gun Shop receives about 100 calls a day from customers with the same problem. In 2013, the gold rush is on .22 caliber bullets. "We cannot get any. We probably have

A retired general of the Israel Defense Forces cautions the U.S. military from acting too quickly to incorporate women into combat roles. Gen. Yitzkah Gershon is a 32-year veteran of commanding troops in the IDF, which have counted women among its frontline troops for decades. Gershon has marveled at female soldier´s ability to perform in combat situations, but warns against sudden changes to long-standing military institutions. "We have misconceptions. On a Sunday night at Dodger Stadium in 1986, Archbishop Roger M. Mahony celebrated Mass in flawless Spanish. In an era when immigrants in Los Angeles were routinely derided as parasites and criminals, the archbishop told the crowd of 55,000 that whether they were born in Puebla, San Salvador or Managua, they were part of his flock.(Snip)But even as cheers of "Rogelio! Rogelio!" rained down from the upper decks, Mahony was covering up the sexual abuse of some of the most vulnerable in the church, including in his beloved Latino community, church records show.

On Jan. 22, our nation commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion in America by a 7-2 vote. Steeped in “right to privacy” language, the court ruled that women should have a legal right to abortion. On Friday, hundreds of thousands flocked to the nation’s capitol to commemorate the 55 million lives that have been lost to abortion in the last 40 years, and the mothers and fathers who still bear the scars of their choices. We remembered the 55 million children’s lives lost to abortion, but also that millions

Israel Keyes showed no remorse as he described in merciless detail how he´d abducted and strangled an 18-year-old woman, then demanded ransom, pretending she was alive. (Snip) In 40 hours of interviews over eight months, Keyes talked of many killings; authorities believe there were nearly a dozen. He traveled from Vermont to Alaska hunting for victims. Comprehensive immigration reform could make millions of people suddenly eligible for assistance under President Obama´s healthcare law, assuming a final deal paves the way for undocumented immigrants to receive papers. Illegal aliens are now prohibited from purchasing coverage through the Affordable Care Act´s insurance exchanges, which will launch next year. They are also ineligible for Medicaid under most circumstances, making the law´s expansion of the program fruitless for people without documents. Even young illegal immigrants with "deferred action" status, known as "DREAMers," cannot access the law´s benefits.

The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget calls for military families and retirees to pay sharply more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched. The proposal is causing a major rift within the Pentagon, according to U.S. officials. Several congressional aides suggested the move is designed to increase the enrollment in Obamacare’s state-run insurance exchanges. The disparity in treatment between civilian and uniformed personnel is causing a backlash within the military that could undermine recruitment and retention. The proposed increases in health care payments by service members, which must be approved by

President Obama has shown increasing contempt for the constitutional limits on his power, and the courts are finally awakening to the news. A unanimous panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Friday that the President´s non-recess recess appointments are illegal and an abuse of executive power. On January 4, 2012, Mr. Obama bypassed the Senate´s advice and consent power by naming three new members of the National Labor Relations Board and appointing Richard Cordray to run the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Other Presidents have made recess appointments and we´ve supported that executive authority.

Scientists have known for years that birds and humans navigate by the stars, but this findings is the first believable evidence for a similar ability in insects, according to researchers. This is also the first known evidence of any animal navigating via the Milky Way as opposed to the stars.
