Researchers from Lund University in Sweden have discovered the secret to dung beetle navigation, according to a news release from Cell Press. Researchers found that dung beetles use the Milky Way galaxy to navigate at night. Scientists have known for years that birds and humans navigate by the stars, but this findings is the first believable evidence for a similar ability in insects, according to researchers. This is also the first known evidence of any animal navigating via the Milky Way as opposed to the stars.

Biases upfront: I´m a 46 year-old health nut obsessed with exercise and eating right. I don’t smoke or drink, and there are supermodels who worry less about their weight. However, I do admire those who don´t live like that; who might not live as long as I do, but will probably enjoy their overall quality of life more than my somewhat Spartan one. Oh, and I also realize that this is America. And if people want to pursue happiness through a double cheeseburger and a pack of Newports, any joyless, left-wing bossy-pants who has a

New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez is scheduled to appear on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday amid the rekindled firestorm surrounding his trips to the Dominican Republic. Several people at the network, including anchor George Stephanopoulos, haven’t responded when Breitbart News has asked if Stephanopoulos or reporter Martha Raddatz will ask Menendez about his alleged sexual escapades abroad. This reporter interviewed two Dominican Republic women in November, while reporting for The Daily Caller before joining Breitbart News, who claimed Menendez paid them for sex around Easter time this year. The encounter apparently took place at Casa de Campo,

In my research for the film I made on Governor Palin, The Undefeated, I was constantly amazed at the anti-establishment stands she took at every step in her rise to power. Moves that a conventional politician would run from, she embraced: in Wasilla, in Juneau, and in the rise of the Tea Party. Her ability to see “over the hill” to what is really important, what really matters, is what sets her apart. Andrew Breitbart embraced the Governor as a fellow warrior in the long struggle against a detached and venal political/media complex. He lives on in spirit

Moscow - Russia and Kazakhstan will upgrade their relations to a new level of cooperation, foreign ministers of the two countries said Friday, denying reports of discords over a space center in Kazakhstan. (Snip) Idrisov and his host Sergei Lavrov also denied recent Russian media reports that the two countries have been at odds over the Baikonur space center which Russia rents from Kazakhstan. Astana earlier formally informed Moscow that it has to decrease launches of Proton rockets from Baikonur from 17 to 12 times this year, citing environmental concerns.

A developer wants the city of Detroit to sell an island that is now a city park to a group of buyers looking to transform it into the newest U.S. commonwealth. Rodney Lockwood, a developer from Bingham Farms, a village of 1,100 people about a half-hour from Detroit, is pushing for the city to sell the 982-acre Belle Isle for $1 billion to a group of investors who ´believe in individual freedom, liberty and free markets,´ according to a website set up by proponents of the concept, commonwealthofbelleisle.com. During the next three decades, the buyers would establish a ´remarkable new

A new rule going into effect Sunday could cost you more when shopping with a credit card at some stores. Visa and Mastercard have agreed to let merchants add a service charge equal to the cost of processing a credit transaction to the bottom line. The cost of processing is usually 1.5 to 3 perc cent, and merchants are capped at a 4 per cent fee under the agreement.[Snip]Merchants will still not be allowed to add a surcharge to debit card transactions. However, few stores seem interested in raising their customer´s costs. ´We have discussed the settlement with many,

As the football commentators might put it, it was a week of two speeches.[Snip] Mr Obama’s oration got remarkably little analysis in the British press--perhaps because second presidential inaugurals are something of a dramatic let-down. Or maybe because what he said sounded so tired and familiar to British ears. Indeed, the words that created a storm of partisan recrimination in the United States because they were so contentious in domestic terms--an aggressively uncompromising new stand in the war of attrition between the Democratic White House and a Republican Congress--came across here as recycled New Labour-speak: “But we have always understood

Just an hour before Memphis Mayor A C Wharton unveiled a plan on Friday to attack gun use by teenagers, two teenagers were wounded in a gun battle in the parking lot of the Westwood Community Center in southwest Memphis. "Enough is enough," said Wharton, who had made a similar protest when he appeared at Westwood in September to condemn a killing at the same community center. "There are too many doggone guns on our streets," the mayor said Friday. "All you have to do is watch the news, read the newspapers and in some neighborhoods walk out on the

A number of progressive pundits have been urging Obama and the Democrats to sweep aside all opposition to their ultra-leftist agenda by destroying the Republican Party. Leading the pack of yapping hyenas is John Dickerson, who in an op-ed piece for Slate Magazine urged Obama to “go for the throat” and “destroy the GOP” in order to achieve his transformational goals.

So the question is, as Van Susteren recovers, what will Mrs. Palin do? The possibilities are endless. Which of these do you think she´ll pick? •Sign on as the official cheerleader for the Palin-Davis Iron Dog snowmachine racing team? •Challenge Democrat Mark Begich for a Senate seat to which she always believed former Gov. Frank Murkowski should have appointed her?

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is sharing his regrets about his "fiscal-cliff" strategy, less than a month after the House bitterly swallowed a last-minute deal hatched in the Senate. In a private speech to the Ripon Society on Tuesday, Boehner said that he should have taken a different course after the November election by immediately demanding that the Senate produce a bill to avert the worst parts of a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that were due to hit on Jan. 1. Instead, Boehner delivered a formal speech at the Capitol on the day after President Obama won a second term,

"We have proposed the establishment of a military organization comprising Muslim countries´ armed forces in order to defend the rights of the oppressed people" including Palestinians, Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi was quoted as saying. Muslim states should not be third-rate powers, but must turn into one superior military power and do not allow any aggressor to think about invading Islamic countries, said the Iranian defense minister.

Freshman Senator Ted Cruz challenged the Republican Party to return to championing growth and opportunity for the lower and working classes during a lunchtime address at the National Review Institute Conference Saturday afternoon. Speaking without a lectern or notes, Cruz moved easily around the stage as he presented his vision for the Republican Party’s future to the audience at the conference. “The policies of the Obama administration have fundamentally failed the communities struggling to climb the economic ladder,” Cruz said.

Fukuoka - Erectile dysfunction drugs and a phenol found in green tea may be effective in fighting cancer when administered together, according to research on mice conducted by a Kyushu University academic. In the study published Friday in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, professor Hirofumi Tachibana said the treatment’s clinical trials on humans are scheduled to begin in the United States later this year. But he cautioned the public against trying the concoctions at home due to possible side effects. In 2004, Tachibana found that the EGCG type of catechin found in green tea suppressed cancer

As President Obama faces pressure on the left to defend federal entitlement programs from the benefit cuts that the Republicans say are necessary to keep the programs solvent decades down the road, one part of Social Security could fall short of paying out full benefits within a few years -- even while Obama is still president. Over the long term, Social Security and Medicare have promised tens of trillions of dollars more in benefits than the nation can pay for under current policies. But Social Security´s disability trust fund is in even worse shape, and current estimates say by 2016

Springfield - Illinois fell to the bottom of all 50 states in the rankings of a major credit ratings agency Friday following the failure of Gov. Pat Quinn and lawmakers to fix the state´s hemorrhaging pension system during this month´s lame-duck session. Standard & Poor´s Ratings Service downgraded Illinois in what is the latest fallout over the $96.8 billion debt to five state pension systems. The New York firm´s ranking signaled that taxpayers may pay tens of millions of dollars more in interest when the state borrows money for roads and other projects. Ms Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook, said that women are held back at work by stereotypes firms are unwilling to talk about. She said employees faced non-overt discrimination as well as overt discrimination and a lack of flexibility. The 43-year-old mother-of-two called for a much more open dialogue about gender, which included discussing with female employees whether they plan to have children,

(Snip) The Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives is the only public watchdog left in America at the moment, and Congressman Wolf should be commended for believing that the Benghazi attack and botched response from the Obama Administration rises to the level of deserving a select committee.
