Just an hour before Memphis Mayor A C Wharton unveiled a plan on Friday to attack gun use by teenagers, two teenagers were wounded in a gun battle in the parking lot of the Westwood Community Center in southwest Memphis. "Enough is enough," said Wharton, who had made a similar protest when he appeared at Westwood in September to condemn a killing at the same community center. "There are too many doggone guns on our streets," the mayor said Friday. "All you have to do is watch the news, read the newspapers and in some neighborhoods walk out on the

A number of progressive pundits have been urging Obama and the Democrats to sweep aside all opposition to their ultra-leftist agenda by destroying the Republican Party. Leading the pack of yapping hyenas is John Dickerson, who in an op-ed piece for Slate Magazine urged Obama to “go for the throat” and “destroy the GOP” in order to achieve his transformational goals.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is out of a job at Fox News, freeing the host of "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" to begin rehab from the long and exhaustive task of lobbing softballs. So the question is, as Van Susteren recovers, what will Mrs. Palin do? The possibilities are endless. Which of these do you think she´ll pick? •Sign on as the official cheerleader for the Palin-Davis Iron Dog snowmachine racing team? •Challenge Democrat Mark Begich for a Senate seat to which she always believed former Gov. Frank Murkowski should have appointed her?

Boehner full of regret

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is sharing his regrets about his "fiscal-cliff" strategy, less than a month after the House bitterly swallowed a last-minute deal hatched in the Senate. In a private speech to the Ripon Society on Tuesday, Boehner said that he should have taken a different course after the November election by immediately demanding that the Senate produce a bill to avert the worst parts of a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that were due to hit on Jan. 1. Instead, Boehner delivered a formal speech at the Capitol on the day after President Obama won a second term,

"We have proposed the establishment of a military organization comprising Muslim countries´ armed forces in order to defend the rights of the oppressed people" including Palestinians, Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi was quoted as saying. Muslim states should not be third-rate powers, but must turn into one superior military power and do not allow any aggressor to think about invading Islamic countries, said the Iranian defense minister.

Freshman Senator Ted Cruz challenged the Republican Party to return to championing growth and opportunity for the lower and working classes during a lunchtime address at the National Review Institute Conference Saturday afternoon. Speaking without a lectern or notes, Cruz moved easily around the stage as he presented his vision for the Republican Party’s future to the audience at the conference. “The policies of the Obama administration have fundamentally failed the communities struggling to climb the economic ladder,” Cruz said.

Roughly 500 people gathered together Friday for the first evening of National Review Institute Summit to discuss the future of conservatism in America. Krauthammer, a nationally syndicated columnist and Fox News regular, discussed what Republican party’s past and future in a wide-ranging on-stage interview with current National Review editor—and onetime Krauthammer research assistant—Rich Lowry. “I’m happy to be anywhere where Juan Williams can’t interrupt me,” Krauthammer quipped at the beginning of the interview.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military alliance says it has made the first set of Patriot missiles operational on the Turkey-Syria border. The Netherlands was the first of three countries to activate its Patriot missile batteries in the southern Turkish city of Adana on Saturday. NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander for Europe Admiral James Stavridis has backed the deployment of Patriot missiles, saying it shows the alliance’s willingness to defend allies facing threats. Washington - Senior Japanese and U.S. officials have agreed to cooperate to improve the capabilities of northwest African countries to combat militant groups as part of a regionwide counterterrorism campaign. The agreement, reached at a meeting Friday in Washington between Ambassador to the United States Kenichiro Sasae and U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, came after dozens of foreign workers, including 10 Japanese nationals, were killed by Islamic militants during last week’s hostage crisis at the Ain Amenas gas complex in Algeria.

Fukuoka - Erectile dysfunction drugs and a phenol found in green tea may be effective in fighting cancer when administered together, according to research on mice conducted by a Kyushu University academic. In the study published Friday in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, professor Hirofumi Tachibana said the treatment’s clinical trials on humans are scheduled to begin in the United States later this year. But he cautioned the public against trying the concoctions at home due to possible side effects. In 2004, Tachibana found that the EGCG type of catechin found in green tea suppressed cancer

As President Obama faces pressure on the left to defend federal entitlement programs from the benefit cuts that the Republicans say are necessary to keep the programs solvent decades down the road, one part of Social Security could fall short of paying out full benefits within a few years -- even while Obama is still president. Over the long term, Social Security and Medicare have promised tens of trillions of dollars more in benefits than the nation can pay for under current policies. But Social Security´s disability trust fund is in even worse shape, and current estimates say by 2016

A federal court delivered a serious blow to the Environmental Protection Agency’s renewable fuel agenda, ruling that the agency exceeded its authority by mandating refiners use cellulosic biofuels, which isn’t commercially available. The court sided with the country’s chief oil and gas lobby, the American Petroleum Institute, in striking down the 2012 EPA mandate that would have forced refineries to purchase more than $8 million in credits for 8.65 million of gallons of the cellulosic biofuel. However, none of the biofuel is commercially available. “[W]e agree with API that EPA’s 2012 projection

Have you heard much about President Obama’s $787,000,000,000 economic “stimulus” (now estimated to cost $831,000,000,000) lately? In its last report, published in 2011, the president’s own Council of Economic Advisors released an estimate showing that, for every $317,000 in “stimulus” spending that had by then gone out the door, only one job had been created or saved. Even in Washington, that’s not considered good bang for the buck. Moreover, that was the fifth consecutive “stimulus” report that showed this number getting progressively worse. Alas, that was the last report

When I heard that the D.C. The same day Obama made the NLRB appointments he also appointed Cordray to head up the Consumer Financial Protection Board. Senate Republicans had filibustered Cordray’s appointment in 2011. There is a separate lawsuit before the courts challenging the constitutionality of Obama’s appointment of Cordray. No doubt the Obama Administration was anticipating this ruling. You likely have a cellphone that you bought from a carrier, like AT&T, Verizon or Sprint, and that phone only works on that carrier´s cellular and data network -- unless you "unlock" it. That is a software process that allows the phone to work on other carriers if you put in a new SIM card or want to take the phone to another carrier for service. If that sounds complicated to you and like something you wouldn´t bother with, then today´s news won´t matter to you. But if that´s something you´ve done before or have thought about doing,

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco city officials preparing for the 49ers’ Super Bowl game against the Baltimore Ravens are hoping to avoid a repeat of the violence and vandalism that marred World Series celebrations last year. A total of 36 people were arrested during post-game celebrations in October after the San Francisco Giants’ World Series victory against the Detroit Tigers, 23 of them for felonies. Celebrants lit a number of bonfires in the middle of Mission Street, broke windows and, in one notorious incident, set a Muni 8X-Bayshore Express bus on fire at Market and Kearny streets.
