The individual is not only best qualified to provide his own personal defense, he is the only one qualified to do so. Karl Marx summed up Communism as “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” This is a good, pithy saying, which, in practice, has succeeded in bringing, upon those under its sway, misery, poverty, rape, torture, slavery, and death. For the saying implies but does not name the effective agency of its supposed utopia. The agency is called “The State,” and the motto, fleshed out, for the benefit of the

Four days after President Obama pledged to "protect and defend the Constitution," the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that he violated that oath in making several appointments last year. The court said Obama´s three "recess" appointments to the National Labor Relations Board weren´t recess appointments at all, since the Senate was still in session when he made them. Assuming the Supreme Court upholds the panel´s ruling, all the decisions the board made over the past year will be nullified, since without those three there weren´t enough members on the board to make any rulings at all.

Charlotte, North Carolina - Reince Priebus pledged to grow his party by making direct appeals to minority and young voters as well as dedicating campaign resources to try and win in traditional Democratic states, as members of the Republican National Committee re-elected him Friday to a second two-year term at their Winter Meeting. "We must compete in every state and every region, building relationships with communities we haven´t before," he said. "At the RNC, we are dropping red and blue analysis. We must be a party concerned about every American in every neighborhood." Last month, Priebus created a task

Mark Gaston Pearce, chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, issued the following statement in reaction to today’s DC Appeals Court decision that President Obama use of recess appointments to install three people on the NLRB last year was unconstitutional. The action renders the board without a quorum to act and potentially invalidates a year’s worth of actions and rulings by it. Pearce indicated that the NLRB will attempt to continue on regardless: The Board respectfully disagrees with today’s decision and believes that the President’s position in the matter will ultimately be upheld. It should be noted that

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) on Thursday outlined a slate of climate change actions that President Obama could execute with his own authority. The lawmakers conveyed a bleak outlook for climate legislation this Congress, noting considerable Republican opposition in the House. But they said Obama’s climate comments during his Monday inaugural address raised the prospects for administrative action to address the issue. “Congress has not been interested in acting, especially in the House, in the last two years. So we’re calling on the president to develop a plan for the administration to take

President Obama, in dogged pursuit of his liberal Nirvana, is free to lift the ban on women serving in combat positions. He is, alas, unable to repeal the laws of nature, physics or gravity. Ask a combat veteran you know how he would have felt knowing that, after being wounded in combat, the only person around to pick him up and carry him to safety was a 5-foot-3, 120-pound woman. Ask any active duty serviceman how he’d feel knowing that, as he lay on the ground bleeding, the only thing between him and a cave-hardened Tali-ban killer

Federal Drug Administration advisers voted today to restrict access to certain kinds of prescription drugs in an effort to fight drug abuse. The vote had experts divided over the risk of drug abuse as weighed against the risk of increased pain or difficulty for patients on the medication. “It will have an impact on a lot of patients who have been receiving them for some time for legitimate purposes,” Dr. Lynn Webster, president-elect of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, said per Health Day News ahead of the vote. The FDA rule change is designed to implement

TOPEKA — A Kansas House committee has endorsed legislation to restrict political fundraising by public employee unions. The measure would prohibit groups representing teachers and government workers from automatically deducting money from members´ paychecks to finance political activities. Public employees still could contribute to public labor organizations, but would have to submit a payment instead of having the amount deducted straight from a paycheck.

Sarah Palin will no longer be a paid contributor to Fox News. The former Alaska governor and the network have parted ways, a source close to Palin told ABC News. The same source said it was her decision to leave the network and that Fox offered her an opportunity to renew her contract. Fox News did not immediately return ABC News´ request for comment, but Fox News Executive Vice President Bill Shine told The New York Times in a statement, "We have thoroughly enjoyed our association with Gov. Palin. We wish her the best in her future endeavors."

Fascism is a system by which enterprise remains owned privately but is marshalled by the power of the state to serve its ends. Fascists use the state’s power to suppress opposition. Take a look at what Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is trying to do to the firearms industry. The mayor is urging that banks to stop lines of credit, financing for acquisitions and expansions and financial advising. In a letter sent Friday to the CEOs of Bank Of America and TD Bank, Emanuel said: “In the past, the gun industry has stood in opposition to these safety measures.

One of our Tatler readers alerted me to this story in comments on another post. It seems that GEICO, the insurance company whose ads feature cavemen, Eddie Money, two bluegrass pickers and a loveable gecko from origins unknown, has canceled a customer’s policy because the customer is engaged in the firearms industry. Here is the letter that GEICO sent to the canceled customer. Click to enlarge. The letter was originally posted here, with little context to explain it. The blog Moonbattery picked it up, which is where our reader saw it. What’s going on here? The letter is straightforward.

Gabriel Sherman should be flattered. People seem to believe that the New York Magazine writer’s pending, unauthorized biography of Roger Ailes will be a big deal. Look at all the attention that’s come his way since he started working on it: Last spring, he saw his subscription to the Putnam County News and Recorder summarily cancelled. That’s the community paper published by Elizabeth Ailes, the wife of Roger Ailes. “I don’t want to get into a financial transaction with him and his credit card,” Elizabeth Ailes explained to the Erik Wemple Blog last June regarding the subscription cutoff.

RUSH: Ladies and gentlemen, I need to share something with you here. It´ll be 25 years in August that I´ve been doing this show. And that´s long enough to notice things that you can´t possibly notice in your first five years or even ten. I have to confess, when I first became aware of women in combat as a political issue

Assault Weapons Ban Lacks Democratic Votes to Pass Senate

A proposed ban on sales of assault weapons would be defeated in the U.S. Senate today unless some members changed their current views, based on a Bloomberg review of recent lawmaker statements and interviews. At least six of the 55 senators who caucus with Democrats have recently expressed skepticism or outright opposition to a ban, the review found. That means Democrats wouldn’t have a simple 51-vote majority to pass the measure, let alone the 60 votes needed to break a Republican filibuster to bring it to a floor vote. A ban on the military-style weapons is among the

Barack Obama carried Virginia´s 13 electoral votes in both 2008 and 2012, and some Republicans in Richmond would like to prevent anyone from doing so again.(Snip) Republicans in Virginia and a handful of other battleground states are pushing for far-reaching changes to the electoral college in an attempt to counter recent success by Democrats. In the vast majority of states, the presidential candidate who wins receives all of that state´s electoral votes. The proposed changes would instead apportion electoral votes by congressional district, a setup far more favorable to Republicans.

Former presidential candidate Herman Cain says he won’t run for Georgia’s open Senate seat because he is focusing on his new radio show. Reacting to the news Friday that Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss will not seek re-election in 2014, Cain said, “No I’m not running!” in a statement provided to The Daily Caller by his spokeswoman. “My attention is laser focused on exposing the economic pain and suffering to come from a second Obama term, part of which is via my new nationally syndicated talk radio show that is finishing its first week on the air,” he said.

The Justice Department is taking the first steps toward carrying out President Obama’s executive actions on gun control. Attorney General Eric Holder on Friday released three proposals to strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which was one of the 23 actions ordered by Obama last week to tackle gun violence. The proposed regulations would give local law-enforcement agencies access to the gun-sale database that is maintained by the FBI. The rules would also preserve records of denied weapons sales indefinitely. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act already requires federal background checks for gun purchases, but not every firearm

The Washington, D.C., board of education earned widespread mockery this week when it proposed allowing high school students -- in the nation´s own capital -- to skip a basic U.S. government course to graduate. But this is fiddlesticks compared to what the federal government is doing to eliminate American children´s core knowledge base in English, language arts and history. Thanks to the "Common Core" regime, funded with President Obama´s stimulus dollars and bolstered by duped Republican governors and business groups, deconstructionism is back in style. Traditional literature is under fire. Moral relativism is increasingly the norm. "Standards" is Orwell-speak

In 1995, Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) went on the record about the fact that she had a concealed carry permit and carried a concealed handgun when she walked back and forth to the hospital to see her ailing husband. She was also dealing with threats from a terror group, the World Liberation Front. The group had tried to bomb her house on one occasion and had shot out her windows on another. Reflecting on those moments, Feinstein said: I know the sense of helplessness that people feel, I know the urge to arm yourself, because that´s what I did.

The 48-year-old Arlington man pleaded guilty in October to violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, which no one had been convicted under in 27 years. He was sentenced Friday in federal court in Alexandria. Kiriakou has admitted to leaking the name of a covert officer and to telling reporters that another agent was involved in an operation to capture al-Qaida terrorist Abu Zubaydah, according to prosecutors. Newt Gingrich on Thursday night interrogated the gun-grabbing Piers Morgan, pushing the CNN host as to what his real motives are. An aggressive Gingrich insisted, "So, why don´t you share your real view?...Isn´t your real view that you would ban pistols if you could?" [See video below. MP3 audio here.] The Republican also told the British anchor why the Founding Fathers were able to defeat "your army." Morgan swore that his concern was "the high-powered guns of any variety which can fire 30 or 40 or more rounds in less than a minute."
