The U.S. military reportedly ordered soldiers to remove a cross and a steeple from atop a chapel and to board up cross-shaped windows at a remote American forward operating base in Afghanistan. The removal of Christian symbols from the chapel at Forward Operating Base Orgun-E came after a solider complained — leading American Atheists president David Silverman to send a letter to the Pentagon. “Soldiers with minority religious beliefs and atheists often feel like second-class citizens when Christianity is seemingly officially endorsed by their own base,” Silverman told Fox News.

Despite new evidence the Community Reinvestment Act led to riskier lending and played a key role in the subprime mortgage crisis, the Obama administration is broadening the anti-redlining regulation´s authority and scope, spooking bankers. A recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, the nation´s pre-eminent economic research group, states that the CRA "clearly" had a major impact on the flood of subprime loans made in the late 1990s and 2000s, which directly led to the housing crisis.

The United States is facing a catastrophic cyber attack by nations or non-state groups that could cripple the country’s economy, a former high-ranking U.S. intelligence official said on Thursday. Retired Vice Adm. Mike McConnell, who headed both the National Security Agency (NSA) and served as director of national intelligence, said in a speech that one example of a devastating cyber attack would be the crippling of the U.S. economy through cyber attacks on banks and financial institutions. “We have a national problem and it is significant. The next big issue will be a cyber 9/11,” McConnell said during

Republicans expressed satisfaction Thursday at news Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, the top Justice Department figure who had knowledge of the botched "Fast and Furious" gun-walking operation, is resigning. "He knew about reckless tactics, failed to take seriously allegations that they were continuing, and only owned up to his failures once they were publicly exposed," said House oversight committee Chairman Darrell E. Issa, who led a months-long investigation into the botched operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Jennifer Bigham, from Modesto, California, admitted killing the toddler in 2010 and was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity. After doctors ruled she is now sane, Bigham has been allowed to walk free and was released from jail on Tuesday. The 26-year-old was pictured smiling in her blue hospital gown as she was released from the hospital.

Among other anecdotes, Hastings admitted that he once had the opportunity to ask the president hard questions, but was so similarly moved by his presence that he only asked “soft” questions. The AP reported Thursday that the Justice Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development´s inspector general are investigating whether USAID general counsel Lisa Gomer interfered last year to guarantee that a now-canceled bid for a “senior government-to-government assistance adviser” would be won by the agency´s retiring chief financial officer, David Ostermeyer.

President Obama has nominated my former boss, Mary Jo White, to be the next chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He could not have made a better choice. I worked for Mary Jo for nearly a decade when she was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York for nine years, from 1993-2002. It’s not enough to say she’s one of the best lawyers in the country; she’s also one of the best people I’ve been fortunate to know. She is whip smart and tough. She is also a model of integrity and rectitude. She will do what the SEC ought to do: aggressive enforcement against

The US lender said investors face a treacherous moment as central banks start fretting about inflation and shift gears, threatening a surge in bond yields. This happened in 1994 under Federal Reserve chief Alan Greenspan when yields on US 30-year Treasuries jumped 240 basis points over a nine-month span, setting off a “savage reversal of fortune in leveraged areas of fixed income markets”. A similar shock this year is “likely” if the US economy continues to gather strength. “The moment we hear the first rhetorical talk of exit strategies by central banks this could turn,” said chief investment strategist,

Gun Control: We really don´t want to say it, but we have to because it´s true: The Democrats aren´t letting a tragedy go to waste — they are pushing a firearms ban on top of the victims of the Newtown shooting. Led by the once pistol-packing Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the Democrats have put forth legislation that would outlaw more than 150 types of weapons, from rifles to pistols to shotguns. They are calling it the "Assault Weapons Ban of 2013." But it´s more like the "Second Amendment Violation of the Century."

The media herd is stunned to discover that Barack Obama is a man of the left. After 699 teleprompted presidential speeches, the commentariat was apparently still oblivious. Until Monday´s inaugural address, that is. Where has everyone been these four years? The only surprise is that Obama chose his second inaugural, generally an occasion for "malice toward none" ecumenism, to unveil so uncompromising a left-liberal manifesto. But the substance was no surprise. After all, Obama had unveiled his transformational agenda in his very first address to Congress, four years ago. It was, I wrote at the time,

WASHINGTON — California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein staged a dramatic press conference Thursday on Capitol Hill with 10 weapons at her side and unveiled legislation instituting a government ban on more than 150 types of firearms, including rifles, pistols and shotguns. Flanked by other anti-gun liberal lawmakers, including New York Sen. Chuck Schumer and Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, Feinstein announced the introduction of the “Assault Weapons Ban of 2013.” The legislation being pushed by Feinstein — who has long history of calling for gun bans — would prohibit the sale, transfer, importation and manufacture of certain firearms.

A few thoughts on filibuster reform: 1. The reason there wasn’t root-and-branch reform of the filibuster is that most Senate Democrats didn’t want root-and-branch reform of the filibuster. (Snip) The reason it doesn’t is that time is precious. The talking filibuster had many virtues, but at its core, it got the causality of the problem backwards. The reason the minority doesn’t burn time on the Senate floor talking isn’t because they don’t want to. It’s because the majority doesn’t want them to. 3. The reform idea that held the most promise was the “41-vote rule.” Right now, breaking a filibuster requires the majority

New York has yet to receive an estimated $30 billion from Washington for Hurricane Sandy relief, but Governor Andrew Cuomo already knows one way he plans to spend it. New York will help them rebuild a better house — on stilts, for example, higher than future floodwaters.
