Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday lashed out over the claim that the administration misled Americans about the nature of the Libya terror attack by asserting that it was the result of a protest, raising her voice during a Senate hearing and asking: "What difference, at this point, does it make?" Clinton, in what may be her final set of testimony as secretary, pointedly challenged Republican Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson when he claimed the department could have "easily" determined what happened that night by interviewing staffers who were evacuated.

WASHINGTON – The House voted Wednesday for a short-term debt ceiling fix that would extend the country’s borrowing authority until May – while also applying a controversial provision that would suspend lawmakers’ pay if they don’t pass a budget by April. The bill passed on a 285-144 vote. The measure, if approved by the Senate, would buy lawmakers some breathing room to hammer out details for a more permanent solution. The White House said it would sign the bill if it cleared Congress. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid indicated his

Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) marked the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide, by announcing at a press conference her reintroduction of legislation to ban all abortion providers from receiving any federal funds, including Planned Parenthood. “Over the last 40 years, more than 55 million babies have been aborted,” Black said on Tuesday on Capitol Hill at the conference focused on Roe v. Wade. “Last year alone, more than one million babies were aborted in the U.S.,” she said. “One fourth of the more than one million abortions last

Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) has introduced a bill to repeal the "Gun-Free School Zones Act" of 1990 (updated in 1995) on the grounds that mass shootings at schools have increased five-fold since its passage. The "Safe Schools Act of 2013" (H.R.35), co-sponsored by Rep Broun, Paul C. [GA-10] notes that the 1990 "gun-free" law has made schools unsafe because "shooters now know that they can victimize American school campuses with no fear that victims will be armed." Stockman´s bill notes that there have been 10 school shootings killing at least four people each in the 22 years

American Prospect editor Harold Meyerson writes in today’s Washington Post: “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change we seek,” candidate Barack Obama said in 2008. At the time, his comments came in for criticism: They were narcissistic; they were tautological; they didn’t make a whole lot of sense. But in the aftermath of Obama’s 2012 reelection and his second inaugural address, his 2008 remarks seem less a statement of self-absorption than one of prophecy. There is an Obama majority in American politics, symbolized by Monday’s throng on the Mall, whose existence

The family of Junior Seau has sued the NFL, claiming the former linebacker´s suicide was the result of brain disease caused by violent hits he sustained while playing football. The wrongful death lawsuit, filed Wednesday in California Superior Court in San Diego, blames the NFL for its "acts or omissions" that hid the dangers of repetitive blows to the head. It says Seau developed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from those hits, and accuses the NFL of deliberately ignoring and concealing evidence of the risks associated with traumatic brain injuries.

John Mackey, the feisty CEO of Whole Foods, says Obamacare is “fascist economics” and he regrets having said it, even though he insists — correctly — that it’s a textbook case of Mussolini-style corporate statism. Private property continues to exist, but the state controls all business. That’s why the fascists called their totalitarian system a “third way” between unbridled capitalism and Soviet-style Communism. Back in the twenties and early thirties, before German National Socialism became the archetypal “fascist” doctrine, Mussolini’s call for a new kind of national economy intrigued many serious thinkers and leaders, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Hillary Clinton suggested in the Senate hearing today that lack of access to funds may have contributed to security deficiencies in Libya — a claim that then-State Department official Charlene Lamb explicitly rejected in a November congressional hearing. “With respect to helping the Libyans …we will provide a list of everything we were doing and were attempting to do,” Clinton said, “but I will also tell you that since March 2011, Congressional holds have been placed on programs for many months for aid to Libya. We’ve had frequent Congressional

WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. Rand Paul said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had been negligent in conducting her job, and said that if he were president, he would have relieved her of her post. Paul said that the fact that she was not aware of the requests of more security for the U.S. Embassy in Libya constituted “a failure of leadership” and said it was “inexcusable.” “I think ultimately…you accept the culpability for the worst tragedy since 9/11,” Paul said. “Had I been president at the time and I had found

Wrapping up a report on Wednesday´s NBC Today about Secretary of State Hillary Clinton´s upcoming congressional testimony on the Benghazi terrorist attack, chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell sympathetically observed: "It will be a grueling day, first in the Senate, then in the House. Not how the Secretary of State had planned to wind up what is widely viewed as a stellar term as the nation´s top diplomat." HARRISBURG — Several hundred gun owners took a stand on the Capitol steps in freezing weather Wednesday to “show those liberal gun grabbers your rights are important,” Rep. Daryl Metcalfe said. Those rights are so important to gun owners that Metlcalfe, R-Butler County, filed legislation to make it a felony for any state official to enforce federal gun control laws. (Snip) Metcalfe stirred the crowd by asking who has questioned Second Amendment rights and then ticking off several names: President Obama, Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, and CNN‘s Piers Morgan.

The Republican National Committee has launched a new website with hopes of engaging activists to help "analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the 2012 election cycle efforts of the RNC" and "is reaching out to hundreds of individuals including RNC Members, grassroots activists, donors, elected officials, community leaders and other important partners to help the Republican Party form a solid path going forward." The RNC believes in order to to properly prepare for 2016, as rumblings of who the GOP candidates will be have already started, activists must be engaged in the conversation about improvement.

Ever since the Sandy Hook shootings, we´ve been hearing that now, at last, it´s time for the National Rifle Association to drop its "extremist" views and accept the sort of gun control that Democrats — and their allies in the press — were pushing long before Sandy Hook. When NRA Executive Vice President Wayne La Pierre proposed armed guards in schools, it was portrayed as evidence of how out-of-touch the organization was. (Snip) But, then again, it turned out that 55% of Americans supported the NRA proposal. Turns out, it was the people calling it crazy —

New York — Union membership is continuing to shrink throughout the country, even as companies add jobs in one-time union strongholds such as Michigan. Union membership fell to 11.3% of wage and salary workers last year, down from 11.8% the year before, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said today. In 1981, 20.1% of wage and salary workers were unionized. The latest numbers, while not a surprise, are the result of both political maneuvering and corporate negotiations. Both Michigan and Indiana became right-to-work states over the last year, meaning unions cannot require members to pay dues as a condition of employment.

At a government panel to discuss social security reforms, the former prime minister called the elderly who are unable to feed themselves “tube people,” then proceeded to say the elderly should be allowed to “hurry up and die” to reduce the burden on a country tasked to pay for their medical expenses.

I have seen more powerful men than Barack Obama fall. I worked in South Africa during Thabo Mbeki’s presidency, when the ruling African National Congress (ANC) won 70% of the vote and earned the power to change his country’s constitution unilaterally. In 2005, I watched from the gallery as he told Parliament he was dismissing his deputy, Jacob Zuma, over allegations of corruption stemming from a lucrative arms deal. Two years later, Mbeki was ousted by his party and forced to resign his presidency of the country.

If Bobby Jindal has his way, Louisiana’s personal and corporate income taxes are headed for extinction. Jindal wants the tax reform to be “revenue neutral,” and he’s exploring by how much he would have to increase the sales tax (currently 4 percent) in order to achieve that. He’s also meeting with state legislators. Louisiana’s session doesn’t start until April 8, and Jindal’s office intends by then to release a detailed plan, filling in the broad outlines that have been put forward so far.
