Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday defended the administration´s response the night of the September 2012 terror attack in Libya, testifying before Congress that there were "no delays in decision-making" despite accounts to the contrary. The secretary, after missing prior hearings due to illness, testified on the attack for the first time Wednesday morning before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. She said she has "no higher priority" than the security of her department´s staff, and that she is committed to making the department "safer, stronger and more secure." "As I have said many times,

The majority of territory outside Tripoli has fallen under the control of armed militias that have refused to disarm. Violent campaigns along tribal and ideological lines have been waged by Libyans determined to settle old scores and influence the ongoing political transition. Libya´s armed Islamists are well positioned to shape the course of events.

Taking a break from his exasperated criticism, Morning Joe‘s own Joe Scarborough commended Republicans on Wednesday for their “shrewd” move: their plan to raise the debt limit short term. Feeling more optimistic, Scarborough expressed “hope.” Republicans are “being smart” by proposing a temporary extension, he said. “It’s one of the first shrewd moves I’ve seen the body do in quite some time.” Scarborough went on to add that when he and co-host Mika Brzezinski paid a visit to Capitol Hill, “Republicans I spoke with gave me hope.”

Made in USA makes comeback

It´s becoming downright American to make stuff in America. Small manufacturers, craftsmen and retailers are marketing the Made-in-USA tag to score do-gooder points with consumers for employing stateside, says Margarita Mendoza, founder of the Made in America Movement, a lobbying organization for small manufacturers. It´s working: Over 80% of Americans are willing to pay more for Made-in-USA products, 93% of whom say it´s because they want to keep jobs in the USA, according to a survey released in November by Boston Consulting Group. In ultra-partisan times, it´s one of the few issues both Democrats and Republicans agree

In the wake of Beyonce’s “Star Spangled Banner” lip-sync scandal, the opening acts on the bill at President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony went into overdrive to reassure fans that they did in fact sing their songs live on Monday. Former “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” ahead of Beyonce, and her rep was quick to announce: “Kelly did sing live!” Folk legend James Taylor, the day’s first musical guest, sang “America the Beautiful,” and also chose not to mouth over a backing track

Now that Jill Kelley has broken her silence in a Daily Beast interview, the question naturally arises whether David Petraeus’s former mistress might do the same. People familiar with her thinking tell me the answer is yes. Broadwell plans to answer questions about the Petraeus mess in a limited way, they say, as a way of putting the sordid controversy behind her. The goal for the foreseeable future, they say, is for Broadwell to be able to step back into the public square and resume her career.

National Rifle Association (NRA) CEO Wayne LaPierre on Tuesday offered a sharp critique of President Obama’s second inaugural address, warning that his agenda threatened to make a “mockery” of the nation’s constitutional freedoms. In a speech in Reno, Nev., which the nation’s most-prominent gun rights lobby billed as a “major response” to the president’s address, LaPierre pressed his attack on Obama’s push for stricter gun laws in the aftermath of last month’s deadly Newtown, Conn. mass shooting.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Opponents of the city´s limit on the size of sugary drinks are raising questions of racial fairness alongside other complaints as the novel restriction faces a court test. The NAACP´s New York state branch and the Hispanic Federation have joined beverage makers and sellers in trying to stop the rule from taking effect March 12. With a hearing set Wednesday, critics are attacking what they call an inconsistent and undemocratic regulation, while city officials and health experts defend it as a pioneering and proper move to fight obesity. Now, after the 47-year-old Californian allegedly climbed 40 feet up a tree near the Capitol reflecting pool and tried to shout down President Obama’s inaugural address on Monday, a judge has ordered him to stay away not only from Capitol building but from the District entirely.Grogan, an antiabortion activist, eluded capture for five hours on Monday. A day after President Obama vowed an aggressive global war on global warming, Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman delivered a political hot potato to the White House in the form of state approval of a re-routed Keystone XL pipeline. Given the pressing domestic need for a) more reliable sources of oil and b) thousands of long-delayed, good-paying jobs, you might think federal approval of the endeavor with our closest neighbor and best friend is a gimme. Ah, but we are just three days past the middle of the 2,922-day Obama era.

“The first fundamental responsibility of any elected official is to pass a budget,” House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told reporters on Capitol Hill Tuesday evening. The Republican-led House has done so. But “what’s the history of the Senate?” McCarthy asked. “The last time they passed a budget, the iPad hadn’t even been introduced.” The Democrat-led Senate last passed a budget on April 29, 2009. Apple’s iPad was not made available to Americans until a year later, in April 2010. McCarthy noted that when Republicans gained a majority in the House after the 2010 midterms

Let no one accuse President Obama of a lack of vision. In broad strokes, the president’s inaugural speech painted a picture of a modern progressive state, technocratic and competent, muscular in its efforts and far-reaching in scope, capable of intricate micromanagement when necessary but also willing to take big steps to fix the big problems that liberals deem in need of fixing, whatever they may be. Obama defended the entitlement system, talked up the value of public infrastructure and environmental action, and explicitly tied the nation’s greatness to its ability and willingness to undertake whatever grand—and presumably public—reform

The HIV virus which causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) does not kill people directly. It destroys their immune systems, allowing a waiting disease that would otherwise be fought off by the body to kill them. The American political left, despite efforts since Woodrow Wilson called our Constitution “political witchcraft,” has not been able to directly inject a fatal disease (or at least not a rapidly fatal one) into our political system. So they are turning to destroying the national immune system by encouraging Americans to abandon belief in our Founding documents and principles.

The President did not present to the nation any agenda in his Inaugural Address. There were only a few code words, with double, even multiple, meanings. That is the fundamental

Sloane Stephens stunned childhood idol Serena Williams to reach the Australian Open semi-finals. But Williams failed to put on her best show on the court, both because of injury, and a temper tantrum that saw her slam her racket into the ground with considerable force. The battered racket was then sent flying into the bench with some pace, and Williams was given a code violation. Williams´ chances were seriously hindered by a back injury suffered midway through the second set but credit Stephens, who kept her nerve to complete a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win. Stephens had a picture

O say can’t she sing? Beyoncé’s dazzling rendition of the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration was a total fake — with the megastar lip-syncing as the Marine Corps Band merely pretended to play its instruments, sources said yesterday. The Grammy-award winner’s decision to use a taped version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” stunned the first family, which handpicked her for the occasion. “Oh, my God! You’re best friends with Michelle and you faked it! I am very upset,” said a source close to the Obamas. “I would like my three minutes back.” Beyoncé’s performance was a well-choreographed acting job.

The legislation is also expected to require gun owners to register semi-automatic rifles categorized as “assault weapons” with the Federal Government under the National Firearms Act – which may require assault rifle owners to pay a $200 registering fee and submit photographs and fingerprints to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

I think it would be a serious mistake to ignore or underestimate the significance of President Obama’s second inaugural address. It speaks to his ambition, his assault on the founding principles, and his attempt to realign the electorate on a misreading or misinterpretation or misrepresentation of the meaning of the founding principles. Attention must be paid. See, e.g., Yuval Levin’s “Obama’s second inaugural.” As R.J. Pestritto has demonstrated, the intellectual roots of modern American liberalism lie in an assault on the ideas of natural rights and limited government. They eventuate in an administrative state

There’s been a near consensus that one of the takeaways from President Obama’s second inaugural speech on Monday was that it was unabashedly liberal. “This was Barack Obama without apology—a liberal emboldened by political victory and a desire to enter the history books with a progressive agenda,” enthused New Yorker editor and biographer David Remnick. In reality, the speech wasn’t all that surprising – from the time Obama first burst onto the national political scene at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, he has tried to wrap big government liberalism in American tradition. But if we’re assuming Obama

Joe Biden in 2016? The inauguration is barely over but the vice president already is dropping plenty of hints that he might have another political act. Biden packed his schedule with events and receptions attended by party stalwarts throughout the long weekend of inauguration festivities, stoking speculation he may be laying the groundwork to carry the torch from President Barack Obama. It comes after Biden played a prominent role in brokering a compromise on the fiscal cliff standoff with Congress and his work developing gun violence legislation following December´s deadly school shooting in Connecticut.
