President Obama told congressional leaders at his inaugural luncheon Monday that the "irony" of being president was the humility that came with attempting to implement an agenda. "I know that former President Carter, President Clinton, they understand the irony of the presidential office, which is the longer you´re there, the more humble you become, and the more mindful you are that is beyond your powers individually to move this great country," Obama said. The president acknowledged the "profound differences" within the room, which contained the Supreme Court, Cabinet officials and leadership from the House and Senate.

An inaugural official told reporters that "at least" 1 million people were on the National Mall for President Obama´s swearing-in ceremony. If the figure is accurate, a crowd of around 1 million would put attendance at about 55 percent of the 2009 crowd. The city of Washington, D.C., estimated that 1.8 million people packed the Mall last time to watch Obama get sworn in for his first term. Washington, D.C.´s, Metro system reported that ridership was about 63 percent of 2009´s record-shattering Inauguration Day.

Dish Network Corp., which owns the Blockbuster chain of video rental stores, plans to close an additional 300 locations over the next few weeks on top of hundreds closed previously, according to a news report Monday. (Snip) Blockbuster had some 1,700 stores open when Dish acquired it out of bankruptcy in April 2011 in a deal worth about $320 million; the chain years ago had as many as 9,100 stores before it was battered by the wide availability of movies from Netflix, Amazon.com and others through digital, online and mail-order channels. Dish closed about 500 unprofitable Blockbuster

George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, even Oprah Winfrey—the famous people who didn´t attend Barack Obama´s second inauguration say as much about the ceremony as those who did turn up. The no-shows offered many different excuses for staying home—some legitimate, some paper-thin. And some of these no-shows hurt more than others. As Washington´s presidential party carries on into the afternoon, let´s take a look at the people who aren´t celebrating Obama´s second term in D.C., assessing their alibis and the severity of their snubs. President Obama’s inaugural address was eloquent and moving in parts. It was also deeply partisan and polarizing, something that is unusual for a day normally devoted to unity and common purpose. But not in Barack Obama’s America. In his inaugural speech he did what he seemingly cannot keep himself from doing: portraying himself and his followers as Children of Light and portraying his opponents as Children of Darkness. You are either with Obama–or you are with the forces of cruelty and bigotry. In Obama’s world, there is no middle ground. He is the Voice of Reason

The world will little note nor long remember anything President Barack Obama said in his second inaugural address; still less will it remember any of the gushing encomiums his admirers in the press reliably produce, comparing him variously to Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln and Jesus. Obama said that developing “sustainable-energy sources” is “what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared.” Does anyone believe that in a week anyone will find that an arresting and compelling thought? Or credit it for being a thought at all? The president presented the familiar progressive story

Former President Bill Clinton and his wife Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were warmly welcomed when they walked on to the platform for President Obama’s inauguration. Their entrance may be more than just a show, however, as it could turn into a practice run for Hillary should she run for office in 2016. In addition to renewing the widely-reported speculation that she is the most likely Democratic presidential candidate after Mr Obama finishes his second term, it was also only her second public appearance since her health scare. Mrs Clinton released pictures when she went back to work

Gunfire erupted from a vehicle, wounding five people, about 30 minutes after a parade honoring Martin Luther King Jr. passed a New Orleans intersection, police said. The parade was one of numerous events nationwide honoring the slain civil rights leader, perhaps the most famous modern advocate of peaceful civil disobedience, on the federal holiday created for him. “It´s the state of affairs in our nation that young men do not heed the words of Martin Luther King Jr.,” New Orleans Police Supt. Ronal Serpas, one of the responding officers, told the website nola.com.

Michelle Obama was clearly not impressed by House Speaker John Boehner at the inaugural luncheon on Monday, as a camera caught her twice rolling her eyes at the congressman as he tried to engage her in conversation. Mr Boehner, the Republican leader of the House of Representatives, was seated to Mrs Obama´s left and President Obama was on her right as they dined. Boehner made a remark to the First Couple and tapped Mrs Obama´s arm, as if to engage her, but she refused to make eye contact with him, according to a video recording

President Obama has become a master at the trick of couching progressive prescriptions in the language of the traditional American creed — thus effecting a deliberate inversion of that creed’s actual meaning. That’s exactly what he did with his second inaugural address, using the language of the American Founding to promote collectivism in almost all areas of life. The hinge came in a single clause which sounded oh-so-reasonable and inarguable, but which instead was a non sequitur in terms of its logic and a bastardization of the principles of that creed. “Preserving our individual freedoms,” he said,

Someone needs to inform the jihadists. On a day when we are still counting the bodies – including the American bodies — from the deadly terror attack in Algeria, this statement from President Obama’s inaugural address was particularly jarring. Algeria is hardly the only flashpoint. Our conflict with jihadists not only continues but will continue long after we’ve left Afghanistan. The perpetrators of the Benghazi attack are still at large, France is engaging in offensive military operations against al-Qaeda in Mali (with American logistical support)

Malia´s dancing and Sasha´s yawn may have been the highlights from the first daughters at today´s inauguration ceremonies, former first daughter Jenna Bush Hager remembers crying when her father was sworn into office for the first time. ´I remember crying, being in tears just because this is something he´d worked for for so long,´ she said during an appearance on The Today Show. Jenna and her twin sister Barbara are likely the children who have attended the most inauguration ceremonies because they first experienced the spectacle when their grandfather was took the oath in 1989.

A woman was in the ranks of the elite squad of Secret Service agents guarding President Obama’s vehicle this afternoon in the motorcade that passed down Pennsylvania Avenue. The young woman, with her blonde hair slicked back into a ponytail, stood on the left side of Mr Obama’s Cadillac, walking in stride with the other agents. The cavalcade slowly made it was way from Capitol Hill to the White House, with Mr Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama exiting at one point, waving to the hundreds of thousands of people along the mall.

Two-and-a-half weeks ago I wrote a post urging Republicans to back away from a confrontation with President Obama over raising the debt ceiling and warning them against engaging in high-profile confrontations and brinksmanship except on the most favorable terrain. I was therefore quite relieved when Republicans announced that this week they will propose extending the federal debt limit by three months while also requiring that both the House and the Senate pass a budget for the next fiscal year. If either chamber failed to adopt a budget by April 15, that chamber’s members would then have their congressional pay withheld.

The president may have called for a higher level of discourse in his remarks today, but it appears that some in the crowd didn’t get the message. As Congressman Paul Ryan appeared on the steps of the Capitol, the crowd booed. That was the result, it appears, of the antics of Department of Justice lawyer Dan Freeman, who broadcast the message below on Facebook shortly thereafter: Asked over the weekend whether he’d be attending today’s Inauguration festivities, Ryan told USA Today, “Yes, it’s my obligation.”

President Barack Obama´s communications director, Dan Pfeiffer, says that our political system isn´t "worthy" of Obama and the opportunity the president presents. He made the remarks the Washington Post. “There’s a moment of opportunity now that’s important,” Pfeiffer tells the paper. “What’s frustrating is that we don’t have a political system or an opposition party worthy of the opportunity.” The issue is that if President Obama wants to get things done, he´ll have to work with the uncompromising Republicans."If he is successful, his record could include a variety of legislative achievements

President Obama’s Inaugural Address was well delivered and, as we have come to expect from him, quite eloquent. It had the usual obeisance to the traditions of American democracy and the virtue of relative brevity. Yet there was nothing in it that showed that he had learned a thing in the four years since he first took the oath of office. The address was a clarion call for the country to get behind the liberal agenda he supports. Fair enough. But, like much of what has come from the White House since November, it illustrated

The only voice that really soared at midday was Beyonce’s, while singing the national anthem. President Barack Obama’s second inaugural address, by contrast, was flat, partisan and surprisingly pedestrian—more a laundry list of preferred political programs than a vision for a divided America and disoriented world. Congressional Republicans are acting as if the 2012 campaign is continuing, so perhaps it isn’t surprising that the president followed suit. He gave a progressive speech that Democrats will like;

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama never mentioned the words Democrat or Republican, yet his second inaugural address was a decidedly political speech. The president was careful not to make his remarks overtly partisan, but he had a message for Republicans: Compromise and embrace government as part of the solution. Obama, emboldened by his re-election with ultimately comfortable margins, laid out a progressive agenda. He stood up for spending on entitlement programs, promoted immigration reform, gay marriage, tax reform and voter identification laws, and unexpectedly gave one of his most impassioned calls for climate change — an issue that

President Barack Obama´s second inaugural address has been described as one of the most partisan ever given, heralding a sweeping left-wing agenda and demonizing his opponents. But President Obama´s target is not simply the Republican Party: it is the Constitution itself, and the values of liberty that it enshrines. In the address itself, President Obama made the case that liberty is not timeless; that it must adjust to the times, and that "preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action"--not to defend those freedoms from infringement, but to

BuzzFeed‘s Ben Smith is just one of many journalists ready to canonize President Obama as one of the greatest presidents today despite the fact that Obama hasn’t even completed a single week of his second term. Smith writes: Now we are in Reagan territory, and in the hall of statues in the American imagination that includes, this century, probably only FDR and maybe JFK and Teddy besides. Obama’s best interpreter, Andrew Sullivan, made that case last fall: “If Obama wins, to put it bluntly, he will become the Democrats’ Reagan. The narrative writes itself.

Today in his second inaugural address, President Obama became the progressive leader that many liberals thought they were getting when they voted him into office four years ago. Couched in rhetoric about the need to come together as a country was a strong — and surprisingly pointed — invocation of a laundry list of progressive principles: gay rights, voting rights, climate change and the inherent value of entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security.
