The ceremonial lunch President Obama and his former congressional colleagues are eating Monday tops out at 3,000 calories, according to a website that has tallied up the luxurious menu of lobster, bison and apple pie. HealthyFoodRecipe.net posted the full menu, complete with its calorie count, and said it was “unsatisfactory” to see such an unhealthy spread, given first lady Michelle Obama’s push for healthier eating. She has come under fire for the high-calorie counts of some of the state dinners she’s hosted at the White House, but other nutritionists have given her a pass,

Though the public inauguration ceremony takes place Monday, President Barack Obama’s new term began Sunday, with his official swearing-in held in the White House’s Blue Room. Many of us hope his second term will be better than his first. To understand why, consider his record so far. Fewer Americas are working today than when Mr. Obama took the oath of office four years ago. The unemployment rate is higher. He’s the first president to preside over a decline in median household income during a recovery. Nearly half as many more people receive food stamps than when

Barack Obama is perhaps the only modern president who has had the burden of swatting away comparisons between his own soaring rhetoric and that of our 16th president. You may recall that, in the wake of the Newtown massacre, Pulitzer-prize winning reporter David Maraniss gushed over the president’s remarks, writing, “People will long remember what Barack Obama said in Newtown,” and calling the speech “[Obama´s] Gettysburg address.” Today, thanks to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, it took less than five minutes for the comparison to be drawn between President Obama’s 2nd Inaugural address

Anna Wintour, Vogue editor, has withdrawn her name from the cadre of hopefuls pining for ambassadorships. Over 300 ambassador wannabees are being considered for roughly 30 openings, but Wintour, who had hotly desired the ambassadorship to Great Britain, found out that her multiyear contract with the publisher of Vogue, Conde Nast, would penalize her financially if she left her job before her contract was up. Wintour was a major fundraiser for Obama in 2012, but once it leaked out that Obama’s top fundraiser, Matthew Barzun, would get the British post, Wintour withdrew her name

A Gallup poll released on the morning of Barack Obama’s second public presidential inauguration shows that his first term was marked by a level of public disapproval exceeded in the modern era only by Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. Obama “averaged 49.1% job approval during his first term in office, among the lowest for post-World War II presidents,” Gallup said Monday. “Obama’s first-term average is most similar to Bill Clinton’s. Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy, and Dwight Eisenhower were the most popular first-term presidents.”

According to Tom Ricks at Foreign Policy, the Obama administration is pushing out celebrated Marine General Mattis from CENTCOM early because of internal battles over the White House’s Middle East strategy: Why the hurry? Pentagon insiders say that he rubbed civilian officials the wrong way — not because he went all “mad dog,” which is his public image, and the view at the White House, but rather because he pushed the civilians so hard on considering the second- and third-order consequences of military action against Iran. Some of those questions apparently were uncomfortable.

Self-described Republican and former Secretary of State Colin Powell marked the second swearing-in of President Obama Monday with more harsh words for his fellow party members, during separate appearances on MSNBC and ABC. To Joe Scarborough on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” report, Mr. Powell criticized the GOP’s immigration platform, and questioned why the party has shifted so far right. “The Republican Party should be a party that says, ‘We want everybody to vote,’ and make it easier to vote and give them a reason to vote for the party,” he said, according to Politico. “The [GOP] has shifted dramatically

Sounding the same themes of class warfare that propelled his re-election campaign, President Barack Obama devoted his second inaugural address to laying out his second term agenda: a struggle to undo the seeming injustices of America´s past, and to overcome the army of straw men that stand in opposition to progress. In the process, President Obama attempted nothing less than an assault on the timeless notion of liberty itself: Through it all, we have never relinquished our skepticism of central authority, nor have we succumbed to the fiction that all society´s ills can be cured through government alone.

Talking about whether the Republican party needs to broaden its appeal among minorities, former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice urged Republicans to pay more attention to immigration reform. “The Republican party certainly has to stop turning off large segments of the population,” Rice said on Face the Nation to laughter. “It’s not a strategy to keep hoping that parts of the population don’t turn out. You’ve got to simply broaden.” Immigration, Rice added, was the “big issue.”

Barack Obama made clear in his Second Inaugural Address that responding to "climate change" will be a priority in the president´s second term. "We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity," Obama declared. "We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms."

GOP Senator Ted Cruz slammed President Obama‘s gun control proposals on NBC’s Meet The Press Sunday and said he didn’t think it was constructive for the president to try to “exploit” the Newtown tragedy “within minutes” of it occurring. Cruz said the “gun control agenda” backed by Obama is “designed to appeal to partisans.” Cruz explained why he didn’t believe any of the gun control measures outlined by Obama last week would work: “Number one, it would have done zero to prevent the crime in Newtown. Number two, many of the provisions are contrary to

TIME Magazine reporter Jon Meacham joined MSNBC host Chris Matthews on Monday for President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Both Meacham and Matthews compared Obama to President Ronald Reagan and asked if he can achieve a lasting legacy in his second term through compromise with his opponents. Meacham said that he thought so because, like Reagan whose formative experience in life came from being a labor organizer and an actor, Obama’s background is that of a college professor. Professors, Meacham said, are able to ‘think in more complex terms’ and ‘reach more nuanced positions.’

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd spoke in such illustrious language about the "brilliant" president and his "super-brain" that she even bowled over Obama fan Mika Brzezinski who exclaimed: "Now that´s love!" Appearing on the Monday edition of MSNBC´s Morning Joe, Dowd predicted that "five years from now" the Morning Joe crew will be gushing about Obama´s "brilliant political memoir" but then lamented that they would look back and ask: "Why couldn´t he have applied that super-brain to Washington and gotten it to work better?" A Richmond-area lawmaker brandished an AK-47 on the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates on Thursday in a wild stunt aimed at rallying support for tougher gun laws. Del. Joe Morrissey, D-Highland Springs, pulled the weapon out shortly after the day´s session got underway, a time when legislators typically welcome school groups and other visitors in the chamber´s gallery. Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Woodstock, interrupted Morrissey´s speech to ask him to take his finger out of the trigger guard and later said that taking guns from citizens is what led to the Holocaust and mass killings under the Soviet Gulag.

Have we, as a nation, reached the point at which we judge our leaders not “by the color of their skin but by the content of their character,” in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous words? We would wish it to be so, but judging from Juan Williams’s recent essay in the Wall Street Journal, we are not there yet. Williams, himself a victim of false accusations of prejudice, recycles the old charge that critics of President Barack Obama are racist. Williams is careful not to put the point quite so bluntly.

Today´s fake taking of the oath of office by President Obama is the perfect metaphor for the Potemkin nature of his political movement. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with VIN ending in #0001 has sold at auction for an incredible $1.1 million, more than 20 times the expected cost of the latest ‘Vette. Of course, getting to own the very first example to be sold to the public has its premium, and all proceeds from the sale will be going to benefit the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Nevertheless, the amount paid is still staggering. The final bidder at the Barrett-Jackson auction held yesterday in Scottsdale, Arizona, was NASCAR team owner and avid Corvette collector Rick Hendrick.
