Georgetown see-and-be-seen staple Café Milano became a virtual game of who’s who of Washington on Sunday. Celebrities, D.C. power players, lawmakers, and journalists packed the eatery to capacity for an inaugural bipartisan brunch hosted by Tina Brown, The Daily Beast and Newsweek. “Desperate Housewives” actress and President Obama fundraiser Eva Longoria donned a bipartisan color for the occasion, wearing a fitted purple dress and dark purple heels. Longoria made the rounds at the gathering, greeting former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright with a smile and handshake, saying, “Madam Secretary, so nice to meet you.” The entertainer shrieked, “Grover!” upon eyeing

All eyes will be on President Obama at noon tomorrow when he makes his public inauguration address but come the evening the world´s attention will inevitably turn to the First Lady and the gown she has chosen to wear to the couple´s second inauguration ball. Though Michelle Obama certainly has the knack for getting it right in the fashion stakes, she may want to cast her eye over some of the inauguration dresses chosen by First Ladies gone by. The Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington D.C. has a collection of the First Ladies choices going back 100 years,

Cheers to Blue Monday, ´the

As if any Monday in January weren´t bad enough, Blue Monday, an ill-reputed date dubbed "the most depressing day of the year," should really put you in a mood. While there has been some confusion over exactly which day Blue Monday falls on in 2013, the official date is January 21. The theory of Blue Monday dates back to 2005, when UK psychologist Cliff Arnall created an elaborate mathematical formula to calculate the most miserable day of the year. Thanks to the day´s perfect storm of drab weather, holiday bills, and wrecked New Year´s resolutions, motivational levels

Four years ago, ABC´s Bill Weir gushed during coverage of Barack Obama´s first inauguration, "Even the seagulls must have been awed by the blanket of humanity.” On Sunday, Diane Sawyer said of Washington, D.C., on Inauguration Eve, "The whole city has a smile on its face" (video follows with transcript and commentary):DIANE SAWYER: And as we´ve said here in Washington, the excitement is already beginning. Those marching bands getting ready for their parade, the caterers, 10,000 eggs for one hotel, and the whole city has a smile on its face, the pageantry, the ceremony,

OKLAHOMA CITY — While President Obama is calling for further restrictions on access to guns, Oklahoma lawmakers are pushing in the other direction, introducing dozens of bills that would make it easier for people to carry firearms and to carry them into government meetings, state parks and even public schools. More than two dozen bills were filed in the Senate to expand gun rights before Thursday´s bill filing deadline, and nearly that many were prepared in the House. The 2013 session opens Feb. 4. "Clearly in Oklahoma we are strong supporters of gun rights and gun ownership rights

In his illuminating new e-book on covering the Obama re-election campaign, Buzzfeed reporter Michael Hastings reveals that President Obama secretly joined reporters for drinks once while the campaign was in Orlando, Fla. The "beer summit" with supporters is described by Hastings as little like teenage fans meeting Justin Bieber during his North American tour: “The behavior of the assembled press corps was telling. Everyone, myself included, swooned. Swooned! Head over heels. One or two might have even lost their minds. We were all, on some level, deeply obsessed with Obama, crushing hard,

Jack Harbaugh played one year of professional football, with the AFL’s New York Titans in 1961. He began a long career as a high school and college coach in 1964. But Jack Harbaugh’s lasting impact on the game of football will be the fact that he had two sons in the two years between ending his playing career and beginning his coaching career. On Super Bowl Sunday, John Harbaugh (born in 1962) will coach his Ravens against Jim Harbaugh (born in 1963) and the 49ers. Jack Harbaugh surely had high hopes for his two sons half a century ago,

The win sets up the first Super Bowl coached by brothers, Baltimore´s John Harbaugh and San Francisco´s Jim. The 49ers won the NFC title earlier Sunday 28-24 at Atlanta. The 49ers have been listed as 5-point favorites. Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis´ final season will conclude in two weeks in New Orleans;

Frank Gore scored a pair of second-half touchdowns and San Francisco, after falling behind 17-0 by the first play of the second quarter, pulled off a record rally for a 28-24 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC championship game Sunday. Helped by the defense in the final minutes, Kaepernick didn’t put up the same dazzling numbers he did in the divisional playoff against Green Bay.

In 1972, when Mary Ellen Cunha and Peggy Forster threw open the doors and uncovered the windows at Twin Peaks Tavern on the corner of Castro and Market streets, they didn´t know they were making history. But four decades later, the bar that has sat both literally and figuratively at the center of San Francisco´s gay rights movement and community is now a historic landmark. Twin Peaks Tavern, which first opened in 1935 but was purchased by Cunha and Forster in 1971, is believed to be the first gay bar in the nation to feature full-length, open plate glass windows

Former Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) has spent a lot of time pressing for international reductions in nuclear arsenals. And since joining hands with the anti-nuclear weapons group Global Zero in 2009, Hagel has not only supported a nuclear weapons-free America, but has even advocated unilateral U.S disarmament, "if necessary." Hagel has also joined the board of directors for the Ploughshares Fund--a group which funds research into "nuclear disarmament and arms control." Because Hagel aspires to the role of Sec. of Defense, these efforts toward nuclear disarmament are problematic, to say the least. Especially when one considers that now

interesting little factoid has emerged from a new Fox News poll of U.S. voters: Personal sentiments are strong and defiant among many U.S. gun owners. Question 46 in the wide-ranging survey of more than 1,000 registered voters asks if there is a gun in the household. Overall, 52 percent of the respondents said yes, someone in their home owned a gun. That number included 65 percent of Republicans, 59 percent of conservatives, 38 percent of Democrats and 41 percent of liberals. But on to Question 47, addressed to those with a gun in their home:

In comments made Friday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the National Rifle Association (NRA) is a "fringe group" that is "very extreme." Moreover, according to Schumer, the NRA doesn´t "represent average gun [owners]." Schumer says that during the 1990s the NRA used their lobbying power to fill background checks with loopholes, thus leading to a situation where "40 percent of all guns sold in American have no [background] check." You´ll recall that Obama also used this "40 percent" claim when pushing for more gun control earlier in the week.

As part of President Barack Obama’s 23-point gun control plan, he nominated Minnesota U.S. Attorney B. Todd Jones–who currently doubles right now as the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives–to be the ATF director. Jones was personally a part of the high-ranking Department of Justice unit that first met on October 26, 2009, to create the new DOJ policy that was used to justify “gunwalking” in Operation Fast and Furious. In Fast and Furious, the ATF “walked” roughly 2,000 firearms into the hands of the Mexican drug cartels.

We’re going to do a budget this year and it’s going to have revenues in it and our Republican colleagues better get used to that fact.” Senate Democrats have refused

What do these all have in common: The Ottoman Empire, the Nazi Empire, the Soviet Empire and the New Islamic Caliphate?If you are a student of history, you will recognize that the first three of these expansionist empires have all been the underlying or overt cause of millions of deaths, and that they were central players in three world conflicts. The fourth empire, which is the only one still extant, cannot yet be measured in terms of the damage it will eventually do, but it is the largest in both geography and population and it is still growing.

Today, just before taking his official inauguration oath, President Obama attended church, receiving the accolades of the media for doing so. Obama, of course, has a rather checkered history with religion; his old pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, used to deliver fiery anti-American, anti-Israel diatribes from the pulpit. At Obama’s first inauguration, Rev. Joseph Lowery gave his invocation by listing racial slurs and implying that white people were responsible for the world’s ills. Now Obama’s newest pastor, Rev. Ronald Braxton, is joining their prestigious company.
