Along with adding the finishing touches to his inaugural address on Monday, President Obama has plenty on his plate. He is consumed by the responsibilities of selecting new Cabinet members and preparing strategies to get them confirmed. He already had his fair share of critics, and the last thing he needs is a music critic telling him how to run the country. So I´m sorry to have to be the one to remind you, Mr. President, that you´ve left someone out. Secretary of Culture. It´s time. Despite a troubling international reduction of government support for the arts

WASHINGTON – The inauguration ceremony for President Obama’s second term will be held on Monday, but besides being sworn in on a platform on the West Front of the Capitol, he will participate in a whole range of events, from volunteering to ballroom dancing. Since the inauguration happens to fall on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the event will be preceded by the first family taking part in the National Day of Service on Saturday in recognition of the civil rights leader. The White House has called for those in Washington, D.C., and people nationwide to join the president

George Packer, writing in The New Yorker, warns that President Obama’s upcoming inaugural address may be “a bit of a snooze.” He says most inaugural addresses are. Obama “isn’t a phrasemaker,” because he is “too complex, too nuanced, too elusive, and too careful, for words that stick.” Packer doubts that even the “signature phrase” from Obama’s first inaugural address — “a new era of responsibility” — will “enter the ages.” About that, he is undoubtedly right. Packer notes, however, that Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR, JFK, Reagan, and Bush 43 all gave inaugural addresses Column name removed from headline by Staff.

On August 1, 2009--just seven months into President Barack Obama’s first term--former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin predicted Obama would attempt to leverage health care to "take away" the Second Amendment rights of Americans. In a speech to National Rifle Association members in Anchorage, Alaska, Palin said Americans should be “wary” of this “tie-in” because Obama would attempt to “take away our rights under the guise of some new health care plan”: And by the way, [with] health care being so big in D.C. right now, be wary when some kind of tie-in occurs. Because it will crop up:

Since winning reelection, President Obama has been aggressive, combative and supremely confident in his public appearances. Like many reelected Presidents, he enters his second term believing he has a personal mandate from the voters. Unlike many others in their second term, however, he seems focused not on achieving specific policy results, but in reshaping the American political landscape. He is set to use the next four years to make the Republican Party a toxic brand in many parts of the country. He has navigated the "fiscal cliff" negotiations and the coming debt debate without any actual

Paris—With French officials saying confidently on Saturday that an advance by Islamist militants on Bamako, Mali’s capital, had been halted, France’s foreign minister told African leaders that “our African friends need to take the lead” in a multilateral military intervention in Mali.(Snip) In Paris, French officials said the United States, while willing to help ferry African troops, wanted to bill France for the use of transport aircraft, which officials said would not go down well with the French. DETROIT — Federal prosecutors have filed a fraud charge against Michigan Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway, just a few days before she leaves the state´s highest court in a scandal involving the sale of a Detroit-area home and suspicious steps taken to conceal property in Florida. The charge was filed Friday as a criminal "information," which means it was negotiated and that a guilty plea is expected in federal court. Defense attorney Steve Fishman declined to comment Saturday. Hathaway is resigning Monday, months after a series of questionable real estate transactions

Sanaa, Yemen - Yemeni military officials say eight people have been killed in two suspected U.S. drone strikes in Abieda valley in central Marib province. Residents contacted by The Associated Press say that at least two of the eight people killed in Saturday evening’s strikes were known al-Qaida militants of Saudi nationality. They identified one as Ismail bin Jamil. They say at least three of the bodies were charred beyond recognition. Security officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media. Residents spoke anonymously for fear of reprisal.

DENVER — Thousands of protestors in nearly every state rallied in favor of gun rights Saturday in a mass demonstration aimed at pushing back at President Obama’s sweeping gun-control proposals. “Guns Across America,” billed as a grass roots, family-friendly event and advertised mainly on Facebook and other social-media sites, saw Second Amendment advocates gather at “high noon” in each participating state to send a message to federal and state lawmakers. “All I want is my Second Amendment rights. I’ve earned them,” said Don Dobyns, the Pueblo military veteran and ex-police officer who organized

FREMONT, Ohio — On the same day, in the same county of northern Ohio, two new grandparents prepared to drive to the same factory for work. They had started their careers at Arm & Hammer in the same year, and for more than two decades they had stood together on a concrete floor and watched baking soda roll down an 80-foot production line. But, on this morning, what they saw looked nothing alike. Bill Herr, 61, left a house that had declined in value by 20 percent, in a neighborhood blemished by foreclosures, in a town where he believed

Tim Murray may not have been the most electric candidate in the world, but his surprise exit has jolted the 2014 governor’s race, and possibly this year’s special Senate election. Without Murray in the race, that makes Treasurer Steve Grossman and Attorney General Martha Coakley the perceived front-runners in 2014, and that could be a real problem for Democrats. Who could now jump into the fray without a strong Democratic nominee running against Charlie Baker or former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown? Here’s one scenario: Joe Kennedy, the father. Sources say the former congressman may

LONDON — Defying global calls for restraint, the Algerian military staged a final assault Saturday against Islamist militants at an energy complex in the Sahara, culminating a four-day siege that left some two dozen hostages dead and spawned fears of a resurgent al-Qaeda in North Africa. Eleven kidnappers and seven hostages died in Saturday’s operation targeting the remaining militant stronghold at the vast facility run by London-based BP, Norway’s Statoil and Algeria’s state energy giant, according to Algeria’s state news service and France’s Agence France-Presse.

Maybe it was the dual bubble windshields, perfectly framing the heads of Adam West and Burt Ward as they raced to the Gotham City crime scene. Or maybe it was the flared bat wings, edged in orange. Or perhaps it was the ultimate jet exhaust, which flamed like a dragon as the caped crusaders raced out of the Bat Cave. Whatever the reasons, the original Batmobile remains one of the most revered cars in America. And now the Batmobile – yes the very same one used on the 1960s Adam West TV show – is among the more than 1,400 cars expected to be auctioned off at the the 42nd annual

The Obama administration is nearing completion of a detailed counterterrorism manual that is designed to establish clear rules for targeted-killing operations but leaves open a major exemption for the CIA’s campaign of drone strikes in Pakistan, U.S. officials said. The carve-out would allow the CIA to continue pounding al-Qaeda and Taliban targets for a year or more before the agency is forced to comply with more stringent rules spelled out in a classified document that officials have described as a counterterrorism

How much will all the inaugural events cost? It´s hard to say. While most events that occur in the capital have a hard-and-fast budget, the inauguration´s many moving parts, safety concerns and large geographic reach make it hard to quantify – especially before the main event. In 2009, ABC reported the total cost of Obama´s first inauguration was $170 million. While incumbent presidents historically spend less on a second inauguration, it´s unclear what the total bill will be this time around. Analysis of some of the known appropriations so far puts the total at $13.637 million, but

Vice President Biden was curt, avoiding confrontation when he sat down with the National Rifle Association and other gun rights advocates. He looked across the table in his ornate conference room and asked the NRA official if his group could back a ban on assault weapons. “No,” was James J. Baker’s reply. There was little discussion, no real debate over whether a 1990s ban had worked. The two men simply moved on. Biden, leading a task force to study gun violence, was certain of the course of action President Obama would end up taking, and Baker was just as certain

Washington - President Barack Obama said Saturday the U.S. stands ready to provide whatever assistance Algerian officials need in the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack at a natural gas complex in the Sahara. The four-day standoff appeared to end Saturday after Algerian special forces stormed the complex. The clash left at least 23 hostages dead and killed all 32 militants involved, the Algerian government said. In a statement from the White House, Obama said the blame lay with the militants and that the United States condemns their actions. "This attack is another reminder of the threat posed by

Some 600 attendees in Austin, Texas, carried signs bearing messages such as "An Armed Society is a Polite Society" and "The Second Amendment Comes from God." About 2,000 people — many carrying American flags and "Don´t Tread On Me" banners — turned out for the chilly outdoor rally at the New York state capitol in Albany. The "Guns Across America" rallies,

A few days ago, I checked with a half-dozen Washington-area hotels, ranging from the luxe Willard Intercontinental to the not-so-luxe Hampton Inn, and found that all had rooms available for this weekend’s Obama inauguration festivities. That was a huge change from Obama’s first inauguration, in January 2009, when nearly all the area’s hotel rooms were sold out. On Saturday, as Obama supporters arrived for the Monday ceremony, I checked with those hotels again. I asked if they had a room available for arrival on Saturday, staying three nights and departing on Tuesday, January 22.

Apparently, there´s a presidential inauguration scheduled for this holiday weekend. The real one occurs Sunday out of general public view. The parties will then re-enact the ceremony for those watching TV around Monday noon on the King holiday. Less interest in this one, which is not surprising for second terms that often do not turn out so well for incumbents. One interesting historical footnote: This term of the 44th president marks only the second time in U.S. history that Americans have reelected three presidents in a row. Previously, only No. 3, 4 and 5 held that distinction:

On Sunday in Washington, Mr Obama will swear the oath on Michelle Obama´s family Bible in a private White House ceremony to abide by the constitutional decree that the oath must be taken on January 20. Five Britons are feared dead after the Algerian hostage crisis ended in a murderous bloodbath yesterday. The four-day siege reached its climax after seven workers were executed in a final, monstrous act of violence by their Al Qaeda-linked captors just as special forces soldiers stormed the desert gas facility to try to rescue them. Their nationalities are not yet known. All of the 11 remaining militants – who had booby-trapped the complex with explosives – were later shot dead in a fierce gun battle. Scroll down for video
