More than a third of Americans — and 64 percent of Republicans — believe that President Barack Obama might be hiding something, according to a new poll Thursday. Thirty-six percent of the surveyed voters think the president is possibly “hiding important information about his background and early life,” the Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind survey found. (Snip) Sixty-four percent of Republicans think the president isn’t coming clean, 33 percent of independents agree, and 14 percent of Democrats say so, too. “This conspiracy theory is much more widely believed mostly

Last month, PolitiFact selected its "Lie of the Year." Given PolitiFact´s dubious record of singling out Republicans for lying far more often than Democrats, you probably could have guessed the winner of this particular sweepstakes was a Mitt Romney campaign ad: It was a lie told in the critical state of Ohio in the final days of a close campaign -- that Jeep was moving its U.S. production to China. It originated with a conservative blogger, who twisted an accurate news story into a falsehood. Then it picked up steam when the Drudge Report ran with it. Even though Jeep's parent company gave a quick and clear

COLORADO SPRINGS ? President Obama´s Wednesday press conference was political theater at its best. The carefully-selected audience applauded at all the right moments. The reading of letters from children was classic heart-tugging emotionalism. A little girl wrote: "We are sad. We want everybody to be happy and safe." How could we want anything else? Must we become like little children so that this never happens again? Help us, Obi-Barack, you´re our only hope! And so the man who favors abortion with no limits positions himself as Protector of the Children. We should never forget, however,

The Obama administration said Friday that illegal immigrants who qualify for its new non-deportation policy are now “considered to be lawfully present” in the U.S. — a legal status that could help them to get driver’s licenses. Known as “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals,” or DACA, the new policy grants a tentative status to most illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. before age 16 and who are 30 or younger. But the policy has left states facing thorny legal questions about what benefits they can give to those who

The number of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuits filed against the federal government has increased dramatically under the Obama administration, according to a December study by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). A comparison between the last two years of President George W. Bush’s second term and the last two years of President Barack Obama’s first term shows FOIA lawsuits jumped by 28 percent, TRAC reports. FOIA lawsuits are filed to challenge denials of records requests or the use of exemptions of information by federal agencies. The number of

The New York newspaper that made itself infamous for publishing an interactive, Internet-based map revealing the names and addresses of thousands of New York´s law abiding gun owners has now disabled the feature that allows readers to see those names and addresses. The Westchester-area Journal News caused outrage among New York´s legal gun owners with its anti-gun stunt as the story surged across the country. Citing public safety issues, as late as last Tuesday a group of 50 current and former law enforcement officials gathered to demand that the newspaper remove the names from public view.

President Obama hasn´t been seen in public today, but he hasn´t been idle either -- he´s been entertaining financial backers at the White House. The president and first lady Michelle Obama hosted donors and other supporters in town for second inauguration weekend. A "Benefactors´ Brunch" took place at the White House from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., says pool reporter Alexis Simendinger of Real Clear Politics. A reception for supporters took place from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Neither event was listed on the White House public schedule.

For some time, there have been unsubstantiated reports of the Obama administration engaging in clandestine negotiations with China toward satisfying America’s debt to that nation via exchanges of land and resources. Such an arrangement would be illegal and treasonous of course, but given its deportment to date, that would not likely deter this administration. Also, in the face of having trillions of dollars in debt called by China, and the economic catastrophe that would ensue, it is entirely possible that Obama might request and be granted some manner of dispensation from Congress to legitimize this pact.

Haynes allegedly rushed upon Kerri Dalton with no warning as she pushed her son´s stroller through the store and he´s accused of then stabbing Dalton repeatedly in the chest, puncturing both her lungs. Democrat Elizabeth Colbert-Busch plans to file next week to enter the race for the 1st District, her campaign manager Bill Romjue said Friday. She´ll join an already notable list of candidates.[Snip] And Teddy Turner, the son of media magnate Ted Turner, is also running as a Republican. It´s time for the Obamas to dust off their dancin´ shoes. After Monday´s presidential inauguration in Washington, the commander-in-chief and his first lady will have two inaugural balls to attend. Each event is set to feature performances from some of the top musical acts in the business (no doubt performing a few tunes from Obama´s official Spotify playlist). What most of us will be waiting for, however, is the moment Barack and Michelle step onto the dance floor. If celebrations past are any indication, the president will wear his finest tux and the first lady will get decked out

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. –A suburban New York City newspaper has removed the names and addresses of residents with pistol permits from its website. Publication of the permit data following last month´s school shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn. produced a storm of outrage from gun owners. It also quickly resulted in a new state measure meant to protect permit holders´ privacy. The president and publisher of The Journal News Media Group announced the move Friday. Janet Hasson said the new law does not require removing the data, but "doing so complies with its spirit."

More than eight in ten American voters (83 percent) think government spending is out of control, according to a Fox News poll released Friday. That’s up from 78 percent who said so in 2010 and 62 percent in 2009. Some 11 percent think spending is being managed carefully. The poll also finds almost all voters rate the nation’s economy negatively. Those are two of the reasons why President Obama begins his second term with mixed reviews: 47 percent of voters both approve and disapprove of his job performance.

Lance Armstrong may have lied to Oprah Winfrey during his so-called confession Thursday night about his doping during the Tour de France bicycle race, investigators told ABC News today. Armstrong, 41, admitted for the first time that his decade-long dominance of cycling and seven wins in the Tour de France were owed, in part, to performance-enhancing drugs and oxygen-boosting blood transfusions. He told Winfrey that he was taking the opportunity to confess to everything he had done wrong, including angrily denying reports for years claiming that he had doped.

A perplexed Andrea Mitchell on Thursday highlighted a new NBC poll finding high favorability numbers for the National Rifle Association, results she deemed "surprising." The veteran journalist proclaimed: "The NRA brand has been fairly toxic in many of the debates, the gun debates especially since Newtown, but their membership base is broad and deep." [See video below. MP3 audio here.] One reason the brand has been "toxic" is because of relentlessly negative coverage from reporters. Yet, NBC political editor Mark Murray explained, "Despite a lot of the criticism the NRA has received in the month after the Newtown shootings,

Okay, it´s official. According to the Treasury Department, the U.S. debt jumped to $16.1 trillion in 2012 from $14.8 trillion in 2011. That´s a $1.3 trillion deficit for the last year. Remarkable. During President Obama´s first term, the federal debt rose by roughly $6 trillion. Now, if they are bold, House Republicans will take advantage of these dismal numbers. Bold means bold spending cuts, as in cut spending like there´s no tomorrow. Bold means implementing the $1.2 trillion spending sequester. Bold means an absolute rock-solid commitment to spending cuts. A new Rasmussen survey

It’s a popular talking point with conservatives that the purpose of the Second Amendment is to act as a check on a tyrannical government, our own government. According to liberal radio and TV host Thom Hartman, though, the original purpose of the amendment was to act as a check on rebellious slaves, which might just put a kink in Gun Appreciation Day founder Larry Ward‘s theory about Martin Luther King. On Hartmann’s The Big Picture with Thom Hartmann, Hartmann laid it out. “Gun-crazy America is arming up,” he said. ”While Vice President Biden and his gun task force think of

It’s one of the most fundamental political questions of our time: What’s driving the growth in government spending? And it has a relatively straightforward answer: first and foremost, spending on health care through Medicare and Medicaid, and other major social insurance and entitlement programs. But I thought it was worth reviewing the evidence in a bit more detail. There are a few surprises along the way, some of which liberal readers might like and others of which will please conservative readers. The Web site usgovernmentspending.com has an abundance of data on federal,

The Obama administration has rejected an offer from al-Qaeda-linked militants to swap two Americans held captive at an Algerian gas field in exchange for the release of two prominent terrorists jailed in the United States. The kidnappers made the outrageous offer this morning through a Mauritanian news agency but US officials were quick to shut it down, insisting the administration rejects any such trade of hostages for convicted terrorists. The news comes as U.S. officials confirmed that one American, Frederick Buttaccio of Texas, has died in the hostage standoff and CNN reports that another US citizen who was unaccounted

Act 10 was the controversial reform law passed in Wisconsin in 2011 after weeks of protests and stalling by Democratic members of the legislature. Unions filed suit against the law seeking to have the court overturn it and were partially successful at the district court level. But today the Court of Appeals issued a decision in favor of the law and the Governor. Plaintiffs and cross-appellants, representing seven of Wisconsin’s largest public
