That’s pretty toothy, so I’m going to call you “Bob.” But whatever specific name you go by, Bob, you know who you are. You’re the sort of person who says to his conservative friends or co-workers something like, “I would totally vote for Republicans if they could just give up on these crazy social issues.” When you explain your votes for Barack Obama, you talk about how Republicans used to be much more moderate and focused on important things such as low taxes, fiscal discipline, and balanced budgets. When Colin Powell was on Meet the Press the other day, you

In the last 24 hours, the media have scrutinized Notre Dame All-American linebacker Manti Te´o´s life more completely than they did President Barack Obama´s in the last eight years. And that is shameful -- on both counts. The crux of the Te´o story, of course, is whether Te´o conspired to fabricate his seemingly tragic relationship with imaginary girlfriend Lennay Kekua or whether he is a victim of a cruel hoax. Much is at stake -- or so we are told. If Te´o proves to be a willing participant in a hoax, NFL scouts will question his character

As outlined in a column earlier this week, Republicans/conservatives should try to outmaneuver Barack Obama and his leftist allies via a new strategy consisting of guerrilla tactics, constantly keeping Obama on the defensive, combined with a re-crafting of how conservatives communicate our principles. Conservatives have proved inept at managing crisis-atmosphere brinksmanship, but we can consistently win smaller skirmishes and ward off societal disaster long enough to outlast the Democrats’ current hold on the Senate and the White House. It’s not that budget-cutters in Congress are wrong, for instance, to try to use the debt ceiling and other legislative deadlines

As a general rule, I avoid “healthy” food whenever possible. I try to eat things with extra fat and lots of additives. (Snip) For a brief period this week, however, I was on the verge of bestowing my custom on Whole Foods Market, despite its deplorable policy of “selling the highest quality natural and organic products available.” Why? Because it seemed that the grocery chain’s CEO, John Mackey, was that elusive creature for whom Diogenes searched so fruitlessly — an honest man. Mackey is currently promoting his new book, Conscious Capitalism, and has therefore subjected himself

Last week, the Marines made it clear that its spouses’ clubs could not discriminate against same-sex couples. Wednesday, the Army said: not so fast. As things stand now, the Army, backed by the Pentagon, is saying it will not bar recognition of spouses’ clubs that prohibit same-sex couples from membership. This all began awhile back at Fort Bragg, N.C., after the Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses denied Ashley Broadway membership, even though she is married to Army Lieutenant Colonel Heather Mack. Broadway says she is “extremely disappointed” by the decision.

A private organization that “helped lay the groundwork” for Obamacare is hosting a symposium to “offer specialized education in health care reporting” for mainstream reporters from outlets including Reuters and Money magazine. As reported by Rusty Weiss for FreedomWorks, the Commonwealth Fund is sponsoring a two-day symposium, hosted by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) entitled “The Business of Health Care” at Reuters headquarters in New York City. The symposium will “offer specialized education in health care reporting” and “boost knowledge of the Affordable Care Act.”

In the midst of a ferocious battle with the president over gun control in America, the National Rifle Association continues to have more supporters than detractors, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. According to the poll, the NRA enjoys 41% positive approval rating, with a 34% negative rating. That compares with 41% positive and 29% negative in January 2011. The NRA has been in the spotlight after the December massacre of 20 children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Conn. NRA executive Wayne LaPierre proposed putting armed guard in schools —

I rarely find myself in complete agreement with anything that comes out of the Obama administration. But I have to commend Jon Carson, the White House director of public engagement, for his thoughtful response to the petitions received from those asking that Texas and some other states be allowed to peacefully withdraw from the union. This is the sort of thing that can easily be dismissed as the domain of crackpots. Fortunately, only a tiny minority of Texans supports secession. Nevertheless, the ongoing debates about gun control and the debt ceiling have given a concept

Violence: If gun-control worked, the president´s hometown would be safe. Instead, gangs of fatherless youths daily kill other fatherless youths. How about an executive order endorsing marriage and intact families? We do not know how history might have been different had the parents of Newtown shooter Adam Lanza not divorced in 2009, leaving the troubled young man with his mother in a single-parent home. But if there´s a thread that links the carnage at Sandy Hook with the 500-plus murders in Chicago in 2012, it´s not just the use of guns to kill.

Last year, when the blogger and amateur gynecologist Andrew Sullivan published a Newsweek cover story proclaiming Barack Obama the liberal Ronald Reagan, conservatives mocked him. No one deserves mockery more than Sullivan—well, maybe Paul Krugman—but in this case the criticism was misplaced. On the eve of his second inauguration, we ought to face the unpleasant fact that Obama will be remembered as a president of achievement and consequence. It does not matter if, like I do, you think those achievements are horrible and that their consequences will be worse.

You came away with this on Thursday night, after we finally saw the interview that Oprah Winfrey did with Lance Armstrong on Monday in Austin: Armstrong was much more compelling as a liar than he was trying to tell the truth to Oprah with about as much feeling as somebody reciting a grocery list. Oh, he told some truths with Oprah, right at the top of the show, she got right to it before she let him wander around so much in a weird and disconnected performance that you’re glad he didn’t ride this way in the Tour de France,

A federal judge heard arguments on whether Utah can prohibit plural marriage but issued no immediate ruling in a lawsuit by the stars of the reality show "Sister Wives." Kody Brown and his four wives claim the law is unconstitutional. The family fled Utah for Las Vegas last year under the threat of prosecution. They did not attend Thursday´s hearing in Salt Lake City, leaving arguments to a constitutional law professor. "The Browns wanted to show people that a plural family is not a monstrosity," said Jonathan Turley of The George Washington University. "They don´t commit collateral problems."

One of the president’s new executive orders will allow the Centers for Disease Control to conduct gun research again. The CDC is a horrible choice for this project, both because gun violence is has nothing to do with “disease control” and because the agency has a track record of poor research in this area. Also, the holes in our knowledge are much smaller than some on the left would like to think — and many of the questions that have not been answered cannot be answered, simply because the tools of social science are not up to the task.

Walter White has nothing on this man of God. A Connecticut priest — who once was a top aide to Edward Cardinal Egan — was busted for selling ultra-pure crystal meth shipped to him by California co-conspirators, law-enforcement officials said yesterday. Monsignor Kevin Wallin, 61, faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted of the drug conspiracy, which echoes the hit AMC show “Breaking Bad,” where mild-mannered science teacher White becomes a drug kingpin. Wallin was likely slinging meth to help fund his purchase of a shop selling drug paraphernalia, adult movies and toys, authorities said.

It should come as no surprise that a notorious jihadist named Mokhtar Belmokhtar is suspected of ordering the raid on a BP oil field in eastern Algeria and the subsequent kidnapping of dozens. Belmokhtar has been at this game for a while. His career shows that jihadist ideology and criminality can comingle. Belmokhtar’s operations have run the gamut, from cigarette smuggling to gunrunning to kidnappings to outright murder. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t a loyal ideologue to al Qaeda, too. In late 2012, Belmokhtar, a longtime al Qaeda

There was something nauseating about the way Barack Obama surrounded himself with children as he unveiled his gun control plans. It looked like emotional blackmail. "Look these innocent babes in the face and tell them guns are good" – that was the implicit message of this cynical, innocence-exploiting press conference, which brought to mind one of the late Wacko Jacko´s weird child-centred peace concerts more than it did a serious Lincoln-style presidential address. What Obama and his advisers appear to have overlooked is that it doesn´t matter one jot what children think of guns, or anything else

Manti Te’o was the hero of the college football season, overcoming the loss of both his grandmother and his girlfriend on the same day to lead his team to victory over Michigan State. But then Deadspin broke the news that Lennay Kekua was nothing but an online figment, compiled from stolen Facebook pictures, possibly by Te’o’s friend Ronaiah Tuiasosopo. Te’o says he was the victim of a hoax, but others are skeptical that he could have been suckered for so long.Below, three theories on how the Catfish-meets-Lifetime scandal might have come about.

Fox News Channel is expected to announce shortly that Karl Rove has signed a multi-year deal to remain a Fox contributor through the 2016 election. The contract assures the ratings-leader cable news network that it will retain one of its most popular commentators, and someone whose views continually make news, especially in the heat of a campaign. Rove appears on a variety of Fox programs including “Hannity,” where he and Sean Hannity talked Wednesday night about President Barack Obama´s gun control plan, and the assault weapons ban.

Recent events in Mali and Libya, not to mention Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Pakistan, Bengla Desh, Somalia, and several other pleasure spots remind us — if such a reminder were necessary — that the Islamic world is, to put it mildly, not a fun place to be. According to religionofpeace.com, Islamic terrorists have accounted for 20,261 deadly terror attacks since 9/11. (Snip)Now it’s undeniable that back in the twentieth century, Germany, the Soviet Union and China were yet bigger killing machines, but in our time the Islamic world is the problem. Some say the reasons for this are complex,

Via Mark Levin, here’s what happens when Doing Something is more important than knowing what you’re doing. You’ve got a governor here who’s facing reelection in 2014 and may well end up being the national frontrunner for his party’s nomination in 2016 if Hillary doesn’t run. He’s feeling political pressure not just from above, in the form of a president who’s vowed to drum up Do Something fever among Democrats nationally, but from below in the form of a rich, high-profile nanny-state mayor for whom this is a pet issue.

Whenever a politician proposes a policy surrounded by children, skepticism is in order. But skepticism, logic and sound argumentation are the enemies of President Obama in his gun control push, which kicked off Wednesday on a White House stage filled with kids. After December´s Sandy Hook massacre, Obama has reached deeper than usual into his bag of debater´s tricks and rhetorical ploys. He assigns evil motives to those who disagree with him on policy. He tries to pre-empt cost-benefit analysis with facile assertions that any policy is mandatory if it will save "only one life."

The Obama administration´s current warpath against so-called "gun violence" -- which is Newspeak for non-violence committed by non-criminals with their non-illegal private property -- is a brazen challenge to America´s manhood. The progressives have apparently decided that this is the moment when they can play their ultimate authoritarian hand, and let the chips fall where they may. They believe, in other words, that this is the moment when they may be able to break America at last, one way or another.

Midler fired off a tweet today that used the country´s current mental health conversation post Sandy Hook as a way to pound her ideological enemy, the late Ronald Reagan.

The gun control debate is good for Republicans, good for the White House, and good for Democratic presidential hopefuls, since they can all play to their respective bases. But the biggest losers of the fight will probably be Harry Reid and the handful of Democratic senators up for reelection in red-leaning states. The Hill reports: Reid’s job is to help move President Obama’s agenda through the upper chamber, but he must also protect his five-seat Senate majority, and gun-rights groups are threatening to go after vulnerable Senate Democrats
