Bette Midler is the latest liberal to follow the wisdom of former Obama administration official Rahm Emmanuel - "you never want a serious crisis to go to waste." Midler fired off a tweet today that used the country´s current mental health conversation post Sandy Hook as a way to pound her ideological enemy, the late Ronald Reagan.

Why is Obama
Forcing Democratic Fight

The gun control debate is good for Republicans, good for the White House, and good for Democratic presidential hopefuls, since they can all play to their respective bases. But the biggest losers of the fight will probably be Harry Reid and the handful of Democratic senators up for reelection in red-leaning states. The Hill reports: Reid’s job is to help move President Obama’s agenda through the upper chamber, but he must also protect his five-seat Senate majority, and gun-rights groups are threatening to go after vulnerable Senate Democrats

At retreat, GOP advances
debt-limit strategies

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The chairman of the House Budget Committee on Thursday said the House GOP is considering a short-term extension of the nation’s debt limit to buy Democrats and Republicans some additional time to hash out a long-term deficit-reduction deal, and to force a national conversation over the size and scope of the federal budget. Rep. Paul Ryan, the party’s 2012 vice presidential nominee, said the short-term extension — coupled with reforms or spending cuts — is one of several options that lawmakers knocked around

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a vocal opponent of President Obama´s healthcare reform law, surprised her state this week by announcing that she would embrace a key component of the law. (Snip) A skeptic of Obama´s Affordable Care Act, Brewer announced her decision in her State of the State address Monday. If she didn´t accept the Medicaid money for Arizona, she said, other states would claim those federal funds. "With this move, we will secure a federal revenue stream to cover the costs of the uninsured who already show up in our doctor´s offices and emergency rooms," Brewer

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — House Republicans are weighing a plan to raise the nation’s legal borrowing limit for just a few months, a move that could shift debate over the debt ceiling into March, when Congress will face other major fiscal decisions, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said Thursday. But, speaking to reporters at the annual House Republicans retreat at Williamsburg’s storied Kingsmill Resort, Ryan said Republicans are still in intense discussions about how to approach the difficult question of raising the debt ceiling. He said House leaders were using closed-door sessions Thursday to educate their own members, many of them itching

JERUSALEM — Less than a week before Israel’s parliamentary election, a fractured array of centrist parties has failed to join forces and offer a coherent alternative to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Divided by personal rivalries and the lack of a shared agenda, Netanyahu’s centrist challengers remain at odds, and two have even signaled more readiness to join a future coalition under his leadership than unite with each other. While Netanyahu has focused on what he portrays as his ability to defend Israel militarily and diplomatically, his centrist opponents are trying to steer the campaign

Washington - Less than half the number of inauguration visitors who came out in 2009 are anticipated when President Obama is sworn in for the second time Monday. But that won´t stop security from being just as tight - only this time, with some improvements. And even with the smaller crowd, if you want to get to the National Mall on Inauguration Day, you´re probably better off not driving. The hundreds of thousands of people spilling into the nation's capital Monday are encouraged to travel by rail, bus or bicycle. And no matter what they choose, those watching the inauguration activities

It was only two years ago that then-CIA Director David Petraeus testified before Congress on the dangers posed by Somali terrorists, saying "extremist networks over the past two decades have made southern Somalia one of the world’s most significant havens for terrorists. Al Qaeda’s affiliate there — al Shabaab — is large and well-funded relative to most extremist groups, and it has attracted and trained hundreds of foreign fighters, including scores of Americans and dozens from other Western countries." Today the U.S. is preparing to formally recognize the Somali government,

Lance Armstrong finally came clean about his years of doping in his first lengthy public interview since the governing committees accused him of running the ´sophisticated´ doping ring to secure his world record titles. ‘I view this situation as one big lie that I repeated a lot of times,’ he said in an televised interview with Oprah Winfrey. He admitted that he doped in some form for each of his seven Tour de France victories, though he maintained that the last time that he ´crossed that line´ was in 2005. A West Point think tank has issued a paper warning America about “far right” groups such as the “anti-federalist” movement, which supports “civil activism, individual freedoms and self-government.” The report issued this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., is titled “Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right.” The center — part of the institution where men and women are molded into Army officers — posted the report Tuesday. It lumps limited government activists with three movements it identifies as “a racist/white supremacy movement, an anti-federalist movement

´Legit,” FX’s new series starring Aussie Jim Jeffries, as Jim Jeffries, is wrong on every level. It’s crude, shocking and politically incorrect on a cosmic level. And that’s just part of what makes “Legit” so damned funny. But make no mistake, this isn’t shocking-just-to-shock stuff. I mean, seriously? How often have you seen a series devoted to a drug-loving, drunken, failed comedian, who takes in his roommate Steve’s paralyzed brother, Billy, who is dying from muscular dystrophy — after taking him to a cat house and discovering

David Cameron has been warned to expect “multiple” Britons to be among up to 34 gas workers killed in the West’s worst hostage crisis in a generation. A botched military attack on a BP gas plant in Algeria, where al-Qaeda kidnappers were holding 41 westerners, led to a bloodbath as helicopter gunships opened fire on the compound. The attack was carried out against the wishes of Mr Cameron and other Western leaders, who had urged Algeria to negotiate with the kidnappers after the captives said bombs had been strapped to their bodies.

The more Israel’s former foreign minister and chief negotiator, Tzipi Livni, talks about making peace with the Palestinians, the more polls show her dwindling into obscurity before next week’s election. After drawing the most votes in 2009 -- a Pyrrhic victory when Benjamin Netanyahu managed to form a coalition government and send her to the opposition -- Livni is struggling to make a dent before Israelis cast their ballots on Jan. 22. Her Hatenuah party is projected to win only six of the Knesset’s 120 seats in a poll commissioned by the Walla! news website, compared with 34 for Netanyahu’s

Presidential inaugurations are rare and notable events, coming only once every four years since April 30, 1789, when George Washington raised his right hand and took the oath on the second-floor balcony of New York´s Federal Hall. It´s a big day with all its pomp and ceremony, and among its purposes is this: to encourage all who watch to let go, for a moment, of the ups and downs of the political day-to-day and think, for a moment, about the longer arc of our history. A president´s inaugural address is a chance to go big

A troubling oversight has been found within New York State´s sweeping new gun laws. The ban on having high-capacity magazines, as it´s written, would also include law enforcement officers. Magazines with more than seven rounds will be illegal under the new law when that part takes effect in March. As the statute is currently written, it does not exempt law enforcement officers. Nearly every law enforcement agency in the state carries hand guns that have a 15 round capacity. Warning about "weapons designed for the theater of war," President Obama on Wednesday called for immediate action on a new Federal Assault Weapons Ban. He said that "more of our fellow Americans might still be alive" if the original assault weapons ban, passed in 1994, had not expired in 2004. Last month, in the wake of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) promised to introduce an updated version of the ban. She too warned of the threat posed by "military weapons." After the nightmare of Newtown, their concern is understandable.

It has become conventional wisdom that Republicans are suffering an internal split that President Obama is successfully exploiting to neuter the Republican House. It is not true, however, that the Republican split is philosophical and fundamental, and that a hopelessly divided GOP is therefore headed for decline, perhaps irrelevance. In fact, the split is tactical, not philosophical; short-term, not fundamental. And therefore quite solvable. How do we know? Simple thought experiment: Imagine that we had a Republican president. Would the party be deeply divided over policy, at war with itself in Congress? Not at all.

Al-Qaida Resurgent As Terror

Islamofascism: The terrorist attack on a vast Algerian gas plant Wednesday shows a resurgent al-Qaida that puts the lie to the Obama administration´s claim that the war on terror is all but over. It may in fact be just beginning. Everything about the al-Qaida "Blood Brigade" attack on the Al Amenas natural gas plant 800 miles east of Algiers — where hundreds of workers, including Americans, were taken hostage in a bloody standoff — suggests an organization growing in strength with a bigger game than just retaliating for the French invasion of Mali.
