A Mexican national claims to be the man who shot and killed U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, whose death is tied to the "Fast and Furious" gun-walking scandal. Gustavo Cruz-Lozano, who says he killed Terry, turned himself in on Wednesday on charges related to a separate incident: threatening to kill Hidalgo County, Texas Sheriff Lupe Treviño. But before he surrendered himself, Cruz-Lozano said in an exclusive interview with Univision News´ daily news magazine show "Primer Impacto" that he murdered Terry during a firefight on Dec. 14, 2010, while the agent was on

Republican senator Ted Cruz of Texas said Thursday that Barack Obama is "high on his own power" with regard to the president´s announced efforts on gun control. Speaking on Laura Ingraham´s radio talk show, Cruz, who was just elected to the Senate last November, said "this is a president who has drunk the Kool-Aid." "He is feeling right now high on his own power, and he is pushing on every front, on guns," Cruz said. "And I think it´s really sad to see the president of the United States exploiting the murder of children and using it

Presidential inaugurations are rare and notable events, coming only once every four years since April 30, 1789, when George Washington raised his right hand and took the oath on the second-floor balcony of New York´s Federal Hall. It´s a big day with all its pomp and ceremony, and among its purposes is this: to encourage all who watch to let go, for a moment, of the ups and downs of the political day-to-day and think, for a moment, about the longer arc of our history. A president´s inaugural address is a chance to go big

A troubling oversight has been found within New York State´s sweeping new gun laws. The ban on having high-capacity magazines, as it´s written, would also include law enforcement officers. Magazines with more than seven rounds will be illegal under the new law when that part takes effect in March. As the statute is currently written, it does not exempt law enforcement officers. Nearly every law enforcement agency in the state carries hand guns that have a 15 round capacity. A spokesman for the governor´s office called Eyewitness News to say, "We are still working out some details

Warning about "weapons designed for the theater of war," President Obama on Wednesday called for immediate action on a new Federal Assault Weapons Ban. He said that "more of our fellow Americans might still be alive" if the original assault weapons ban, passed in 1994, had not expired in 2004. Last month, in the wake of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) promised to introduce an updated version of the ban. She too warned of the threat posed by "military weapons." After the nightmare of Newtown, their concern is understandable.

It has become conventional wisdom that Republicans are suffering an internal split that President Obama is successfully exploiting to neuter the Republican House. It is not true, however, that the Republican split is philosophical and fundamental, and that a hopelessly divided GOP is therefore headed for decline, perhaps irrelevance. In fact, the split is tactical, not philosophical; short-term, not fundamental. And therefore quite solvable. How do we know? Simple thought experiment: Imagine that we had a Republican president. Would the party be deeply divided over policy, at war with itself in Congress? Not at all.

Islamofascism: The terrorist attack on a vast Algerian gas plant Wednesday shows a resurgent al-Qaida that puts the lie to the Obama administration´s claim that the war on terror is all but over. It may in fact be just beginning. Everything about the al-Qaida "Blood Brigade" attack on the Al Amenas natural gas plant 800 miles east of Algiers — where hundreds of workers, including Americans, were taken hostage in a bloody standoff — suggests an organization growing in strength with a bigger game than just retaliating for the French invasion of Mali. French nuclear energy conglomerate Areva said on Thursday it had beefed up safety procedures at two uranium mines in Niger after green activists said contaminated scrap metal from the facilities had been discovered at a local junkyard. A nuclear watchdog association, CRIIRAD, and a group in Niger called Aghir In´Man said 1,600 tonnes of metal used in uranium extraction had been hauled out of the mine complexes at Arlit and were now in the public domain. They said that around 1,000 tonnes of this had been found at a scrap metal dealer´s, where handheld Geiger counter measurements in August

Britain was plunged into a diplomatic crisis last night after a botched rescue left 30 hostages dead at a BP site in Algeria. At least two Britons were among those killed when government troops attacked the Al Qaeda terrorists holding them. The Algerians ignored demands from David Cameron to inform him first--and not to go in ´with all guns blazing´. The situation grew so grave the Prime Minister abandoned a trip to the Netherlands today to give his long-awaited speech on relations with Europe. He is said to be furious with Algiers because he learned of the disastrous assault only

Around half of Asian Americans relied on ethnic media for news during the last election in which the growing community voted overwhelmingly for President Barack Obama, a study said Thursday. Massive support by minorities played a vital role in Obama´s re-election on November 6. Asian Americans made up 3.4 percent of the electorate and could play a greater future role as they form the fastest expanding racial group.(Snip)The detailed findings found that 77 percent of Asian Americans voted for Obama, slightly higher than earlier projections and capping a major shift toward his Democratic Party since the 1990s.

RUSH: Marco Rubio, in the United States Senate, said the president "doesn´t have the guts" to admit that he doesn´t believe in the Second Amendment. Marco Rubio says that this dog and pony show (my words, not his) is not about ending gun violence. It´s exactly what our caller from North Carolina said that Bob Schieffer was doing when he goes out and compares the NRA to Hitler and says (summarized), "My gosh, if this country defeated Hitler, certainly we can defeat the NRA." What really is going on is a battle to defeat the Constitution,

Vice President Joseph R. Biden on Thursday revealed his own brush with a school-shooting massacre in defending the far-reaching package of gun-control regulations that President Obama endorsed this week. Mr. Biden told a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Washington that it was “pure coincidence” that he was in Lancaster County, Pa., on Oct. 2, 2006, when a deranged gunman was killing students nearby at a tiny Amish school. “I happened to be literally — probably, it turned out, to be a quarter of a mile [away] at an outing when I heard gunshots in the woods,” Mr. Biden recounted.

College students will face a couple of new challenges and opportunities as they begin applying for financial aid for the 2013-14 school year. Students filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, will be encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, which will automatically transfer information from tax returns into the application. This tool is supposed to save time and reduce errors (and fraud). It also reduces the chance that a student´s application will be selected for verification. But its usefulness could be limited this year because the "fiscal cliff" negotiations delayed the start

TRENTON – Gov. Christie blasted the NRA’s new ad focusing on President Obama’s daughters – he called it “reprehensible” – but he wouldn’t given an opinion about a proposed federal assault weapons ban. Christie’s extensive comments on the issues of guns and violence came during a news conference this afternoon at the Statehouse in which Christie announced the creation of a task force to examine “violence control” measures in the wake of the shooting massacre in Sandy Hook. Led by two former state attorneys general, one Republican and one Democrat, and made up of

Washington - Non-U.S. pension funds and mutual funds were spared the full brunt of new U.S. information-reporting rules on overseas accounts meant to catch Americans who dodge U.S. taxes by keeping their assets offshore. Chiefly targeting banks, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) rules, published by the U.S. Treasury on Thursday, require foreign financial institutions with $50,000 of any American taxpayer´s assets to report the holdings to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Yet whatever I say, I think, pales in comparison to what Bob Schieffer said yesterday. Where is the media outrage when Bob Schieffer of CBS compares Obama´s gun initiatives to defeating Hitler? In other words, taking on the NRA is the equivalent of taking on Adolf Hitler. Now, is there room for that in our discourse today? Why is that not an example of over-the-top defamation, exaggeration? Why isn´t it insulting, not

Shellfish such as crabs, lobsters and shrimp feel pain, suggests a new study that calls into question how food and aquaculture industries treat these animals. Researchers have suspected for some time that live lobsters dunked into boiling water and rubber-banded crustaceans stored in crowded fish market tanks experience tremendous pain. Discovery News reported on that some years back. But it’s always a challenge for scientists to prove conclusively that a non-human is feeling pain. “On a philosophical point, it is impossible to demonstrate absolutely that an animal experiences pain,” researcher

Russ Millette was elected chairman of the Alaska Republican Party in April when a group of Ron Paul supporters, tea party backers, and anti-establishment delegates showed up at the state party´s convention in large numbers. In Alaska, the Republican Party chairman is elected in an even numbered year and begins his term at the beginning of the next year. Outgoing chairman Randy Ruedrich supported Lisa Murkowski, the incumbent Senator who lost the 2012 Republican primary to tea party backed Joe Miller, only to defeat him as a write-in candidate in the general election.

As some of you may have already heard, the state of North Dakota is currently experiencing a politically incorrect and politically inconvenient economic boom in the midst of Obama´s national economic program of stagnation. Thanks to the discovery of oil and a government´s willingness to get out of the way so industrious, risk-taking individuals can go after it, North Dakota is now a working, breathing, real-life repudiation of everything Obama and his media worshipers stand for. This of course makes news outlets like the New York Times uncomfortable.
