NRA Doubles Down

As I’ve already said, I neither think having armed guards at schools is a crazy idea nor think Wayne LaPierre was right to advocate some national legislative push for their installation. But I was both a-mused and b-mused by the president’s endorsement of more guns in schools (on the persons of “school resource officers”) during his speech today, coming as it did after all of polite society has spent the last month calling for LaPierre to be fitted for a straitjacket for proposing the exact same thing. The NRA should recut

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal interviewed my colleague Chuck DeVore (formerly of the California legislature) on his new book, The Texas Model. Chuck joined the Texas Public Policy Foundation about a year ago after packing up his family and moving to Texas, as so many other Californians are doing. Chuck makes a great point here, namely that the Texas model resembles what America used to be like: light taxation and regulation and an environment that encourages risk-taking, innovation, and entrepreneurship. California, on the other hand, has become the very model of high taxation, high spending

Camp LeJeune, N.C. - A Marine who pleaded guilty Wednesday to urinating on the corpses of dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan will likely be demoted one rank under a plea agreement, although a military judge called for a much harsher sentence. Staff Sgt. Edward W. Deptola pleaded guilty to multiple charges at court-martial, including dereliction of duty for desecrating remains, posing for photographs with the corpses and failing to properly supervise junior Marines. The judge, Lt. Col Nicole Hudspeth, would have sentenced him to six months confinement, a $5,000 fine,

A brief update from a Republican Insider fighting to renew conservative principles and defeat the globalist Big Government liberalism of Barack Obama and his supporters. (Snip) Last week the president was ready to go all in on the executive order scenario.  Confiscation was going to be in play.  Then the backlash came and it forced Obama to back off.  He didn’t want to but after Reid said it was a no go, and the NRA was preparing to go to war with the White House, the president was given a revised script and that is what we heard this morning.

Rep. Huelskamp worries that the administration will coordinate controversial parts of Obamacare that may invade patient privacy with the president’s new strident gun control efforts. U.S. regulators grounded all Boeing787 Dreamliner jetliners Wednesday after a series of recent incidents raised concerns about the aircrafts’ safety. The Federal Aviation Administration issued an “emergency airworthiness directive” that required all Dreamliners to “temporarily cease operations.” Regulators cited an an issue with a lithium ion battery that forced one of the planes to make an emergency landing in Japan on Wednesday. “Before further flight, operators of U.S.-registered Boeing 787 aircraft must demonstrate to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that the batteries are

The NASA rover Curiosity is set to use its drill for the first time on Mars in a region where water once possibly flowed, scientists say. Boring into a rock would be one of the 1-ton rover’s most difficult tasks since arriving on the Red Planet Aug. 5. “This is something that we waited patiently for and accepted risk in driving to this destination,” said mission scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech. “This has been very exciting.” The target is a complex rock in a terrain on the Red Planet called Yellowknife Bay. The rover’s instruments have detected veins, sandstone and other features that scientists

Algiers/Bamako-Islamist fighters have opened an international front in Mali´s civil war by taking dozens of Western hostages at a gas plant in the Algerian desert just as French troops launched an offensive against rebels in neighboring Mali. Nearly 24 hours after gunmen stormed the natural gas pumping site and workers´ housing before dawn on Wednesday, little was certain beyond a claim by a group calling itself the "Battalion of Blood" that it was holding 41 foreign nationals, including Americans, Japanese and Europeans, at Tigantourine, deep in the Sahara. Jews of European origin are a mix of ancestries, with many hailing from tribes in the Caucasus who converted to Judaism and created an empire that lasted half a millennium, according to a gene study published on Thursday. The investigation, its author says, should settle a debate that has been roiling for more than two centuries. Jews of European descent, often called Ashkenazis, account for some 90 percent of the more than 13 million Jews in the world today. According to the so-called Rhineland Hypothesis, Ashkenazis descended from Jews who progressively fled Palestine after the Moslem conquest of 638

ObamaCare: The individual mandate, which is the centerpiece of the Affordable Care Act, hasn´t even been phased in and already there are calls to increase its cost. Did we ever mention that this was a bad law? All the parts of the Democrats´ overhaul of American health care hang off the individual mandate, which requires those without health care insurance and aren´t in a government program to buy a plan or face a fine. The fine, which won´t go into effect until next year, is $95, or 1% of income, whichever is higher.

How to Wage the Debt-Ceiling Fight

The debt limit must soon be increased, and President Obama insists that Congress give him the ability to borrow without any accompanying budget reforms or spending cuts. He argues that only a long-term, "clean" debt-limit bill is responsible fiscal policy, and that anyone who disagrees risks government default and a financial catastrophe. Republicans are balking—not the first time members of the opposition party have balked when a president seeks more borrowing authority. The usual response—threatening to block an increase unless they get what they want—is not very effective. The GOP´s attempt to do so will most likely fail.

In the wake of the recent shootings, the liberal media have concluded we need more gun control. President Obama just signed 23 executive actions related to guns, and promises to do more later. To them the logic seems obvious, that more guns mean more deaths, suicides, and accidents. And the U.S. supposedly has very high murder rates, they argue, because our nation is teeming with guns. So with stricter gun control, we would suffer fewer murders and less violence. As Charles Blow recently claimed in the New York Times: "America has the highest gun homicide rate, the highest

Politics: Instead of providing them the same armed security his children get, the president exploits children as stage props to repeal a Second Amendment they haven´t been, and likely never will be, taught about. The children who stood with President Obama Wednesday had the benefit of armed security, unlike the schools they´ll return to. Their schools remain in zones that are gun-free, except for predators, as at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. They´ll have no armed guards or teachers allowed to carry concealed protection, and none of Obama´s 23 legislative proposals and executive actions will provide them.

President Barack Obama, who earlier today offered several gun control measures, is currently attending what appears to be the good-bye party for departing Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Via the pool report: POTUS, who says he likes a good party, heard there might be one next door at the Treasury this afternoon for his Cabinet BFF, Secretary Timothy F.
