What Closing the Gun-Show
Loophole Won’t Do

It is an article of faith that closing the “gun-show loophole” would make America a safer place. But that is what it is: faith. In 2008, three criminologists (one of them not at all friendly to guns) studied the effects on murder and suicide rates in California (which prohibits private sales without a background check) and Texas (which does not). They looked at homicide and suicide rates for adjacent ZIP codes for a week after gun shows. They found no change in suicide rates, and in Texas, which has no restrictions on private party sales,

The White House announced today that President Barack Obama will take 23 "executive actions" to deal with guns. The "executive actions," as introduced and written by the White House, are: 1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system. 2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system. 3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system. 4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals

President Obama announced a sweeping slate of new gun control proposals Wednesday designed to curb mass violence. Some of the items will be enacted via executive order while others will require action on Capitol Hill. Below, we take a closer look at the larger proposals that will require action from Congress and offer our best educated guess of how likely they are to pass, based on recent polling and what lawmakers have said: * A ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines

A heinous beatdown in the heart of Greenwich Village has left a Massachusetts man fighting for his life. Kevin McCarron, 24, was bashed with a tire iron, baseball bat and blackjack and stomped repeatedly by a gang of toughs in the middle of MacDougal St. early Sunday, police and witnesses said. Cops on Monday busted 24-year-old Hatem Farsakh of Brooklyn, who was arraigned on charges of attempted murder and assault. Onlookers were horrified by the savage attack. “I started screaming for someone to call the police,” said a 25-year-old woman who captured the incident on video.

A blazing hot December morning. High blue skies. Wide open spaces. This is Fort Worth, Texas, famous for its frontier atmosphere, its stockyards, rodeos, Art Deco downtown – and the vast Lockheed Martin factory. Boasting a mile-long aircraft assembly plant, opened on April 18 1942 – the day Lt Col Jimmy Doolittle led the first Army Air Corps raid on Japan – this is where, for the next quarter of a century, the world’s most sophisticated, controversial and expensive jet fighter will roll off a surgically clean production line. PRINEVILLE, Ore. -- Another Oregon sheriff says he would refuse to enforce any new federal gun law he believes is unconstitutional. Crook County Sheriff Jim Hensley said Tuesday he sent the same letter to Vice President Joe Biden that was sent Monday by Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller. The letter says politicians are attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims in the Connecticut school shooting by supporting laws that would harm law-abiding Americans.

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Wednesday that he supports closing the gun-show loophole and limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines, and said he´ll convene the first hearings surrounding the Sandy Hook school shooting. Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, the chamber´s senior Democrat, said his home state of Vermont, which has a strong tradition of gun rights, has a rule limiting hunters using semiautomatic rifles to just six rounds of ammunition during deer-hunting seasons."Are we really saying as a nation we´re going to be more protective of the deer than we are of our children? I think not," he said.

It’s not like last time, and everywhere you look, someone wants to remind you of that. Hotel rooms are still available (not like laaaast time) and there will be only two official inaugural balls (not like laaaast time) and nobody is going to wait for hours in a cattle-packed tunnel, waving their purple tickets. (Last time! So much fun!)The gargantuan platform affixed to the U.S. Capitol has been growing for weeks, but worriers seem convinced that when Barack Obama steps onto it for his second inauguration, it just won’t feel the same.

The National Rifle Association cast its opposition to Obama’s plans as “the fight of the century” in a letter circulated at the 35th annual Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show and Conference, known in the trade as “the SHOT show,” in Las Vegas. “I warned you this day was coming and now it’s here,” Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s fiery executive vice president, wrote in a fund-raising letter to the group’s 4 million members. “It’s not about protecting your children. It’s not about stopping crime. It’s about banning your guns … PERIOD!”

WASHINGTON— Without waiting for Congress, President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced a sweeping $500 million program to curb gun violence, setting up a fight over universal background checks and bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting. Obama also used his presidential powers to issue 23 orders that don´t require congressional approval. The largely incremental executive steps include requiring federal agencies to make more data available for background checks, appointing a fulltime director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and directing the Centers

Blackbaud Inc. laid off 150 employees today, including about 50 workers at the software company’s Daniel Island headquarters. A company spokeswoman said the job cuts stem from the still-sluggish economy and Blackbaud’s acquisition last year of Convio, a former competitor based in Texas. Convio’s legacy business has not performed as expected. Karoline McLaughlin, the spokeswoman, said the cuts are spread across the company’s offices, but only “a handful” of positions were cut at Convio’s former headquarters in Austin. [Snip] Following the cuts, Blackbaud will have about 2,600 employees. About 1,150 work on Daniel Island.

President Obama has had a complicated history working with congressional Republicans, but is part of his agenda the ultimate failure of his political opposition? That was what both Bill O’Reilly and Charles Krauthammer contended tonight, with O’Reilly attributing it more to a cultural shift in the United States, while Krauthammer argued Obama’s advantage is more a consequence of winning an election. (Snip) O’Reilly said that Obama is far more interested in scoring political points by damaging the GOP than solving the nation’s problems. Mark Sanford, the three-term congressman and two-term South Carolina governor, is preparing his political comeback, running for the House in the district recently represented by Tim Scott. Sanford garnered national headlines in 2009 as the first governor to turn down President Obama’s stimulus funds — and then made even bigger headlines later in the year when it was revealed that he had departed the state to fly to Argentina to meet with his mistress. A messy divorce followed; a state legislative ad hoc committee voted to censure but not impeach him. He served out the remainder of his term,

In an interview with Newsmax, former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III, who served under President Reagan, says President Obama could be impeached by Congress if he enacted gun control through executive order. MEESE: It should be remembered that the president cannot by executive order do things that affects the public at large unless there is some Congressional basis for it. In other words, some Congressional authority he has been given. An executive order without specific Congressional authority can only apply to those portions of the government that are under his control. In their words, the executive branch.

John Mackey made the remark in an interview Wednesday with NPR. "Technically speaking, it´s more like fascism," Mackey said of the Affordable Care Act. "Socialism is where the government owns the means of production.
