For many presidential inaugurations,
the second time is not the charm

It’s not like last time, and everywhere you look, someone wants to remind you of that. Hotel rooms are still available (not like laaaast time) and there will be only two official inaugural balls (not like laaaast time) and nobody is going to wait for hours in a cattle-packed tunnel, waving their purple tickets. (Last time! So much fun!)The gargantuan platform affixed to the U.S. Capitol has been growing for weeks, but worriers seem convinced that when Barack Obama steps onto it for his second inauguration, it just won’t feel the same.

The National Rifle Association cast its opposition to Obama’s plans as “the fight of the century” in a letter circulated at the 35th annual Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show and Conference, known in the trade as “the SHOT show,” in Las Vegas. “I warned you this day was coming and now it’s here,” Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s fiery executive vice president, wrote in a fund-raising letter to the group’s 4 million members. “It’s not about protecting your children. It’s not about stopping crime. It’s about banning your guns … PERIOD!”

WASHINGTON— Without waiting for Congress, President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced a sweeping $500 million program to curb gun violence, setting up a fight over universal background checks and bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting. Obama also used his presidential powers to issue 23 orders that don´t require congressional approval. The largely incremental executive steps include requiring federal agencies to make more data available for background checks, appointing a fulltime director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and directing the Centers

Blackbaud Inc. laid off 150 employees today, including about 50 workers at the software company’s Daniel Island headquarters. A company spokeswoman said the job cuts stem from the still-sluggish economy and Blackbaud’s acquisition last year of Convio, a former competitor based in Texas. Convio’s legacy business has not performed as expected. Karoline McLaughlin, the spokeswoman, said the cuts are spread across the company’s offices, but only “a handful” of positions were cut at Convio’s former headquarters in Austin. [Snip] Following the cuts, Blackbaud will have about 2,600 employees. About 1,150 work on Daniel Island.

President Obama has had a complicated history working with congressional Republicans, but is part of his agenda the ultimate failure of his political opposition? That was what both Bill O’Reilly and Charles Krauthammer contended tonight, with O’Reilly attributing it more to a cultural shift in the United States, while Krauthammer argued Obama’s advantage is more a consequence of winning an election. (Snip) O’Reilly said that Obama is far more interested in scoring political points by damaging the GOP than solving the nation’s problems. Krauthammer argued that has been his modus operandi for the past few years, particularly

Mark Sanford, the three-term congressman and two-term South Carolina governor, is preparing his political comeback, running for the House in the district recently represented by Tim Scott. Sanford garnered national headlines in 2009 as the first governor to turn down President Obama’s stimulus funds — and then made even bigger headlines later in the year when it was revealed that he had departed the state to fly to Argentina to meet with his mistress. A messy divorce followed; a state legislative ad hoc committee voted to censure but not impeach him. He served out the remainder of his term,

Only the people of Israel can decide who will represent their best interests, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday in remarks directed at US President Barack Obama a week before a general election. "I think everyone knows that the citizens of Israel are the only ones who can decide who will faithfully represent the vital interests of the state," he said. His remarks came in response to an article by prominent Bloomberg columnist Jeffrey Goldberg in which he quoted Obama as saying repeatedly: "Israel doesn´t know what its own best interests are." In an interview with Newsmax, former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III, who served under President Reagan, says President Obama could be impeached by Congress if he enacted gun control through executive order. MEESE: It should be remembered that the president cannot by executive order do things that affects the public at large unless there is some Congressional basis for it. In other words, some Congressional authority he has been given. An executive order without specific Congressional authority can only apply to those portions of the government that are under his control. In their words, the executive branch.

The CEO of Whole Foods Market said President Obama´s healthcare law is more like "fascism" than "socialism," a parallel he drew in 2009, to some backlash. John Mackey made the remark in an interview Wednesday with NPR. "Technically speaking, it´s more like fascism," Mackey said of the Affordable Care Act. "Socialism is where the government owns the means of production. In fascism, the government doesn´t own the means of production, but they do control it, and that´s what´s happening with our healthcare programs and these reforms." The term "fascism" was first used to describe the right-wing regime of Italian

The move will be his first ballot test among Republicans and other voters since the final months of his term as governor were overshadowed by his affair with an Argentine woman, now his fiancee. The killing of Osama bin Laden was touted as the beginning of the end of Al Qaeda (the term "war on terror" having long since been abandoned). Yet as the nation´s capital prepares for President Barack Obama´s second inauguration, Al Qaeda is opening new fronts, including ground assaults on French forces in Mali and, today, the kidnapping of foreign workers at a natural gas facility in Algeria, which borders Mali to the north. French troops are preparing to fight Islamist guerillas in northern Mali, which has been turned into a virtual Al Qaeda state following the
