Newark — The jobs of 34 Star-Ledger employees — including nearly 10 percent of the newsroom — are being eliminated in the first large-scale layoffs in the history of the state’s largest daily newspaper, publisher Richard Vezza said this morning. Eighteen part- and full-time staffers in The Star-Ledger´s newsroom of 195 employees are expected to be laid off today, along with 16 positions in other departments. The totals include 19 full-time employees and 15 part-time positions. In a letter posted shortly after 8 a.m. today throughout the newspaper´s Newark offices, Vezza called it a difficult day,

Pennsylvania gun owners threatened to boycott the state´s largest hunting and fishing expo Tuesday after organizers announced that they would ban the display and sale of assault rifles at this year´s show. Reed Exhibitions, a British-based company that runs the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg each February, notified vendors of the change in policy over the last several days, a company representative confirmed to The Inquirer. The presence of so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazines might have served as "a distraction" from other aspects of the event in the wake of the recent school shootings

Politics: President Obama threatened Social Security checks would be delayed if Congress didn´t play ball on the debt ceiling. Once again, he turned pensions into a political football. There are ways to stop this. Americans should know: Social Security payments won´t be affected by debt-ceiling talks, and Obama knows it. Still, it´s not as if the Social Security system is healthy. In a Page 1 story Monday, IBD´s Jed Graham reported that 2013 marks the first year new Social Security retirees will outlive the trust fund. Their benefits will be slashed 25% as the system goes bust in 2033.

This from the technical chartists at RBS, for those who like entrails and soothsaying. [Snip][ Wall Street is at a key juncture. If the S&P does not push through this line, it is likely to break down for a while. They predict a reversal. There are plenty of triggers. The US is going into a Triple Witching Month in March: the federal government shutdown, the debt-ceiling, and the spending cuts from sequester. A nasty brew. On the other hand, look at the US money supply in this chart from Paul Ashworth at Capital Economics:

Despite Obama´s promise to cut unnecessary regulations, his administration issued $236.7 billion in new rules in 2012. According to a report by the American Action Forum, headed by former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the direct costs of the regulations force American businesses to waste 87 million man-hours to fill out regulatory paperwork. Adding Obama´s 2012 regulatory costs to that of the rest of his first term adds up to a total of $518 billion in new costs forced onto an already anemic economic recovery. This onslaught of new regulations comes even after Obama was

If you’re into good government, the advantage of having wealthy Senators or cabinet members is that they might be less likely to position themselves for a big K Street cashout afterwards. The disadvantage: wealthy people have many, large, diverse investments, thus creating many conflicts of interest. Senator and Secretary of State nominee John Kerry, for instance, owns shares in a Canadian company standing to profit from construction of the Keystone Pipeline, in many green-energy companies that could profit from global climate-change agreements, and in Brazilian oil giant Petrobras, which receives U.S. subsidies. Human beings are almost universally receptive to impartial facts, and people will therefore support any course of action that is inherently right and effective. If the truth were on the side of the enemies of the Second Amendment, they would not need to lie to the public along with fellow members of Congress. The Brady Campaign has a long track record of using distorted statistics to deceive the American people, including well-meaning donors

What does one do when confronted with the mandatory task of negotiating a deal with someone who is demonstrably dishonest, driven solely by ego and only interested in embarrassing you? You don´t negotiate with them. You place your best offer offer on the table and walk away leaving the decision to accept or refuse in the hands of your adversary. The Republicans in the House are now in that circumstance regarding raising the debt ceiling.

Presidency: "I´m a pretty friendly guy," President Obama said after suggesting Republicans plan to contaminate food, crash planes and let terrorists build nuclear bombs. "Friendly"? Not the word that comes to mind. ´If congressional Republicans refuse to pay America´s bills on time, Social Security checks and veterans´ benefits will be delayed," President Obama claimed at his much-ballyhooed "Final Press Conference of His First Term" on Tuesday."We might not be able to pay our troops," Obama warned. The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg has an eye-opening piece for Bloomberg that reveals in stark terms what President Obama really thinks of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as Israel itself. As The Telegraph’s Middle East correspondent Robert Tait reports: The damning assessment of the Israeli prime minister, relayed by senior White House officials to an American journalist, Jeffrey Goldberg, is the most graphic sign yet of the toxic relationship between the two men, who have clashed continually over the stalled Middle East peace process.

Wondering if the administration is "against senseless violence and slaughter, or it isn´t," People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is making an 11th hour pitch to President Obama to include a hunting ban in his gun control measures to be unveiled Wednesday. "Americans´ views are evolving on many issues, from same-sex marriage to gun control, and the time is right to reconsider the dangerous message that the practice of killing animals for fun is acceptable and should even be protected," Tracy Reiman, PETA´s executive vice president said in a letter to Obama.

The president of the United States will release a binder full of new gun-control executive orders on Wednesday. Instead of standing alone, bearing full responsibility for the imperial actions he is about to take, President Obama will surround himself with an audience of kids who wrote to him after the Newtown, Conn., school massacre. This is the most cynical in Beltway theatrical staging — a feckless attempt to invoke "For the Children" immunity by hiding behind them. What has happened to the deliberative process in this country? Public debate in Washington has deteriorated into Sesame Street sing-alongs.

President Barack Obama’s deputies have quadrupled the number of signatures that petitioners on the administration’s “We the People” website must collect to get an official response from the White House, following a series of popular, provocative and disrespectful signature drives by his critics. Some of the petitions sought approval for states to secede after Obama’s re-election, while others called on the White House to disavow executive orders that restrict gun rights, or to deport CNN’s British-born, progressive host Piers Morgan.

President Barack Obama’s spokesman is downplaying venomously anti-Semitic statements by Egypt’s new Islamist president, who said that Jews are “apes and pigs” and must be hated by Muslim children. Egypt’s president, Mohammed Morsi, “has demonstrated in word and deed his commitment to Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel. … He obviously worked with us to resolve … a ceasefire … — in the Gaza conflict last year,” spokesman Jay Carney said during the Jan. 15 White House press conference. U.S. policy is focused on Morsi’s actions, not words, Carney said.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Monday, said the federal government should stop deporting "non-serious criminal" aliens as a means of making the nation safer. "It is time to put an end to the practice of deporting non-serious criminals," said Villaraigosa. "Our neighborhoods will be safer and our families will be more secure. "Now this is an ambitious agenda," he said. "But immigration reform cannot wait another political season. Already we’re hearing the voices of those who did not learn the lessons of November or who

Conservative talkers Mark “the Hysteric” Levin and “fat ass” Michael Savage reignited their longtime feud this week, even though the two share distributors and no longer air during the same time slot. On Monday, Levin made an appearance on the Fox News Channel and called President Barack Obama “the imperial president,” leading Savage to label Levin “the Hysteric” on his show later that evening. Savage said Levin lazily and uncritically stole the phrase “imperial president” from liberals of the 1970s. “The ‘imperial presidency’ was a line used by liberals to describe Nixon,” Savage bellowed.

President Obama has settled on a political communications strategy for his final term that begins Sunday: Talk about admirable aspirations, ignore the nation´s economic realities, keep everyone fighting amongst themselves over anything at hand while calmly deploring all the disputes, rancor and chaos this president has helped to engineer. Such stunning cynicism has actually worked pretty well for the Real Good Talker this past year. Michelle Obama is expected to spend her second term in the White House as a champion of the same issues she advocated for in her first, but with an added twist — the first lady could become the most prominent female figure in her husband’s administration. With Hillary Clinton leaving the State Department — and no high-profile woman replacing her or other departing Cabinet members — Michelle Obama, known for her commitment to health and her chic fashion style, is entrenched as the most famous woman in the administration. Her rise comes at a time

Seven others were wounded in the attack, including two foreigners, added the state news agency. Ireland has announced that one of the hostages is Irish. Algerian forces caught up with and surrounded the kidnappers and negotiations for the release of the hostages are ongoing, the Algerian official said.
