Brewer´s Price

Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona has an interesting take on Obamacare: “I hate it — now give me the money.” Governor Brewer, exemplifying that unfortunately common strain of Republican leadership that is uncompromising in rhetoric but opportunistic in reality, has decided to sign off on the federal government’s plan to radically expand Medicaid eligibility, replacing various eligibility formulas developed by the states with a uniform standard encompassing everybody earning 133 percent of the poverty line or less. She calculates that Arizona stands to gain some $2 billion a year in Medicaid benefits at little cost to the state treasury:

Lawsuits will $tick it

Lance Armstrong should expect a wave of costly lawsuits in the wake of his doping admission. The government of South Australia became the latest potential plaintiff to hint at legal action against the disgraced cycling champ, who confessed to Oprah Winfrey, in interviews airing tomorrow and Friday, of using banned performance-enhancing drugs. Armstrong took several million dollars in appearance fees from the Australian state to promote the Tour Down Under cycle race from 2009 to 2011, Premier Jay Weatherill said yesterday.

Small Business Hates
Obama´s Washington

President Obama, take note. Small business owners think Washington has become increasingly hostile in recent years to free enterprise and thus to job creation, a survey conducted last week found. And his policies are part of the problem. Sixty percent of small business owners said the president’s health care program will have a “negative impact” on their businesses this year. This includes owners of businesses who are Democrats (53 percent), independents (79 percent) and Republicans (79 percent).

Here is my nomination for the lowest moment of the “fiscal cliff” debate. Right before Christmas, President Obama met with House Speaker John Boehner in the Oval Office. “He told Mr. Boehner,” according to the Wall Street Journal, “that if the sides didn’t reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country Republicans were at fault.” Forget Thomas Jefferson’s First Inaugural: “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.” Forget Abraham Lincoln’s Second: “With malice toward none.” Obama’s Second Inaugural might drop a few choice one-liners on the elected Republicans

There is a popular new TV show in Kabul. It’s called, “2014.” Guests surmise how bad things could get after NATO departs. The program epitomizes the mood I found after three weeks in Afghanistan, confirmed and reconfirmed by numerous conversations in Herat, Kandahar and Kunduz. Afghans described “a dark horizon” ahead. More important, they question why the United States is abandoning them. Most believed that with the U.S. alongside—meaning some thousand troops, not tens of thousands—their country stands a chance.

I t´s a great big universe, and we´re all really puny. Yes, humankind is probably even more insignificant than we ever could have imagined, thanks to new findings from a team of astronomers in the U.K. For the odd-looking heptagon structure seen here represents the largest observable object in the known universe. The Huge-LQG (Large Quasar Group), as it´s been dubbed, is a grouping of 73 quasars, or galactic nuclei — which are all thought to have been at the heart of their own respective galaxies at one point — and stretches 4 billion light years across its longest axis.

Obama ends term with fewer

President Barack Obama had fewer press conferences during his first term than George W. Bush, Bill Clinton or George H.W. Bush. Presidential scholar Martha Joynt Kumar did the math and found that with Monday´s conference, Obama has done a total of 79 over four years. That´s 10 fewer than George W. Bush, 54 fewer than Clinton and 63 fewer than George H.W. Bush. He did manage to beat out former President Ronald Reagan, who had only 27 press conferences during his first term, although many of those were evening conferences carried live during prime time across the nation.

Last we heard of Lisa P. Jackson, she was exiting the administration for new challenges and time with family or something. Her resignation came just weeks before a court-imposed deadline for the EPA to release some 12,000 e-mails associated with her alias e-mail account under the name “Richard Windsor.” Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Chris Horner stumbled on the Windsor account while perusing documents he’d FOIAed while doing research for his book, ” The Liberal War on Transparency.” Horner and CEI sued EPA for access to Windsor/Jackson’s e-mails, which were otherwise quite easily shielded from FOIA requests for Lisa P. Jackson’s e-mails.

A Japanese airline has grounded all 17 of its Boeing 787 planes for inspection after one of its Dreamliners was forced to make an emergency landing. All Nippon Airways said a cockpit message showed battery problems during a domestic flight today, but all passengers and crew evacuated safely following the emergency landing. The incident is the latest of a number of recent problems with Boeing´s new Dreamliner aircraft. The sophisticated new plane, the world´s first mainly carbon-composite airliner, suffered two fuel leaks, a battery fire, a wiring problem, brake computer glitch and cracked cockpit window last week.

There is no question that liberals do an impressive job of expressing concern for blacks. But do the intentions expressed in their words match the actual consequences of their deeds? San Francisco is a classic example of a city unexcelled in its liberalism. But the black population of San Francisco today is less than half of what it was back in 1970, even though the city’s total population has grown. Severe restrictions on building housing in San Francisco have driven rents and home prices so high that blacks and other people with low or moderate incomes have

Washington — The approval late Tuesday of a $50.6 billion Sandy aid package in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives raised hopes among its supporters that federal money would begin flowing into storm-battered New Jersey within months. Just how quickly that will happen, however, was not immediately clear late Tuesday, after the House approved the measure with a 241-180 vote that exposed painful divisions among Republicans. Officials said the Senate is expected to approve the measure next week and send it to President Obama for his signature as Memorial Day — and the start of the lucrative summer season at

Elsewhere in the letter, Mueller touched on the key problem American citizens are now facing, as gun-grabbers use the crimes of a few to justify taking away the liberties of many: We are Americans. We must not allow, nor will we tolerate, the actions of criminals

The National Rifle Association released a new video on its Web site Tuesday calling President Obama an “elitist hypocrite” for having Secret Service protection of his daughters at school but saying he was “skeptical” about installing armed guards in all schools. The NRA’s provocative, 35-second video is as harsh as any attack ad in a political campaign and illustrates how emotionally charged and personal the debate over gun control is becoming. “Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” a deep-voiced narrator asks. “Then why is he skeptical

President Obama on Wednesday will formally announce the most aggressive and expansive national gun-control agenda in generations as he presses Congress to mandate background checks for all firearm buyers and prohibit assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips. The announcement will set off a fierce confrontation with Congress over an issue that has riven American society for decades. Obama’s far-reaching firearms agenda has at best tepid support from his party leaders and puts him at loggerheads with Democratic centrists.

The reviewing stands are up, the buildings festooned with bunting. But on the eve of President Obama’s second inauguration, Washington’s mood feels more somber than celebratory, even for those who wanted to see Obama reelected. The thrill of 2008 has yielded to the frustration of 2012. This inauguration represents the triumph of experience over hope. Perhaps the sense of letdown is unavoidable. The second time is never as exciting. A presidency on the doorstep of a first term is promise unmarred by performance. A reelected president arrives with baggage and scars

The one-hour program would have featured Atlanta rap artist Shawty Lo, his children and their mothers. It was expected to air later this year on Oxygen,
