Boston - The U.S. House of Representatives has shut out Northeast fishermen from any emergency aid in its pending disaster relief bill. The Republican-led House advanced its Superstorm Sandy relief bill Monday without voting on amendments that would have inserted between $116 million and $150 million in fishing industry funding. Massachusetts Rep. John Tierney called the decision "callous and outrageous." Northeast fishermen became eligible for federal aid last year after a national fishery disaster was declared in the region, due to the slow recovery of fish stocks.

There are a few things worth knowing about revolutions. Most people don’t participate in them, even if the history books often make it seem otherwise. Revolutions are thought up by small groups of people who then make it everyone’s business. Or alternately they don’t. And those are the revolutions that never happen. Most people, at any given time and place, are dissatisfied with the government and believe, rightly, that whoever is in charge is guilty of stealing from them, oppressing them and making it impossible for them to live their lives in peace Content added by staff

Minneapolis - The U.S. central bank should keep interest rates low until the jobless rate is a more "normal" 5.5 percent, a top Federal Reserve official said on Tuesday, in one of the strongest calls yet from a Fed policymaker for more monetary easing. "I do think that it´s important for the public to know that the Fed is going to stay in an accommodative stance until the economy is much closer to being what one might consider normal," Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Narayana Kocherlakota told reporters. "And I think 6.5 percent unemployment, I think that would still be too high to be

Chuck Hagel is moving to assuage concerns raised by pro-Israel Democrats over his nomination as defense secretary, laying out a hawkish posture toward Iran and Hezbollah and apologizing for characterizing powerful activists as the “Jewish lobby.” In a letter to California Sen. Barbara Boxer, a Jewish Democrat, Hagel said he fully supports unilateral sanctions on Iran and condemned Hezbollah as a terrorist threat to Israel. He called it “a very poor choice of words” when he referred in a 2006 interview that the “Jewish lobby” tends to “intimidate” lawmakers, saying he understands how such words “can be construed as anti-Israel.”

It’s not often an ex-senator gets a shot at his old job just months after losing. So Scott Brown is widely expected to jump at the chance, running in a special election for John Kerry’s seat that presumably will become vacant within weeks. But there are compelling reasons for Brown to pass on what would be his third Senate campaign in four years — and he’s thinking long and hard about them. Topping the list: In 2014, he could run instead for Massachusetts governor, a job that Republicans have had much more success winning and keeping, as Mitt Romney can attest.

If the government fails to enact structural reforms in spending, an entirely new source of revenue will be needed. The most likely one is a value-added tax that would crush the middle class. You can´t blame middle-income Americans for wondering whether the new "fiscal cliff" deal really protects them from big tax increases in the future. That´s essentially what President Obama promised in championing the hike in rates for high-earners signed into law on January 2. Still, the politicians and pundits keep talking about how our steep deficits and mountainous debt will rise

New York — Police in New York City plan to combat the theft of painkillers and other highly addictive prescription medicines by asking pharmacies around the city to hide fake pill bottles fitted with GPS devices amid the legitimate supplies on their shelves. The New York Police Department believes the so-called "bait bottles" could help investigators track stolen drugs and locate suspects. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is expected to unveil the plan Tuesday at a La Quinta, Calif., conference on health issues hosted by former President Bill Clinton´s foundation. In prepared remarks provided in advance of his appearance, Kelly says

An on-again, off-again move by the Obama administration to scrap the federal gas tax in favor of a pay-per-mile fee would boost the tab to Americans as high as 250 percent, raising their current tax of 18.4 cents a gallon to as high as 46 cents, according to a new government study. But without a tax increase, said the Government Accountability Office study, the government´s highway fund is going to go dry. One reason the fund is going broke: President Obama´s push for fuel efficient cars has resulted in better mileage, and fewer stops at the pump.

Plug-in power meets traditional American luxury today as General Motors reveals its Cadillac ELR, a battery-driven coupe based on the same technology in the Chevrolet Volt. GM´s investment in the Volt, estimated at more than $1 billion, will now include the iconic luxury brand. The unveiling is scheduled for 10:05 a.m. at the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center. The ELR catapults GM into direct competition with luxury electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model S and Fisker Karma. It could also lure environmentally conscious luxury buyers who have previously favored Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
