Meet the softball: David
Gregory and Colin Powell
Washington Post, by Jennifer Rubin    Original Article

“Meet the Press” isn’t what it used to be. After a remarkably softball interview with President Obama on New Year’s Day, moderator David Gregory on Sunday let former secretary of state Colin Powell filibuster through one question after another, never following up or, as they used to do in the good old days, confronting the interviewee with statements that directly contradict his spin.(Snip) Powell asserted that Chuck Hagel is “superbly qualified” to be defense secretary. Umm. You would think an interviewer would ask: But doesn’t he lack executive experience? Wouldn’t someone interested in

Former US Vice President and still fully devoted global environmentalist Al Gore last week took a lot of heat and ridicule for dumping his viewer-starved Current TV cable network for $500 million. He sold it to Al Jazeera, owned by the oil-rich Islamic monarchy and global environment-polluter Qatar. Gore’s money-first hypocrisy in this matter is so self-evident that it’s hardly worth further ink. For $500 million he chose to fasten a “Kick Me” sign to both his back and front. At least he didn’t go for cheap, ya know? But there has been an important element to

Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman threatened Monday afternoon that he would file articles of impeachment against President Barack Obama if he institutes gun control measures with an executive order. Stockman warned that such executive orders would be “unconstitutional” and “infringe on our constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms.” “I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment,” Stockman said in a statement.

Obama to Congress: If

The president was given a list of recommendations on Monday, addressing how to make mass shootings less likely. The list was developed by Vice President Biden. One idea is banning assault weapons of the kind used in Newtown and in the Colorado movie theater massacre. The president said Monday he doesn´t know if Congress will reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 after 10 years on the books. And it´s unclear how hard Mr. Obama will fight for that ban -- politics may argue against it. However, at a press conference, Mr. Obama said lawmakers will have to

Colin Powell thinks Chuck Hagel´s use of the term "Jewish lobby" was an innocent mistake, for which he should atone by writing "Israel lobby" 100 times on a blackboard. "That term slips out from time to time," the former secretary of state told David Gregory on Sunday´s "Meet the Press." Mr. Powell also thinks that when Mr. Hagel´s critics "go over the edge and say because Chuck said ´Jewish lobby,´ he is anti-Semitic, that´s disgraceful. We shouldn´t have that kind of language in our dialogue." OK, I get it. An errant slip of the tongue isn´t proof of prejudice.

Charity´s Unseen Benefit: It Protects

Charities and other nonprofit institutions perform a vast array of altruistic works yielding benefits for both the direct beneficiaries and for society writ large. Most such activities are obvious: medical services for the indigent, educational services for the disadvantaged, support for the arts, and the like. But such organizations serve a deeper function as well: They act as an important buffer between the citizenry and the state. Government by its very nature is coercive: Tax, spending and regulatory policies inexorably generate wealth transfers among groups, thus creating winners and losers.

If there´s anything that sums up the brokenness of America´s political class, it is the recent fiscal cliff fiasco. After all the sound and fury, we´ve ended up with yet another refusal to make the hard choices concerning how the U.S. disciplines its apparently insatiable appetite for public spending. In a way, however, the fiscal cliff circus was always a side-show to the main game. And this is the deeper existential problem that many Western European nations have long failed to master, but which America also now seems unable to address.

Barack Obama is set to make a new push for immigration reform - and hopes to solve a number of tricky issues at once. The U.S. President plans to introduce a comprehensive reform bill which will enable illegal immigrants to earn citizenship, attract highly skilled workers and establish a guest-worker programme for temporary immigrants. The immigration agenda represents a significant political risk for Mr Obama, who is also battling with Congress over gun control and fiscal policy. However, the President may seek to demonstrate the importance of the issue by featuring it as a key part of his State of

The Obama administration issued $236 billion worth of new regulations last year, according to a report from a conservative think tank. The analysis from the American Action Forum, led by former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, found that the administration added $216 billion in rules and more than $20 billion in regulatory proposals in 2012. Complying with those rules will require an additional 87 million hours of paperwork, the report said. The group put the total price tag from regulations during Obama’s first term at more than $518 billion.

It feels strange visiting a country like Morocco and listening to people extol the virtues of a political system my country waged a revolution against. Morocco has a king, and he’s a real one too, not some kind of a figurehead. But I went there, I listened, and after almost ten years of visiting Middle Eastern countries wracked by tyranny, terrorism, botched revolutions, and wars, I was perhaps a bit more willing to hear what they had to say than I might have been a decade ago. A monarchy is a tough sell for Americans.

Obama gave a press conference today that displayed some of the most controversial features of his governing style. The big issue was raising the debt ceiling. It’s traditional for President and Congress to muscle their way through the ubiquitous rise crisis, hammering out some agreement to limit future spending that will kick the can further down the road. But this time, Obama refuses even to talk (and he calls his position "reasonable"). Whereas the Republicans want to debate spending and then lift the ceiling, Obama wants to lift the ceiling first and debate spending later. “We are not a

You need to make sure that you are paying to care for our veterans.’ They lay all this out for me, and--because they have the spending power

President Barack Obama said Monday he would take some unilateral executive action pertaining to gun control, following up on proposals that will be put forward by a group headed by Vice President Joe Biden. After the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in December, Obama named Vice President Joe Biden to lead a task force to present proposals for gun control. Biden, who met with House members on Monday about guns, has said he would give his recommendations to Obama by Tuesday. “My understanding is the vice president is going to provide a range of steps

"We´re going to be announcing the first step in the globalization of Jeep (in China). There´s another one that´s going to come in Russia.

Iran is on track to be able to produce material for at least one nuclear bomb by mid-2014 as sanctions hit its economy but fail to stop the atomic program, a US think tank said Monday. The Institute for Science and International Security, a private group opposed to nuclear proliferation, called for tougher US economic sanctions against Iran and pressure on major trading partners to isolate Tehran. The group looked at Iran´s "critical capability," defined as the point at which the clerical regime will be able to produce enough weapons-grade uranium or separated plutonium to build one or

Our hero is David Coleman, president of the College Board, a Rhodes Scholar, and a former McKinsey & Company consultant. Coleman used a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to mold the requirements for the Common Core States Standards in English -- adopted by 46 states to be implemented in 2014 -- to mandate that 50% of reading assignments are non-fiction "informational text" in elementary school, and 70 percent by grade 12.

A group of about 10 close friends and advisers to Armstrong left a downtown Austin hotel about three hours after they arrived Monday afternoon. Earlier Monday, Armstrong stopped at his

A pretty, young, auburn-haired woman – mid-20s – drove down a lonely country road somewhere in Oklahoma. Appearing in her rearview mirror, at the back windshield, were two menacing orbs of light floating amid ashen dusk. The guttural roar of a souped-up big block shook the tiny Volkswagen Rabbit as a van-load of inbred thugs lurched left and drew alongside her. A ponytailed passenger taunted inaudibly and blew foul kisses between crude hand gestures. He pointed for her to pull over as the van repeatedly swerved dangerously close. Inside the car a man, asleep in the reclining passenger seat,

Jennifer Rubin does a nice take-down here of the increasingly despicable Colin Powell, who smeared his former party on Meet the Press by accusing Republicans of a “dark vein of intolerance.” Thus says the first black Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, the first black Secretary of State, the sometime mentor of the first black woman to serve as Secretary of State… all under Republican sponsorship. Thus says the back-stabbing lout who deliberately let the innocent Scooter Libby twist in the wind, and then get convicted, when one word from Powell would have ended the investigation.

As the Marist poll from the Knights of Columbus suggests, most Americans are not joining Andrew Cuomo’s rallying cry for expanding abortion access, a priority of his administration this year. Most Americans, I suspect would be horrified if they realized 41 percent of children in New York City are aborted. When New Yorkers were polled about that in 2011, even 57 percent of pro-choice women thought the rate too high. Greg Pfundstein, president of the Chiaroscuro Foundation, which commissioned that poll, put it well last week: “New York’s abortion regime is among the most liberal on planet Earth
