Sen. Charles Schumer says retailers that sell assault weapons should stop offering them for purchase while Congress discusses gun regulation legislation. Schumer on Sunday released a letter he sent to major retailers asking for a voluntary moratorium. The New York Democrat says consumer demand for guns has gone up in the weeks since the December mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

At a speech before the Conusmer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 9, Bill Clinton stated: “Half of all mass killings in the United States have occurred since the assault weapon ban expired in 2005, half in the history of the country.” But that statement is untrue, as Glenn Kessler of the Washngton Post demonstrates. Asked by Kessler about his statement, Clinton’s spokesman declined to comment or to say where Clinton got his numbers. As Kessler, a professional fact-checker, says, “this always makes us suspicous.” It seems clear that Clinton

BAMAKO, Mali — French fighter jets bombed rebel targets in a major city in Mali´s north Sunday, pounding the airport as well as training camps, warehouses and buildings used by the al-Qaida-linked Islamists controlling the area, officials and residents said. The three-day-old French-led effort to take back Mali´s north from the extremists began with airstrikes by combat helicopters in the small town of Konna. It has grown to a coordinated attack by state-of-the-art fighter jets which have bombarded

President Obama ordered U.S. forces to support French troops in a failed mission to rescue a hostage in Somalia, Mr. Obama notified Congress on Sunday. At least once French soldier was killed during the operation Friday. The president said U.S. combat aircraft “briefly entered Somali airspace” to support the operation Friday. “These aircraft did not employ weapons during the operation,” Mr. Obama said. Mr. Obama said he directed U.S. forces to participate in the mission because it furthered “national security interests.” In 1993, U.S. special forces hunting

Pentagon begins campaign to

The Pentagon has begun a campaign to rebut what it calls “myths” about Defense Secretary-designate Chuck Hagel and is sending to senators documents purporting to show that he is pro-Israel and tough on Iran. The papers — one of which is titled “Chuck Hagel’s Record: Myths and Facts” — kick off what is expected to be a strong lobbying effort by the Obama administration and liberal groups to win Mr. Hagel’s confirmation by the Senate Armed Services Committee and then the full Senate. Republicans have voiced opposition, principally because of his statements about those two countries

Sen. Chris Murphy on Sunday said there is growing momentum in Congress for a ban on so-called assault weapons, saying lawmakers’ attitudes toward gun control have changed significantly in the wake of last month’s shooting rampage in Newtown, Conn. “This issue is going to continue to move,” Mr. Murphy, Connecticut Democrat, said on CNN’s “State of the Union. “I do think that even in the Democratic caucus you see members like [Sens.] Joe Manchin and Mark Warner who previously probably never would have considered

In selecting Jack Lew, the White House chief of staff, to replace Timothy Geithner as Treasury secretary, President Obama has sent some not-so-subtle messages: The Treasury’s autonomy will be curbed; the president doesn’t much fear another financial crisis (otherwise, his nominee might have more financial-market experience); and the president isn’t conciliating his Republican and business critics (otherwise, his nominee would be less partisan). In many ways, the choice of Lew makes perfect sense

Hagel’s Cuba problem

Much of the focus on Chuck Hagel’s record has been on his views on Israel, Iran and sequestration. Equally troubling to those who have taken a forceful stand against Castro’s dictatorship in Cuba, however, has been his dismissive attitude toward the Castros and his enthusiasm to end the U.S. embargo with no quid pro quo. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has already expressed serious concerns about Hagel’s views on Cuba. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), former chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and now chairman of the Middle East and North Africa subcommittee, put out a statement

Former secretary of state Colin Powell emerged this morning to voice his support for Chuck Hagel’s nomination as secretary of defense. Powell characterized Hagel as a strong supporter of Israel, a move that surely anticipates Hagel’s own in his confirmation hearing. In defending Hagel’s pro-Israel credentials and dismissing the significance of Hagel’s now-infamous reference to the “Jewish lobby,” Powell offered a revealing response. “That term slips out from time to time,” he told NBC’s David Gregory.

A New York public school teacher who advised a school Bible Study club has filed a civil rights lawsuit against her school district after she was forced to remove all religious content from her classroom — including a quote from former President Ronald Reagan. Joelle Silver, a veteran teacher in the Cheektowaga Central School District in western New York, said she received a “counseling letter” signed by her superintendent that ordered her to remove all religious-themed items from her classroom or else she could be fired. President Obama informed Congress Sunday evening that U.S. forces were present in Somalia on Friday for a French raid to rescue a hostage from al-Shabaab. The attempt to rescue the intelligence officer who had been held by the terrorist group for three years went very wrong, though. One French commando was killed in the operation and another is missing. Al-Shabaab claimed that the commando is now their hostage. And French army consultant Denis Allex, the pseudonym for the intelligence officer, is presumed dead. “Extremely violent fights took place

SANTA FE, N.M. — In 2010, New Mexico´s Susana Martinez made history, being elected the nation´s first Latina governor. Since November, she´s made waves, criticizing Mitt Romney for the harsh rhetoric of his presidential campaign and chiding fellow Republicans for actions that, she says, have needlessly estranged Latinos from the GOP. "We have to make sure that as Republicans we don´t just visit Latinos during election time, but that we make them part of the solution," Martinez said in an interview. "It´s extremely important that we elect people that look like the population they serve." Martinez is a strong favorite

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown proclaimed last week that California, which now has enough cash to pay its day-to-day bills, can no longer be described by naysayers as a "failed state." But even though it appears to be free of the deficit that dogged the Capitol in recent years, the state is no model of financial health. Sacramento is legally obligated to pay many billions of dollars withheld from schools, local governments and healthcare providers as lawmakers struggled repeatedly to balance the books. It owes Wall Street more per resident than almost every other state.

A rush on flu shots sparked by Gov. Cuomo’s health emergency declaration has left some city pharmacies and urgent care facilities empty handed. “We ran out,” said Dr. Mark Melrose, an emergency physician and owner of Urgent Care Manhattan on Amsterdam Ave. on the upper West Side. Melrose said his supply went dry Saturday after doling out 10 times the normal number of flu shots to victims of the coughing—sneezing-head-feverish epidemic sweeping the nation. “We ordered a bunch that was supposed to be here. I think we gave out between 20 to 30 vaccines before we ran out,” said Melrose

U.S. military combat aircraft "briefly entered" the airspace of Somalia Friday in support of a French-led rescue mission, President Barack Obama told Congress in a letter Sunday. On Friday, French troops mounted an unsuccessful attempt to rescue a French national reported to be a French intelligence service agent captured in Somalia in 2009. The agent, believed to be held by the Islamic group Al-Shabaab, was reportedly killed in the raid, as was a French soldier. Obama´s letter does not mention the result of the military action in the farming village of Bulomarer on the Somali coast and describes the U.S.

CNN, in an attempt to frame the gun debate as rational gun control advocates versus wild-eyed gun owners, posted two clips edited from the Ben Shapiro—Piers Moran wipeout, while at the same time posting the entire two-segment interview Morgan did with Alex Jones. This is by design; to many, Jones left an impression of a wild-eyed fanatic who couldn’t have a rational discussion, which made Morgan seem as though he represented the rational side of the argument. Shapiro, on the other hand, was even lauded by the Obama mouthpiece Washington Post as “a foe of extraordinary polemical agility.”

An armed mob set out into the Florida Everglades on Saturday to flush out a scaly invader. It sounds like the second act of a sci-fi horror flick but, really, it´s pretty much Florida´s plan for dealing with an infestation of Burmese pythons that are eating their way through a fragile ecosystem. Nearly 800 people signed up for the month-long ´Python Challenge´ that started Saturday afternoon. The vast majority - 749 - are members of the general public who lack the permits usually required to harvest pythons on public lands.

LOS ANGELES — Sunday dawned crisp and clear here, with wintry (for Southern California) temperatures lingering in the 40s and 50s. But the rhetoric was already hot, as Hollywood got ready for a Golden Globes ceremony at which the table talk — if not the stage banter — almost inevitably will turn to the political flare-up around “Zero Dark Thirty.” “I would like to condemn the movie” for making it appear that torture was effective in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, Ed Asner said in a telephone interview on Sunday morning. Mr. Asner said he
