The federal Government has sent an air force technical team and the commander of a planned African-led force to Mali to assist the country’s military as it battles Islamists, a presidency spokesman said Saturday. The confirmation of Nigerian military personnel on the ground comes after French air power helped Mali mount an offensive against the Islamists who control the country’s north and who have been seeking to push further south. However, it was not yet clear when a planned 3,000-strong African-led force could be sent despite 15-nation west African bloc ECOWAS giving its go-ahead on

If Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) lets the Al Jazeera-Al Gore deal go through without scrutiny, then every broadcast entity or communications facility in America is ripe for the plucking by any of our nation’s enemies and adversaries. For those who haven’t been paying attention lately, the government of Qatar has announced a deal through Al Jazeera with former Democratic Vice President Al Gore for his Current TV cable channel, in order to transform it into an arm of its Jihadist or “Terror TV” network, once known as a mouthpiece for mass

WASHINGTON - Americans are beginning to feel the pinch from Washington´s decision to embrace austerity measures aimed at bringing down the nation´s budget deficit. Paychecks across the country have shrunk over the last week due to higher federal tax rates, and workers are already cutting back on spending, which will drag on the economy this year. In Warren, Rhode Island, Ben DeCastro got his first paycheck on Friday in which taxes on his wages rose by 2 percentage points. That works out to about $30 a week. "You sit back and do the calculation, and that´s $30

Everybody knows a Walt Kowalski. He is the grizzled Korean War veteran Clint Eastwood played in the movie Gran Torino. A man who spends his days sitting on the porch, keeping his house and yard immaculate, satisfied to drink his cheap beer while watching his neighborhood and country go to hell around him. (Snip) Both of these men are fictional characters, but is it just fantasy? Let us look back at Samuel Whittemore. Samuel was an old man -- seventy-eight years old, to be exact -- on April 19, 1775. Defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel’s Atlantic Council predicted that Iran will one day be a natural partner for the United States and has prepared a roadmap to achieve that partnership. Hagel was named chairman of the nonprofit Atlantic Council just one month after he left the Senate. The Atlantic Council produced a major analytic policy compendium on U.S.-Iranian relations under Hagel’s leadership. Although he did not pen the report, it aligns with Hagel’s positions that the U.S. should engage directly with Iran and scale back economic sanctions. The report asserts that the inconsistent history of United States

The wife of ex-Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned Friday from her Chicago alderman post, saying she cannot adequately represent her ward while dealing with "very painful family health matters." Alderwoman Sandi Jackson’s letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel doesn’t include specifics, but it follows her husband’s recent resignation from Congress in which he cited mental-health problems and a federal investigation. The first indication of Jackson’s metal-health problems occurred in June when the 10-term congressman unexpectedly left Capitol Hill.

But a social media outcry can and has gotten him to release a repeat lawbreaker. PHOENIX — Immigration agents arrested the mother and brother of a prominent activist during a raid at her home here late Thursday, unleashing a vigorous response on social media and focusing new attention on one of the most controversial aspects of the Obama administration’s policies on deportation. JUNEAU, Alaska — A federal judge in Alaska has thrown out a plan designating more than 187,000 square miles as habitat for threatened polar bears. U.S. District Judge Ralph Beistline, in a written order dated Thursday, said the designation was too extensive and presented ‘‘a disconnect between the twin goals of protecting a cherished resource and allowing for growth and much needed economic development.’’ He sent the matter back to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to correct ‘‘substantive and procedural deficiencies.’’

President Obama may be regretting his newfound commitment to appoint women to the top ranks of his administration. Judging from a photo taken on Thursday at a White House meeting, Cecilia Muñoz, Director of the Domestic Policy Council, is holding the president´s feet to the fire as she leans in and gives the Commander-in-Chief an earful. Ms Muñoz´s aggressive stature was featured in the White House Photo of the Day, a continuation of Mr Obama´s public relations campaign to show that women are well-represented in his inner circle.

In 2009, when a prominent accounting firm released a report describing how Obamacare would drive up the cost of health insurance, supporters of the health-care bill were furious, declaring that only insurance-industry shills would be craven enough to produce such poppycock. After all, President Obama had repeatedly promised that his bill would “bring down premiums by $2,500 for the typical family.” In addition, they argued, Obamacare will spend trillions of dollars on health insurance subsidies, such that the uninsured wouldn’t be exposed to any purported rate hikes.

In 1956, the celebrated novelist John Steinbeck declared journalism to be “the mother of literature and the perpetrator of crap.” To the non-Nobel ear, this might sound like denigration or enmity. But Bill Steigerwald’s idol-slaying travelogue of truth suggests the bon mot may have been more aspirational than previously believed. First, a bit of background. After 30 years toiling in journalism, Steigerwald accepted a buyout package from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in 2009—or, as he puts it, “I dove from the deck of the Daily Titanic and swam off to look for books to write till I die.”

The Energy Department said it would seek to open a full-scale interim storage facility by 2025 and a permanent geologic repository by 2048 under the plan. All of the sites would be chosen with the consent of the host communities. The strategy represents the administration´s response to the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has launched a crackdown on prescription drugs and said patients who genuinely need painkillers might have to ´suffer a little bit´ to get the citywide addiction ´epidemic´ under control. Bloomberg announced the plan, which will sharply restrict some of the most common and most powerful painkillers from emergency rooms in the city´s 11 hospitals, yesterday. But it was immediately met with harsh criticism, with doctors claiming it would penalize the poor. However, the Mayor was not swayed, claiming, on his weekly radio show, that there was ´no evidence´

On last night’s edition of Wheel of Fortune, a contestant excitedly declared that she wanted to solve the “song/artist” puzzle and then proceeded to absolutely botch the title of what was arguably the late Johnny Cash‘s most popular song, 1956´s “I Walk the Line.” “I’ll solve the puzzle,” she said, looking at a board that read: “I _A__ THE _INE BY J_HNNY _ASH” Seems pretty easy, no? Her answer: “I Have The Wine By Johnny Cash.”
