Waving aside any pretense of diversity, invoking seldom heard themes of merit and competence, President Barack Obama is about to appoint to his cabinet three of the most naive older white guys that ever walked up the Capitol steps. For an administration that has made “diversity” a worn shibboleth for almost every other series of appointments, why this sudden departure from generating a photo-op like a Benetton ad of Christmas past? Were there no “wise Latina women,” “academically distinguished African-Americans,” or “experienced white women” available? What is it that makes these three candidates so phenomenal as to

There may have been a more personal factor in Washington, D.C. Attorney General Irv Nathan´s decision to let NBC’s David Gregory off the hook Friday than the “prosecutorial discretion” he claimed he was exercising by declining to prosecute Gregory for alleged possession of a high-capacity gun magazine. Professor William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection uncovered an established relationship between Gregory and Nathan´s families. Gregory’s wife Beth Wilkinson (pictured left), an attorney herself, acted in a play with the Attorney General (pictured right) in 2011.

DALLAS- Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is convinced that a lone gunman wasn´t solely responsible for the assassination of his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, and said his father believed the Warren Commission report was a "shoddy piece of craftsmanship." Kennedy and his sister, Rory, spoke about their family Friday night while being interviewed in front of an audience by Charlie Rose at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas. The event comes as a year of observances begins for the 50th anniversary of the president´s death.

Facebook is targeting abortion ads

Many British women were startled when they woke up on New Year´s Day to find their Facebook profiles had started advertising abortion providers to them. The ad in question, from American Abortion advisory website abortion.com, simply said: "Find An Abortion Provider Near You", as well as a US Freephone number. A click led to a mostly US-focused website, which lists a huge number of abortion providers throughout the US and just one provider in the UK, "Abortion support Network".[Snip]However, many who received the ad started to second-guess their lifestyle choices. What were they doing that made Facebook think they

Biden: ´No Silver Bullet´

This month´s busy work for Vice President Joe Biden is his great gun control task force, assigned him by President Obama. Now that it is close to wrapping up, Bidentold reporters in his gaffetastic way that there is "no silver bullet" to any gun-grabbing solutions. After he met with the National Rifle Association, Biden bellied up to the closest microphone and told his constituents in the press that "We know that there is no silver bullet" to stop gun violence. Biden claimed that his meeting with the NRA was "productive," though he did not elaborate upon what that meant.

It´s Death of Little Nell time again in the field of climate "science." The New York Times--aka Pravda--has announced the closure of its Environment Desk. Rumours that the entire environment team, headed by Andy Revkin, have volunteered to be recycled into compost and spread on the lawn of the new billion dollar home Al Gore bought with the proceeds of his sale of Current TV to Middle Eastern oil interests are as yet unconfirmed. What we do know is that it´s very, very sad and that all over the Arctic baby polar bears are weeping bitter tears of regret.

Bamako, Mali — French airstrikes overnight in Mali drove back Islamist rebels from a key city and destroyed a militant command center, the French defense minister said Saturday, as West African nations authorized the immediate deployment of troops to the country. The al-Qaida-linked militants, who have carved out their own territory in the lawless desert region of northern Mali over the past nine months, recently pressed closer to a major base of the Malian army, dramatically raising the stakes in the battle for the vast West African nation. Al Gore’s strategy for saving the Earth seems to be to raise enough money to be able to buy it. After selling his failing Current TV company to Al Jazeera, Gore is suddenly a super rich man. Forbes analyst Ryan Mac says, “Taking into account taxes to be paid on the deal, possible earlier debt and the fact that Gore´s representatives declined to comment, Forbes conservatively estimates the former vice president´s net worth to be at least $300 million.”[Snip] Why, it’s bankrolled by the medieval kingdom of Qatar--which, in turn, makes its money out of black gold.

Senate Dems want to cede

The constitutional power of the purse is overrated anyway, right? Rather than bother to deal with the opposing party, majority Senate Democrats want President Obama to embrace one of two gimmicky solutions to the upcoming battle over the so-called “debt ceiling” — either the “trillion dollar coin” or the “fourteenther” solution, by which the president unilaterally raises the debt ceiling. Obama has wisely resisted the latter course, and his spokesman seemed none too interested when asked about the former yesterday. In a quest to cede more congressional power to an executive they like, Senate Dems penned a

The 36-year-old Fort Worth attorney says he is close to settling on campaigning for Texas land commissioner next year. He doesn´t expect to make up his mind until he knows what Texas Gov. President Obama will take the oath of office later this month “on a stack of Bibles,” the Washington Post tells us. He will place his left hand on Bibles owned by Abraham Lincoln and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Well, that’s a relief. Interestingly, not included in the stack is the Koran, about which Mr. Obama spoke so glowingly in Egypt four years ago. (No Bibles openly displayed there.) Now, swearing on a stack of Bibles ordinarily conveys seriousness of purpose and deeper commitment to carry through on the words you have just uttered.

For a lot of teachers who had Jacob Lew as a student in his youth, Thursday was a moment for pride, as he was nominated by President Barack Obama to be secretary of the Treasury. There may have also been at least one saying, "I bet he wishes he had worked harder in my class." That would be whoever taught — or, rather, failed to teach — Lew how to write presentably in cursive. Many of us fall short of the penmanship standards that once prevailed in American elementary schools, but it doesn´t really matter that our signatures are unreadable.

Coral Gables, Fla.- Marco Rubio—41-year-old son of working-class Cuban exiles—has lived the upwardly mobile immigrant experience. In his fast rise, the Florida Republican has also experienced the politics of immigration. That story isn´t so inspirational. During his successful Senate campaign two years ago, an attack leaflet picturing "the Real Rubio" alongside an image of Che Guevara was sent to GOP voters. The mailer noted that Mr. Rubio championed laws in the state legislature to give children of illegal immigrants in-state tuition and health benefits. After going to Washington, he was then criticized for not doing enough on immigration reform.

One of Big Green´s biggest outfits, the Nature Conservancy (2011 revenue $997 million; assets $6 billion), is once again under fire. This time it´s the 16,500-acre Roberts Ranch in Larimer County, Colo., owned by a 92-year-old woman. TNC allegedly influenced her to donate the land and cattle operation to the county, where it would be run as open space at taxpayer expense -- or, if the county declines the donation,

Some of the good signs: Moreover, much of the news on the legal fight for religious freedom in recent months has been good. With a few notable exceptions, court after court has issued preliminary injunctionsin favor of charities and businesses fighting the infamous “HHS mandate” that would force institutions to pay for abortion-inducing services against the strong, clear dictates of their faith…. A few other statistics also are encouraging:

Well, Vice-President Joe Biden, Eric Holder, and their fellow task force members who met this past week in the great gun debate want 80 million law abiding gunowners to pay for the acts of homicidal nutcases from John Hinckley to Adam Lanza. Biden brazenly announced an impending "by any means necessary" strategy from his boss if gun grabbers don´t get what they want.
