INDIANAPOLIS — An American convicted of fighting alongside the Taliban must be allowed to pray daily in a group with other Muslim inmates at his high-security prison in Indiana, a federal judge ruled Friday. Barring John Walker Lindh and his fellow Muslims from engaging in daily group ritual prayer violates a 1993 law that bans the government from curtailing religious speech without showing a compelling interest, U.S. District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson ruled. The judge blocked the prison from enforcing its ban on daily group prayer, but she noted that her ruling does not prohibit the prison

An earlier post today indicated shock at how rather…cheap the Obama Oval Office appeared in a recent photo. From the colors to the wall art to the what may very well be the worst drapes of any current national leader in the entire world. (They really are that bad) So let’s take a quick compare contrast of today’s Barack Obama Oval Office and compare it to some past presidents. Here is the photo of today’s Oval Office that caused many to remark at how badly the decorating was. Note the odd linoleum-looking table

President Obama announced today that he has agreed that Afghan President Hamid Karzai should proceed with peace negotiations between the Taliban and the new government that has replaced them. “Any peace process, any reconciliation — it is not for the United States to determine what the terms of this peace will be,” Obama said during a joint press briefing with Karzai today. “It is not possible to reconcile without renouncing terrorism, without them recognizing the Afghan Constitution, and recognizing that if there are changes that they want to make to how the afghan process operates then

A 14-year battle over the fate of a modern structure at the heart of Gettysburg National Military Park is over. The National Park Service said Thursday that it would begin demolishing the Cyclorama building as soon as February, clearing the site ahead of the 150th anniversary commemoration of the battle. The site will be restored to its 1863 appearance, complete with a period apple orchard and replicas of the wood fences that once crisscrossed the fields, park spokeswoman Katie Lawhon said. The massive painting that the building once housed has been separately preserved.

A judge on Friday rejected claims by the Mennonite owners of a Lancaster County furniture maker that new federal health-care mandates violate their free-speech and religion rights by making them pay for employees´ contraceptive services. In a 34-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg said the owners of Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. did not prove that complying with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act amounted to a "substantial burden" on their religious rights or that they qualified as a "religious employer" for an exemption. The decision was the latest in a string of conflicting rulings across the country,

The NBC Sports Network, a subsidiary of the communications giant Comcast, is helping to sponsor the largest gun trade show in the country despite anti-gun rhetoric on the NBC family of television networks, including a controversial monologue by one of its sports announcers. NBC Sports is listed as one of the primary sponsors of the 2013 SHOT Show, which takes place Jan. 15 to18 in Las Vegas and bills itself “the world’s premier exposition of combined firearms.” NBC commentator Bob Costas made national headlines

The national battle over voter ID laws that roiled the presidential campaign for a time then fizzled before Election Day is set to rage again in 2013. This year promises a flurry of new voter ID legislation across the country as well as reignited court battles in states where the laws were blocked last year and a Supreme Court ruling on part of the Voting Rights Act.All of the activity will bring the debate — which pits conservatives targeting potential election fraud against voting-rights groups convinced the laws are really about disenfranchising low-propensity liberal voters — to the forefront again.

War On Terror: Before we confirm the president´s national security team, let´s get some answers to why no terrorists have been captured or killed after the consulate attack and why the administration doesn´t seem to care. Last Tuesday, the Tunisian government released Ali Ani al-Harzi, a leading suspect in the attack who was taken into custody after fleeing Libya for Turkey and then sent to Tunisia. A Tunisian court said he was released for lack of evidence, but more likely he was released for no lack of pressure from Islamist groups in and outside Tunisia. Author corrected by Staff.

´We must act now" has become the cry — sometimes the scream — heard from politicians on the left a few weeks after the Newtown massacre of 20 schoolchildren and six of their educators. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, in an interview last week, very tellingly said regarding new gun-control laws, "the safety of our country cannot go as slow as the slowest ship in the House of Representatives or even the United States Senate." Translation: Democrats are determined to bypass the normal, orderly process of congressional hearings and votes by the elected representatives of the American people.

In what seems like a surprise move, the White House working group on gun control is considering expanding federal funding for cops in schools. It was the NRA´s Wayne LaPierre who, a week after the shooting in Newtown, recommended placing armed police officers in every school in America. The idea was ridiculed by the left but has been embraced by the school superintendent in Newtown at the behest of many parents. There are currently two officers present at each of the six schools in the Newtown district. The White House has found that even many Democrats

Piers Morgan dismissed gun-rights advocate John Lott by scoffing at him. Piers Morgan dismissed gun-rights advocate Larry Pratt by insulting him. Piers Morgan dismissed gun-rights advocate Alex Jones by saying nothing. And Piers Morgan struggled to find the appropriate strategy for dismissing Ben Shapiro, editor-at-large of Breitbart.com and a foe of extraordinary polemical agility. He started in on Morgan by contending that the CNN star had exploited the dead children of Newtown: What you tend to do is you tend to demonize people who differ from you politically by standing on the graves of the children

Pedometers track your physical activity, by measuring the steps you take each day. Now, they´re being used in several local schools to track the physical activity of students. Should schools require students to wear them? Several parents tell 2 On Your Side that they´re refusing to have their kids wear them and a prominent local attorney says they´re onto something. In one of the biggest joint letters of its type ever written, they raise fears that their freedom to practise and speak about their faith will be “severely” limited and dismiss Government reassurances as "meaningless". They even liken David Cameron’s moves to redefine marriage to those of Henry VIII, whose efforts to secure a divorce from Katherine of Aragon triggered centuries of bloody upheaval between church and state. They claim that, taken in combination with equalities laws and other legal restraints, the Coalition´s plans will prevent Catholics and other Christians who work in schools,

An update on the Feminist & The Cowboy story, one that deserves its own separate post. This is from author Alisa Valdes’s blog. A week after her book was published, here she is saying that the Cowboy is a roaring turdbucket who dumped her, and the book is a disaster that it will lead women astray. Excerpts: I believe very firmly that the truth is the only currency a writer has, and that if there is any hope of redeeming this book and making it meaningful it lies in the full story of my relationship

On Wednesday we refuted Nancy Pelosi´s "14th Amendment solution" to the crisis that would result if Congress fails to raise the statutory limit on public debt. In brief, Pelosi´s argument is that the 14th Amendment´s clause providing that "the validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, . . . shall not be questioned," implies that the president has the authority, even without congressional approval, to borrow money if necessary to pay off public obligations. The trouble with this argument is that it ignores the distinction between public debt and spending that Congress has mandated.

At ground level there is nothing out of the ordinary about the former Atlas E missile base in Dover, Kansas. But delve below the surface and beyond the military detritus and you will soon discover a subterranean wonderland. Ambitious Edward Peden spent 12 years converting the bunker into the place he now calls home. Where once there was a cutting-edge missile ready to be deployed at the height of the Cold War, there are now homely rugs, sofas and even a few bongos. The former schoolteacher purchased the 37 acre site in 1983 for $48,000,

In remarks with Afghan president Hamid Karzai at the White House this afternoon, President Barack Obama said the U.S. has fallen "short of the ideal" in Afghanistan: "So, you know, I think that, have we achieved everything that some might have imagined us achieving in the best of scenarios? Probably not. You know, there´s a human enterprise, and you know, you fall short of the ideal," said Obama. The president went on to say that America has achieved some measure of success in Afghanistan, however. "Did we achieve our central goal? And have we been able, I think,

British police have finally issued their first major report on the criminal sex scandal that has rocked Britain´s TV and entertainment industry, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), for well over a year and the details are shocking. Late BBC TV and radio star Jimmy Savile is accused of physically abusing hundreds of children--the youngest of whom was just 8--as well as many young adults whom he met through his high profile charity work at various children´s hospitals throughout England. Savile's crimes began in Manchester in 1955, peaked in the late 70's and early 80's,

San Diego - In much of the civilian world, today is Casual Friday, in which at-work dress codes, if there are any, are relaxed so employees can feel more comfortable and collegial. Not so for Marines at Camp Pendleton and elsewhere. Starting this month, all Marines except those who are deployed are ordered to wear service uniforms on Friday. They can no longer show up in utility uniforms, often referred to as camouflage. Depending on the season, there are two sets of acceptable service uniforms. The "bravos" consist of a long-sleeve khaki shirt with tie and trousers.

The host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” David Gregory, will not be arrested or charged with a crime for waiving what he claimed was a high-capacity ammunition gun clip on national television last month. D.C. attorney general Irvin B. Nathan announced his decision Friday afternoon by releasing a letter to an attorney for NBC. Nathan wrote that though the device Gregory held up “meets the definition” of the criminal statute, he wrote that prosecution “would not promote public safety in the District of Columbia nor serve the best interests of the people of the District to whom this office owes...

On Friday´s CBS This Morning, Bill Plante refreshingly spotlighted how firearms are used to protect the lives of ordinary Americans. Plante noted how the National Rifle Association "Tweeted a story...about Melinda Herman, a Georgia woman who shot an intruder in self-defense as she waited with her two children in a closet....She fired at the man multiple times with a .38 caliber handgun." The two other Big Three morning shows failed to mention this story during their coverage of the current gun control debate. ABC´s GMA actually minimized the air time

Worried friends and relatives of Nordstrom Rack hostages gathered at the Los Angeles Police Department´s Pacific station on Friday, waiting for detectives to release their loved ones. The mother and brother of a 19-year-old female hostage – both of whom are also employees at the Westchester store -- tried to reach the woman about 11 p.m. at the end of her shift Thursday night, but got no answer and assumed she was working late. "My sister finally called at 3 and asked if we could go get her at the mall,"
