Barack Obama may intervene directly on climate change by hosting a summit at the White House early in his second term, environmental groups say. They say the White House has given encouraging signals to a proposal for Obama to use the broad-based and bipartisan summit to launch a national climate action strategy. "What we talked about with the White House is using it as catalyst not just for the development of a national strategy but for mobilising people all over the country at every level," said Bob Doppelt, executive director of the Resource Innovation Group,

There’s a lot to be admired about the new House History website. If you’re into this sort of thing, the site has biographies of every member in the chamber´s history, online exhibits, documentaries, and an index of Capitol art. The page serves as an online museum, without lines or screaming kids. But like a great many museums, a search through its collection reveals a mystery. For the sake of amusement, let´s call it "The Case of the Missing Pelosi." For every speaker of the House, there is a corresponding oil painting. Henry Clay, Newt Gingrich, Dennis Hastert, and John Boehner

These days, there are few things to admire about the socialist, bankrupt and culturally degenerating USA, but at least so far, one thing remains: the right to bear arms and use deadly force to defend one's self and possessions. This will probably come as a total shock to most of my Western readers, but at one point, Russia was one of the most heavily armed societies on earth. This was, of course, when we were free under the Tsar. Weapons, from swords and spears to pistols, rifles and shotguns were everywhere, common items.

Forgotten or semi-forgotten in the hullabaloo over Al Gore netting a cool hundred million from the sale of Current TV to Al Jazeera is that back in 2009 the ex-veep was on his way to being the first carbon billionaire off global warming. It’s unclear how close he came to accomplishing that goal, but it’s a safe bet he didn’t do badly, considering his lifestyle. (Well, this house apparently went to Tipper in the breakup.) Whatever else he is, Gore is arguably a business genius when it comes to generating massive amounts of income from dubious enterprises and,

From the leader of the unfailing public servants who brought you 350,000 Chicago students abandoned for two weeks, comes this gem. Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union: In the clip, recorded Dec. 2 during her keynote address of the Illinois Labor History Society’s Union Hall of Honor dinner and posted on YouTube Monday, Lewis noted that an earlier generation of labor leaders resolved their differences with the rich with a very straightforward mantra: “Off with their heads.” “Do not think for a minute that the wealthy are ever going to allow you

The job market continued to improve last year, but the pace of improvement was agonizingly slow. The unemployment rate edged down to 7.8%, a drop of 0.7% compared with the end of the previous year. Payroll employment grew 153,000 a month. Payroll gains in 2010, 2011, and 2012 have now offset a little more than half the loss in payroll jobs we suffered in 2008 and 2009. The net improvement is less than these numbers suggest, because we need employment to increase about 90,000 every month in order to accommodate the growth of the working-age population. Two features of the recovery

The new chairman of the Anne Arundel County House delegation said today he will attend a conservative political conference Saturday in Annapolis despite calls from a Muslim advocacy group that described a keynote speaker as a notorious "Islamaphobe." Del. Nic Kipke, who was elected chairman on Tuesday, called blogger and author Pamela Geller an outspoken critic of the treatment of women in some Islamic countries. "I don´t know Ms. Geller personally," the Pasadena Republican said. "What I do know about her is that she has pointed out gross atrocities that occur in some Muslim countries against women."

Barack Obama is relying on contractors and businesses to pay as much as $1 million (£624,000) for his inauguration party later this month. The fund-raising strategy marks a shift from Mr Obama´s 2009 inauguration, when he banned corporate money and limited individual contributions to showcase his commitment to transparency and clean government. This time around, organisers are soliciting bigger donations to pay for a party that will lack the historic aura of 2009, when Mr Obama became the nation´s first black president. Donors include prominent government contractors such as AT&T and Microsoft and a business that sells inauguration merchandise.

During the "fiscal cliff" debate, the White House justified raising taxes on the rich to ensure people "pay their fair share." But the beneficiaries were hardly the poor and dispossessed. Instead, President Obama raised taxes on the rich to fund corporate welfare, with General Electric likely the biggest winner. Obama´s income tax hikes will raise $22.5 billion this year (compared with extending all the Bush tax cuts), while the special-interest business and energy tax credits he demanded will reduce revenue by $65.3 billion, according to data from the Joint Committee on Taxation.

Eric Holder may be the least popular member of the Obama cabinet. He is at the center of many of the Administration´s ugliest fights with left and right, over everything from drones to race. (Snip) First, he has, without major exceptions, backed the president´s views on executive power. Second, he has owned and absorbed the flack for many of the Administration´s most politically challenging battles, from racially-charged fights over voting rights to the battle over so called "gunwalking" on the Mexican border. The third reason is simple: He has not led any politically damaging investigations into the Obama Administration.

Everything from arming teachers and principals, to putting more resource officers on campus, has been suggested to make schools safer. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is launching his own idea this week: utilizing his armed posse members near schools. The sheriff came up with the controversial plan right after the horrific school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Litchfield Park is just one of the schools where a posse member would be close by. The sheriff stresses the armed posse member will not be in the school, or on the campus. Instead, the posse member would be patrolling the perimeter in marked cars.

Barack Obama, we have been told by his admirers on the left and right, is an instinctive centrist, a moderate always ready to negotiate compromises, a politician deeply interested in the nuances of public policy. (Snip) On foreign policy and defense issues, Hagel stands not somewhere between the two parties but conspicuously to the left not only of Republicans but of most Democrats — and to the left of many of the president´s own policies.

LOS ANGELES — “Gangster Squad” director Ruben Fleischer was stepping out of the shower on the night of July 20 last year when he received a chilling phone call from a studio executive at Warner Bros. There had been a deadly shooting at a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colo. The studio was pulling the trailer for its “Gangster Squad” movie. The problem was that the preview, which had been scheduled to debut before some showings of the latest Batman film that weekend, featured a peek at a pivotal moment in the 1940s true-crime romp when

Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis announced Wednesday that she will leave the administration — a surprise resignation that adds to what is turning into a major shake-up among President Obama’s team. The White House was already poised to announce that Mr. Obama will promote White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew to the Treasury secretary post, setting up another contentious confirmation battle on Capitol Hill, where the president’s selection this week of former Sen. Chuck Hagel to head the Pentagon is already running into opposition.

The White House is working with its allies on a well-financed campaign in Washington and around the country to shift public opinion toward stricter gun laws and provide political cover to lawmakers who end up voting for an assault-weapons ban or other firearm restrictions. With President Obama preparing to push a legislative agenda aimed at curbing the nation’s gun violence, pillars of his political network, along with independent groups, are raising millions of dollars and mapping out strategies in an attempt to shepherd new regulations through Congress.

“Even victors are by victories undone.” — John Dryden Democrats not allergic to arithmetic must know the cost of their “fiscal cliff” victory. When they flinched from allowing all of George W. Bush’s tax rates, especially those on middle-class incomes, to expire, liberalism lost its nerve and began what will be a long slide into ludicrousness. Those temporary rates were enacted in 2001, when only 28 House Democrats supported them, and in 2003, when only seven did. But with the “American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012” — did liberals think about that title?

One of the striking features of the current debate over gun control is how tired the liberals’ ideas are. Chief among their proposals is re-instituting the ban on “assault weapons.” But we’ve already tried that: a ban on “assault weapons”–a meaningless term that finds significance only in the arbitrary definitions of the defunct federal statute–was in effect for ten years, from 1994 to 2004, and no one claims that it did any good. Connecticut, like a number of other states, already bans “assault weapons,” but that availed the kids at Sandy Hook nothing.

Supreme Court President Luisa Estella Morales made the statement amid a heated debate between the government and opposition over whether the constitution requires the cancer-stricken leader to be sworn in for a new term on Thursday. Governor Andrew Cuomo was merely appealing to his blue state liberal base when he said recently that “confiscation could be an option” when considering possible changes in New York’s gun laws. Since then, Cuomo has acknowledged that forcing citizens to give up their legally owned firearms is not the most practical idea to emanate from Albany. New York already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, including an assault weapons ban. But Cuomo, like President Obama, is looking to capitalize on the public outrage about the Newtown massacre to build up support for even more restrictions

The New York Times´s Manny Fernandez greeted the opening of the biannual Texas legislative session in Austin in Wednesday´s paper: "Texas Budget Surplus Proves as Contentious As a Previous Shortfall." After explaining how Texas has become flush with cash over the last two years, going from a budget deficit to surplus, Fernandez couldn´t help working in a cut against the "far-right" Tea Party. Shortly after noon inside the Capitol’s Senate chamber, Gov. In a gun-grabbing scheme as desperate as it is wrong, President Obama is threatening to bypass Congress and go it alone via Executive Orders if legislators don´t move fast. The sudden rush to Executive Orders comes as Obama sees the writing on the wall: the American people do not want more gun control, and the Republican Congress is listening to the people. Thus, Obama´s roots are showing -- his Chicago thuggery is coming out. And through the threat of Executive Orders, he´s basically telling citizens that he will get what he wants... and they will like it.

A photo of President Barack Obama meeting with his nearly all-male staff – a barely visible Valerie Jarrett being the exception -- to discuss fiscal cliff negotiations prompted questions at Wednesday´s White House briefing about the number of high-level women in his administration. The issue has gained relevance recently as news unfolded that the president would appoint men to all of the highest-profile cabinet positions (State, Defense and Treasury), even as some women were in the running. The number of women senior staff shrank even further Wednesday with Labor Secretary Hilda Solis
