A son of the late Robert F. Kennedy, who was acquitted of criminal charges in a maternity ward scuffle, is suing two nurses who publicly said that he kicked them in the crotch during the assault. Douglas Kennedy is alleging defamation and malicious prosecution by nurses Cari Luciano and Anna Lane. He said their statements to police and on NBC´s Today show held him up to ´ridicule and scorn´ and led to his prosecution. The lawsuit, filed on Friday in White Plains, New York stems from Kennedy´s attempt a year ago to take his newborn son from Northern Westchester Hospital

The long feared nightmare of U.S. public health officials has come to pass with the news anti-biotic resistant Gonorrhea has been detected in North American patients. A study released today by the Journal of the American Medical Association announced it had found nine patients with a strain of the sexually transmitted disease immune to the last remaining effective oral antibiotic. This confirms the fears of both the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation who warned last year that untreatable gonorrhea, the world´s second most common STD would soon become a reality. Researchers observed that 6.7 percent

The great global warming debate was blown wide open again yesterday when the Met Office predicted cooler than expected temperatures for the next five years. The Met Office, one of the top cheerleaders for the man-made climate change camp, said global temperatures are likely to be lower than it forecast in December 2011. It blamed this on the “natural variability of the climate system”, notably changes in ocean surface temperatures. But the admission was branded as embarrassing as the notorious Barbecue Summer forecast in 2009 which led to a washout where the smell of charcoal grills was largely absent

EU bureaucrats have sparked fury by demanding that Britain hands over the personal details of every motorist in the UK or face a £7.5million fine, it emerged last night. They also want the details of those on the national DNA database and fingerprint records so foreign police can check them against crime scenes. If the Government fails to provide access to the information it could be fined at least £7.5million by the European Court of Justice. Labour signed Britain up to the diktat known as the Prum Treaty in 2008, but Home Secretary Theresa May is yet to implement it.

You’ve certainly seen the news stories trumpeting data from the National Climatic Data Center purporting to show that 2012 was the warmest year on record in the continental United States. (Snip) But was 2012 really the warmest year on record in the U.S.? It may have been, but the truth is that we don’t know. There are two reasons for this. First, the historical data sets published by NCDC and NOAA lack integrity. Those organizations, which receive many millions of government dollars to promote global warming theory, do not publish raw data.

One reason for optimism in the New Year is the housing market, which continues to heal despite the weak economic recovery. Case-Shiller, Lender Processing Services and other data trackers are reporting recoveries in many regions. Even more noteworthy is that the rebound is strongest in states that let lenders enforce contracts. We´re referring to the difference between "nonjudicial" states that have streamlined foreclosure procedures and the 23 "judicial" states that force lenders to go to court to enforce mortgage contracts. Prices are stabilizing in the former but still faltering in much of the latter, which isn´t surprising, except to politicians.

MP´s last night voted to curb annual rises in state handouts for millions of benefit claimants. The landmark decision will be seen as a massive victory for strivers over shirkers. [Snip] It means a string of benefits--including jobseeker’s allowance, income support and housing benefit--will increase at a rate below the expected level of inflation for the next three years. The verdict, which will save taxpayers more than £4billion over those three years, followed growing public frustration at the army of workshy scroungers ripping off the welfare system. Ministers insisted the measure will stop the “unfairness” of benefits rising faster than

This weekend, the New York Times reported on a development that’s completely unsurprising to critics of President Obama’s national health care law: “Health insurance companies across the country are seeking and winning double-digit increases in premiums for some customers, even though one of the biggest objectives of the Obama administration’s health care law was to stem the rapid rise in insurance costs for consumers.” The Times story heavily suggests that the problem is that Obamacare didn’t give federal regulators enough power to outright reject rate increases deemed too high.

In the wake of the murder of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya on 9/11/12, the administration made up for its deceptive accounts of the incident with bloodthirsty avowals that the persons responsible would be hunted to the ends of the earth. Nearly four months later, those promises remain unfulfilled. That stark reality was brought home today by the news that the only known suspect who had been arrested in connection with the terror attack that took the life of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans is no longer in custody.

A recent lawsuit filed in a federal court in California alleges that National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) member Richard Griffin was complicit in a scheme to cover up embezzlement at a major labor union by terminating employees who attempted to expose the effort. The allegations appear in a lengthy complaint filed against the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE). (Snip) President Barack Obama controversially appointed Griffin to the NLRB in January 2012 in a move some observers described as illegal. He never faced confirmation hearings or standard background checks.

Adding to her peerless collection of celebrities confidentials Oprah announced that she´d scored an exclusive interview with Lance Armstrong "in his first no-holds-barred interview." More specifically, Oprah´s press release said that "Armstrong will address the alleged doping scandal, years of accusations of cheating, and charges of lying about the use of performance-enhancing drugs throughout his storied cycling career." No-holds-barred? Alleged doping scandal? Few political developments in 2012 offered the intrigue of the high-profile split between FreedomWorks and its chairman, former congressman Dick Armey. Armey, 72, had been with the organization since 2004 and had become in many ways the face of the group. The closing weeks of 2012 offered glimpses of bizarre details: Armey’s departure was sweetened by a payout of $8 million in consulting fees paid in annual $400,000 installments from a FreedomWorks board member; Armey initially communicated his side of the story through an interview with the progressive magazine Mother Jones.

The Senate must subject former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s choice to be secretary of defense, to a rigorous vetting. Hagel has earned the scrutiny by repeatedly expressing skepticism toward one of the administration’s central foreign policy goals: using economic sanctions and, as a last resort, a credible threat of force to get Iran to abandon its illicit nuclear weapons program. (Snip)Yet Hagel was one of only two senators to oppose sanctions against Iran in 2001.

Celebrities and big Western companies are flocking to join Sina Weibo, the Chinese ´Twitter´. What do you get for the pampered western celebrity who thinks they have everything? A weibo, of course. A what? A weibo, stupid! Pronounced way-bore, weibo is Chinese for “microblog”, and is often referred to as the Twitter of the East. In China, the most popular of the many weibos available to the country’s 500 million internet users is Sina Weibo, a social networking phenomenon that had 368 million registered users at the last count, between them posting an impressive 100 million messages a day.

No one forced me, but I finally decided it was time to discover what all the business was about Honey Boo Boo. Even though I’ve made reference to the show featuring a former beauty tot, now 7, and her family, I’d never actually watched a full episode. I still haven’t, but I watched enough to need a jaw adjustment. Alas, a few minutes with “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” confirms that even mindlessness has its limits. It gives me no pleasure to add to the ridicule of Honey, whose real name is Alana, or her family.

Washington - In the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting, one of the state´s senators announced Tuesday he will introduce legislation requiring background checks to buy ammunition. "Ammunition is now the black hole in gun violence prevention," Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal said. Blumenthal said it is illegal to sell either guns or ammunition to certain groups of people including felons, the mentally ill and those who commit domestic violence. But under current law someone can buy bullets from a gun store without any review of the person´s background.

Who hasn’t seen the television commercials for animal groups? With heart-touching music playing behind a montage of sad-looking dogs and cats, an announcer pleads for contributions to “save” the animals. No organization runs more of these highly effective ads than the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Many contributors agree to donate $18 a month, helping the ASPCA to bring in $111.3 million for the year ending June 2010. As 2012 came to an end, however, what the ASPCA did not advertise was the fact that, on December 26, $9.3 million in contributions

Since Rahm Emanuel won a landslide victory to become mayor of Chicago in 2011, he has touted the city as “world class.” Chicago is America’s third-largest city, and is one of its three largest convention cities. It has the nation’s second busiest airport. It has highly rated cultural offerings: the Chicago Symphony, a vibrant local theater industry, great museums. But in one area Chicago has clearly staked its claim to number one. In 2012, Chicago recorded 505 murders. That may not sound all that bad, since in some years in the past two decades

The only way to finance a big European-style state is to have it paid for by massive taxation of everyone, mostly the middle class. Right now, we are avoiding honest debate on this fact. The central issue of our time is the debate over the size and scope of government. Two unpleasant but undeniable mathematical truths limit the feasible policy choices. The recent sound and fury of the fiscal cliff follies in the end signified nothing because the resolution was in fact just a denial of both truths. The first truth is that the current tax rates

There is a delicious scene in the movie Lincoln in which the first couple discuss an upcoming dinner party at the White House. Mary Todd Lincoln can´t figure out why her husband, a famed loner who openly loathes Washington society, invited rival Democrats and radical Republicans to his home. Suddenly, it dawns on her: the 13th Amendment! Abraham is going to try to wipe slavery from the U.S. Constitution, Mrs. Lincoln concludes with an accusatory glare, and he´s going to start by schmoozing key lawmakers! It´s a lesson Barack Obama could learn from history.

Virginia could become the first state to eliminate its gasoline tax if the state legislature votes to adopt Gov. Bob McDonnell’s alternative plan, which calls for raising the state sales tax and imposing additional vehicle registration fees in order to pay for roads throughout the state. “We simply cannot continue to do what we have always done and expect this problem to go away,” McDonnell told the press. “The gas tax is a stagnant revenue source, and no changes to it will provide a reliable growth mechanism for transportation in the state.”
