Getting reactions to the “fiscal cliff” deal/postponement from Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles – they of the much-cited “Simpson-Bowles Commission” – Meet the Press host David Gregory wistfully speculated on what might have been, had only Republicans agreed a year ago to raise income taxes. He cued up Bowles: “Had Republicans conceded the point on revenue earlier, say, in 2011, could we have had a broader agreement along the lines that you think is necessary?” Gregory’s question came after he explained how “Democrats reject this idea that there is some sort of equivalency

On Friday, my friend and colleague Peter Wehner wrote about the question of how the Republican Party can avoid a repeat of the fiscal cliff debacle in the upcoming months as a new deadline for raising the debt ceiling looms. Throughout the last few weeks, Pete has been spot-on in his analysis of what he rightly called the Republicans’ “losing hand” as President Obama and the Democrats forced them to accept a terrible fiscal cliff deal. Though some think the debt ceiling discussion will be very different from the cliff debate, Pete fears the GOP is headed

In his weekly internet address on Saturday, President Obama continued his bullying rhetoric over Americans debt problem. With the fiscal cliff deal signed into law – the deal raised income taxes dramatically on everyone making above $400,000 per year and payroll taxes on everyone regardless of income – the debate has turned to the debt ceiling. America has reached its statutory limit on borrowing authority again, this time at an unthinkable $16.4 trillion. And Republicans want spending cuts in exchange for granting more borrowing authority.

Making the rounds on the Sunday news programs this morning, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, pressed by NBC’s David Gregory, suggested that, yes, he’s willing to risk a government shutdown in order to hold the line in the upcoming negotiations over the debt ceiling. You may recall that President Obama, for his part, has announced that he will not negotiate over raising the debt ceiling: “While I will negotiate over many things, I will not have another debate with this Congress over whether or not they should pay

A concerted effort to unseat Speaker John A. Boehner was under way the day of his re-election to the position, but participants called it off 30 minutes before the House floor vote, CQ Roll Call has learned. A group of disaffected conservatives had agreed to vote against the Ohio lawmaker if they could get at least 25 members to join the effort. But one member, whose identity could not be verified, rescinded his or her participation the morning of the vote, leaving the group one person short of its self-imposed 25-member threshold.

In the summer of 2008, while the two of them were on a trip to Afghanistan, then-Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., gave a bit of advice to then-presidential candidate Barack Obama. "I told Obama he should pick [Joe] Biden as his running mate," Hagel recalled in a 2010 interview with National Journal. "I said, ´He understands governance better than anyone else. In particular, he understands Congress. He understands how it fits together like no one else you could get. He´s got the political piece. He ´s got the policy piece. There´s nobody in his league.´"

She’s heir to a $1 billion fortune, keeper of the legacy of pop’s biggest star. She grew up with a father who spent money with abandon, popped pills, wasted away into emaciation — all while living in perpetual childhood. So the most surprising thing about Paris Katherine Jackson, age 14, is how normal she is. That’s all thanks, ironically, to her damaged, brilliant father, Michael Jackson.

A new shot has been fired in the battle in Concord over the plastic water bottle ban, with opponents now vowing to repeal the controversial law — considered the first of its kind in the nation — that went into effect Tuesday. “People should have the freedom to buy a legal product in the town they live in,” contends Robin Garrison, who has spearheaded a group called Concord Residents for Consumer Choice that hopes to bring single-serve plastic water bottles under 1 liter back to stores in town. “It should not be outlawed.”

KAILUA, Hawaii- The first family dined out at Buzz´s steakhouse on the last night of their vacation and prepared to bid aloha to Hawaii ahead of a Sunday return to Washington. President Obama and his family dined with unidentified family friends at the local eatery near Kailua Beach Park. Their outing attracted a crowd. The press wasn´t made privy to what the president and his family did the rest of his final day in Hawaii, but a small group of demonstrators showed up in the neighborhood holding up signs. President Barack Obama has returned to Washington after a winter vacation in Hawaii that was interrupted by the ´fiscal cliff´ crisis. Obama arrived at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Sunday morning after an overnight flight as Sasha and Malia return to school tomorrow. The president´s annual end-of-year visit to his native state was disrupted just after Christmas when he was forced to return to the capital to help broker a solution on a plan to avert a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that could have plunged the economy back into recession.

As a recent critic myself of Republican leadership, I would like to congratulate Speaker Boehner, Leader Cantor and the entire Republican leadership in the House and the Senate. They have succeeded in luring the President and his minions into a deal they will come to regret. All the wise guys disagree with me. Of course, the progressive media are crowing about President Obama´s great victory. They are touting his brilliant negotiating skills. They are positively giddy with schadenfreude for conservatives.

With President Obama busy demagoguing, Republicans are moving toward the conclusion – too late, of course – that they should stop relying on the President for negotiations and compromise. With regard to spending cuts and the debt ceiling, Rep. Patrick Tiberi (R-OH), chairman of the Ways and Means subcommittee on taxes, said to The Hill, “Clearly, having presidential leadership on any big issue makes it a heck of a lot easier to get it done.” But, he added, “we don’t have faith in this president to lead on anything.

Rescuers searched by air and sea today off the coast of Venezuela for the plane carrying Italian fashion mogul Vittorio Missoni, the man credited with turning his father’s fashion house into a global empire that includes hotels, housewares and bicycles. The 58-year-old left the remote Los Roques archipelago Friday on a twin-engine plane bound for Caracas, Venezuela. On board were his wife, two friends and two pilots. Thirty minutes after takeoff, the plane vanished into the Caribbean, leaving the tight-knit Missoni clan anxiously waiting for answers.

Don’t you love how the Left and their step-n-fetch media mavens are trying to make law-abiding gun owners the bad guys? You don’t? Yeah, me neither. From Hollywood’s heavily armed guarded elite to the radical, anti-gun commie rag Journal News, peaceful and upright average Joes are being isolated and concentrated on as the bane of America’s existence just because we righteously and lawfully keep and bear arms. Hollywood has even cobbled together a little tsk-tsk black and white video demanding our government do something about gun violence

LONDON — They have barely 3,000 inhabitants and far more sheep than people. They are more than 8,700 miles from London. For much of the year, they are bitterly cold and wind-swept, with only open sea and ice between them and Antarctica. President Ronald Reagan, who tussled with Margaret Thatcher over them as he rarely did on any other issue that engaged the two leaders, described them once as “that little ice-cold bunch of land down there.” But the Falkland Islands, the focus of a short war between Britain and Argentina in 1982

Belfast, Northern Ireland -- Petrol bombs, smoke canisters and hurled bricks have injured dozens of police during weeks of violence in Northern Ireland, officials said Sunday. At least 52 officers have been wounded since pro-British protests erupted in the Northern Ireland city of Belfast last month, police said. Authorities have arrested 70 people in connection with the violence. Tensions have been high since City Council members there voted a month ago to stop flying the Union Jack flag year-round, restricting it instead to certain days. Politicians, clergy and community leaders were meeting Sunday

Washington--President Barack Obama´s public swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 21 is prompting a different kind of oath within the capital´s tourism industry, as the prospect of disappointing attendance threatens to dent spending on all manner of travel goods and services, from luxury hotel suites to servings of the president´s favorite chili. Mr. Obama´s 2009 inauguration drew an estimated 1.8 million people to Washington, more than any other gathering on the National Mall, according to officials at Destination D.C., the city´s main tourism and convention marketer.

Paul J. Carter was 9 when Richard M. Nixon resigned the presidency in 1974, watching the televised speech with his dad, a loyal Republican who had come home from work early for the event. "I … didn´t grasp the magnitude of it," said Carter, now 47 and a lawyer in Long Beach. Nearly four decades later, the boy´s puzzlement over the nation´s 37th president had evolved into a grown-up project, "Native Son Richard Nixon´s Southern California: My Life on a Map!" Made like a guide to Hollywood stars´ homes, the fold-out map is an illustrated romp through the life

The orchestra played and loyal lawmakers erupted in adulatory applause as Hugo Chavez invoked Fidel Castro and Jesus Christ as his revolutionary role models. His right hand raised, the fiery Venezuelan leader echoed the famous call to arms of his Cuban mentor. "Fatherland, socialism or death," he proclaimed, then added with a typical flourish: "I swear by Christ, the greatest socialist in history." That was six years ago as "El Commandante" was sworn in for his third term as president and blew kisses to rose petal-tossing crowds

IT was hard not to feel sorry for John Boehner, wounded, weepy, mercilessly flogged by Chris Christie. The miserable-looking Boehner was even scaring small children. After squeaking out re-election as House speaker when crazed conservatives rebelled on Thursday, Boehner summoned gruff bonhomie as he presided at a ceremonial swearing-in for House members. But some of the kids posing for pictures seemed a little alarmed at Boehner’s awkward pats, brusque small talk and barked orders when someone posed the wrong way.

[Video] Let me be clear, I do not support default on the debt and we should never default on the debt and the only players who are threatening to default are President Obama and Harry Reid. This is an issue, and earlier in the show you played the President threatening default. In any given month tax revenue are 200 billion and interest is 30 or 40 billion. There is it plenty of revenue to service the debt and any responsible President would´ve stood at that podium and said ´whatever happens with the debt ceiling, we will always pay our debt.

As our national debt continues to soar, taxes to rise, and the overall economy to tank, President Obama is talking about...gun control. He is doing this so he can seize on the emotions of those who operate emotionally rather than rationally, thereby diverting their attention from the real crisis our nation faces right now -- which is financial in nature. We are still headed toward the fiscal cliff we narrowly missed days ago: our rendezvous with it was only pushed back a few months. Yet the focus coming out of the White House is on

"Obama Plans Broad Gun Control" screamed the Drudge Report headline. So what actions can a responsible gun owner take to stop this legislative insanity? There are, of course, the accepted channels of communications: email and phone calls to your two Senators and the Representative from your Congressional district. Having once worked as an idealistic political intern in a legislative office, I was flabbergasted at the utter contempt that the staff and "my" legislator held for the ordinary voters of the district. Respect was only paid to the large financial donors and their minions.

Two days ago we posted a discussion around a newly released photo from the White House. The picture was taken in the oval office on Sept 11th 2012: (Snip) The picture was taken at exactly 7:28:16pm DC time. It was dusk outside, and President Obama had just completed a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Why is this important? Because we know the conversation lasted an hour. (Snip) So this phone call between Benjamin Netanyahu and President Obama started three hours after the attack began.
