The Californian picked to lead congressional Democrats´ efforts on gun control says the positions held by some gun rights advocates are unnecessarily divisive, and that government action should go beyond simply outlawing certain weapons. "I think assault weapons are a pox on the home of every gun owner," Rep. Mike Thompson said Saturday on CNN. "I think that´s the thing that´s going to cause the overwhelming majority of people in this country who aren´t gun owners to have negative feelings about those of us who are gun owners." Thompson is a gun owner and hunter himself,

Lance Armstrong lied to me. Twice. I know, I’ve got plenty of company. He lied to other journalists, racing officials, his fans, and anyone else who would listen in denying that he used illegal substances in winning his cycling titles. Now comes an orchestrated leak to the New York Times in which Armstrong seems about to fess up, “according to several people with direct knowledge of the situation.” He has “told associates associates and antidoping officials,” says the paper, “that he is considering publicly admitting that he used banned performance-enhancing drugs and blood transfusions during his cycling career.”

When you have an administration run by pinheads who haven’t spent much time outside government, you get things like Cash for Clunkers. According to E Magazine, the “Clunkers” program, which is officially known as the Car Allowance Rebates System (CARS), produced tons of unnecessary waste while doing little to curb greenhouse gas emissions. The program’s first mistake seems to have been its focus on car shredding, instead of car recycling. With 690,000 vehicles traded in, that’s a pretty big mistake.

In the run-up to his 2009 inauguration, President Obama’s inaugural committee made much ado about the fact that they would not be accepting any donations from lobbyists or corporations, nor individual donations in excess of $50,000 — and there was really no reason that they would have needed them, anyway. The Hopenchangey spirit carried over from 2008 was enough to fund all of the balls, concerts, parties, and other pomp surrounding the inauguration the first time around, but this year, the enthusiasm level is sufficiently tarnished that they decided to reverse course on that much-vaunted corporate ban

Change is not always good. That should be obvious to anyone who has observed Congress for more than a minute, but unfortunately there seems to be a built-in human bias which assumes that we collectively get wiser as time passes. This optimism bubbles up despite mankind being the race which up till now has given us the charming innovations of slavery, car bombs, and, of course, flying passenger airplanes into occupied skyscrapers.[SNIP}Mind you, I’m not against progress — I just don’t see much evidence that mankind should be put in charge of it

The White House is weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation’s gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, according to multiple people involved in the administration’s discussions. A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks

Addressing the American people for the final time as President, Dwight Eisenhower warned that: This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence--economic, political, even spiritual--is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government.[Snip] Sometimes slippery slopes really do exist. Some folk warned that the public health industry--that is, the Government-Health-Security Complex--would never be satisfied with its battles against tobacco and alcohol and that it would, in time, launch fresh offensives against fast food, soft drinks, and all things salty and sweet. New figures have shown that between July and September, almost ten percent of 520 people in the region urgently referred to specialists after being given the dreaded diagnosis were forced to wait longer than the Scottish Government target of 62 days for their treatment to begin. For patients with colorectal cancer and cancer affecting the head and neck, NHS Lothian hit the target in fewer than 80 percent of cases, and in urological cancers, such as bladder

The shooting of five people in Swiss village of Daillon, which left three people dead and two wounded, shocked the public because gun crime is particularly low in Switzerland--despite having the third highest rate of ownership in the world. With only the US and Yemen ranking ahead of Switzerland in ownership rates, Switzerland has become the poster child for staunch gun advocates in the US. Following the mass shooting in Sandy Hook School, Newtown, Connecticut in December, in which 20 children and six adults died, the fevered debate around US gun ownership and control hit boiling point with the example

Historically, the second worst record of job creation. New York Times: For jobs, the past four years have been a wash. The December jobs figures out today indicate that there were 725,000 more jobs in the private sector than at the end of 2008 - and 697,000 fewer government jobs. That works into a private-sector gain of 0.6 percent, and a government sector decline of 3.1 percent. In total, the number of people with jobs is up by 28,000, or 0.02 percent. How does that compare? It is by far the largest four-year decline in government employment

And health officials say the numbers haven´t even peaked yet. When President Obama hugged a tearful New Jersey business owner after Hurricane Sandy ravaged her home and livelihood, it was the image of compassion, promise and hope. But the victim in the photo, Donna Vanzant, has now revealed that the president´s promises to pour aid into the area were empty - and that, after the hug, she merely received a form letter from him. Obama visited the destroyed marina Ms Vanzant owns in Brigantine, New Jersey on October 31 and promised her ´immediate´ aid. Soon after, Ms Vanzant wrote him an email. ´Many days later,

The number of members of Congress who don’t identify with any particular religion is on the rise, according to an analysis by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. In the 96th Congress (1979-80), not a single member of the House or Senate said they didn’t belong to any particular faith, didn’t know or refused to disclose their religion. But in the new 113th Congress, 10 members fall under that category. That’s twice as many as in the 111th Congress (2009-10). Pew notes there’s still a great disparity between the percentage of U.S. adults and the percentage of members

LA JOLLA — There´s a political stink rising in this seaside community, blown ashore from the rocks of La Jolla Cove, where myriad seabirds and marine mammals roost, rest and leave behind what animals leave behind. The offal accumulation is offending noses at trendy restaurants, tourist haunts, and expensive condos perched on some of the most pricey real estate in the country. But finding a solution to the olfactory assault has proved elusive. Environmental regulations have thwarted proposals to cleanse the rocks with a non-toxic, biodegradable solution.

With his left hand on two bibles, McCrory took the oath of office as the state’s 74th governor in a ceremony long on pomp but short in duration.

RALEIGH -- Republican Pat McCrory became North Carolina’s 74th governor Saturday in a brief, simple ceremony that nevertheless marked a major shift in political power in the state. It took only several minutes for McCrory, a 56-year year old former Charlotte mayor and former utility executive, to take the oath of office in the old Senate Chambers in the historic Capitol. The parade, balls, inaugural address and other celebrations surrounding a new governor will occur over the next week.

Of all the many lies put out by the subsidy-troughing scum-suckers of the wind industry and their greenie fellow travellers, the biggest porkie of the lot is this: that wind turbines are eco-friendly. In order to believe this tosh, you´d first have to accept the warped view that being eco-friendly can legitimately entail wiping out millions of bats and birds. It is a measure of just how intellectually and morally corrupt Big Green has grown over the last few decades that many self-professed environmentalists actually cleave to this belief. Why else would they expend so much energy trying to defend--or

President Obama’s financial regulators are reportedly negotiating a secret settlement with 14 banks to end an investigation into predatory loans and foreclosures because federal investigators are having trouble finding the evidence they need for a successful end to the probe. Fourteen banks — such as JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, and Bank of America — would pay $10 billion, under the settlement, that would be used for relief for homeowners and families that have lost their homes. What do the banks get? “The proposed settlement would also halt a separate sweeping review of more than four million loan files
