A Labour politician has called for a ban on sugary cereals and high fat foods aimed at children. Shadow health secretary Andy Burnham said voluntary agreements with the food industry were not working and action must be taken to stop Britain storing up "huge problems" for the future.[Snip] Mr Burnham said: "It is clear that the current voluntary approach is not working. We need to open our minds to new approaches in tackling child obesity. "Labour wants to lead this debate. That is why we are asking the public and experts if new limits for sugar, fats and salts would

The U.S. has been hit with a particularly aggressive early flu season this year with widespread reports of the illness across the country, hospitalizing 2,257 people and leaving 18 children dead before the end of 2012. And health officials say the numbers haven´t even peaked yet. [Snip] ´It’s about five weeks ahead of the average flu season,´ said Lyn Finelli, lead of the surveillance and response team that monitors influenza for the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. ´We haven’t seen such an early season since 2003 to 2004.´

When President Obama hugged a tearful New Jersey business owner after Hurricane Sandy ravaged her home and livelihood, it was the image of compassion, promise and hope. But the victim in the photo, Donna Vanzant, has now revealed that the president´s promises to pour aid into the area were empty - and that, after the hug, she merely received a form letter from him. Obama visited the destroyed marina Ms Vanzant owns in Brigantine, New Jersey on October 31 and promised her ´immediate´ aid. Soon after, Ms Vanzant wrote him an email. ´Many days later,

The number of members of Congress who don’t identify with any particular religion is on the rise, according to an analysis by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. In the 96th Congress (1979-80), not a single member of the House or Senate said they didn’t belong to any particular faith, didn’t know or refused to disclose their religion. But in the new 113th Congress, 10 members fall under that category. That’s twice as many as in the 111th Congress (2009-10). Pew notes there’s still a great disparity between the percentage of U.S. adults and the percentage of members

LA JOLLA — There´s a political stink rising in this seaside community, blown ashore from the rocks of La Jolla Cove, where myriad seabirds and marine mammals roost, rest and leave behind what animals leave behind. The offal accumulation is offending noses at trendy restaurants, tourist haunts, and expensive condos perched on some of the most pricey real estate in the country. But finding a solution to the olfactory assault has proved elusive. Environmental regulations have thwarted proposals to cleanse the rocks with a non-toxic, biodegradable solution.

RALEIGH It took less than 10 minutes Saturday for Republican Pat McCrory to complete a journey he’d started years ago, from Charlotte City Hall to North Carolina’s governor’s mansion. With his left hand on two bibles, McCrory took the oath of office as the state’s 74th governor in a ceremony long on pomp but short in duration.

RALEIGH -- Republican Pat McCrory became North Carolina’s 74th governor Saturday in a brief, simple ceremony that nevertheless marked a major shift in political power in the state. It took only several minutes for McCrory, a 56-year year old former Charlotte mayor and former utility executive, to take the oath of office in the old Senate Chambers in the historic Capitol. The parade, balls, inaugural address and other celebrations surrounding a new governor will occur over the next week.

A Democratic state lawmaker´s recent web post critical of the libertarian-leaning Free State Project has gone virtually viral in the past few days and, as one might expect, has drawn criticism. Reacting to reports that the Free State Project is aggressively trying to bring 20,000 supporters to live in the state over the next two years, Rep. Cynthia Chase, D-Keene, wrote on BlueHampshire.com: “In the opinion of this Democrat, Free Staters are the single biggest threat the state is facing today.”

Of all the many lies put out by the subsidy-troughing scum-suckers of the wind industry and their greenie fellow travellers, the biggest porkie of the lot is this: that wind turbines are eco-friendly. In order to believe this tosh, you´d first have to accept the warped view that being eco-friendly can legitimately entail wiping out millions of bats and birds. It is a measure of just how intellectually and morally corrupt Big Green has grown over the last few decades that many self-professed environmentalists actually cleave to this belief. Why else would they expend so much energy trying to defend--or

President Obama’s financial regulators are reportedly negotiating a secret settlement with 14 banks to end an investigation into predatory loans and foreclosures because federal investigators are having trouble finding the evidence they need for a successful end to the probe. Fourteen banks — such as JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, and Bank of America — would pay $10 billion, under the settlement, that would be used for relief for homeowners and families that have lost their homes. What do the banks get? “The proposed settlement would also halt a separate sweeping review of more than four million loan files

WASHINGTON— Speaking out for the first time since he resigned, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal takes the blame for a Rolling Stone article and the unflattering comments attributed to his staff about the Obama administration that ended his Afghanistan command and army career. "Regardless of how I judged the story for fairness or accuracy, responsibility was mine," McChrystal writes in his new memoir, in a carefully worded denouncement of the story. The Rolling Stone article anonymously quoted McChrystal´s aides as criticizing Obama´s team, including Vice President Joe Biden.

President Obama never disappoints. When the monthly unemployment rate fails to drop, forget it. What’s important is the number of jobs created. But when the rate actually does drop, forget the growth (or lack of it) in jobs. It’s the rate that matters. And don’t blame Obama for the persistence of slow economic growth and high joblessness. That’s the “new normal.” As for the millions of dropouts from the job market, that’s no big deal, hardly worth more than a passing mention.(Snip) No president in my lifetime has been covered so favorably and so gingerly.

A federal court has ruled that South Carolina was the prevailing party in the unnecessary Voter ID litigation, and therefore the Justice Department is liable for paying the state’s costs. South Carolina spent $3,500,000 to obtain federal court approval of the state’s Voter ID law as non-discriminatory under the Voting Rights Act. The lawsuit was made necessary only because of the political and ideological radicalism of Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez and his deputy Matthew Colangelo. It all started, as things tend to these days, on Twitter. Ron Meyer Jr., a 23-year-old conservative activist, started using a catchy hashtag — #FireBoehner — as he railed against Speaker John Boehner. The hashtag quickly became a pet project. All day, Meyer (@RonMeyerJr) would tweet links and snarky comments about the Ohio Republican, whom he calls “a member of the Beltway class.” Meyer, however, has fewer than 2,000 followers, so the hashtag didn’t get much attention until his girlfriend, fellow activist Celia Bigelow (@CeliaBigelow), who has more than 9,000 followers, joined the #FireBoehner cause. Pretty soon, their boss noticed.

On Friday’s broadcast of Fox News Channel’s “Special Report,” Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer argued that Speaker of the House John Boehner avoided a “rape of the Treasury” by postponing the vote on Hurricane Sandy relief legislation. New York Republican Rep. Peter King and New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie joined Democrats in blasting Boehner for the delay, but Krauthammer said some of the criticism is hypocritical. “Sometimes the hypocrisy of the Democrats would leave Diogenes stunned,” Krauthammer said. “The Democrats spent two years savaging President [George W.] Bush over his treatment of Katrina. All of a sudden it’s a paragon of how to deal with disasters.” Text added by Staff. The first sentence of the article must be posted in its entirety.

Vittorio Missoni, 58, an owner of the family-run label famed for its zigzag knitwear, and his wife, Maurizia Castiglioni, were aboard the plane, which was missing after takeoff from the island resort of Los Roques, the company confirmed in a statement on Saturday.
