Obama Promised Not to

In 2008, Barack Obama promised that he would not use signing statements, but last night he released when to accompany his signing of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013. Here´s Obama´s pledge: (video) He said that signing statements are a presidential power grab, and made clear he believed it violated the Constitution. Overnight, however, Obama released this signing statement, in an attempt to try to change the meaning of the defense bill Congress sent to him for his signature:

WASHINGTON — Furious GOP lawmakers unloaded on fellow Republican House Speaker John Boehner yesterday for spiking a bill to provide $60 billion in Hurricane Sandy relief — prompting a stunning about-face that puts the disaster aid back on a fast track. Boehner had told lawmakers late Tuesday night that the bill wouldn’t get a vote before the end of this Congress’ term — without offering a specific reason — triggering outrage within the New York and New Jersey delegations. Lawmakers in both parties immediately concluded that Boehner, who is up for re-election as speaker today,

WASHINGTON — Northeastern Republicans, long outnumbered and overshadowed in their own party nationally, erupted in fury on Wednesday after the Republican-controlled House of Representatives blocked a measure that sought to provide billions of dollars in aid to New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other states pummeled by Hurricane Sandy. The depth of the anger was extraordinary and exceedingly personal, with one Republican after another venting their outrage at one man in particular, Speaker John A. Boehner, Republican of Ohio, who quietly moved to keep the bill from coming to the floor early Wednesday

With all the fuss over political cliff dives and President Obama´s gaffes, this fresh Gallup Poll almost slipped by unnoticed. Faced with the prospect of 1,478 more days of empty Obama promises and speeches, at least half of Americans have now decided that America´s best days are behind us. While whopping majorities expect this year´s economy will remain troubled. That federal deficits will continue. That crime will increase. Taxes too. Along with foreign turmoil. While America´s influence and power decline globally.

As NewsBusters reported Wednesday, Al Jazeera entered into an agreement to buy Al Gore´s failing network Current TV. Hours later, as a result of the purchase, Time Warner Cable dropped the station with a message reading to viewers "This channel is no longer available on Time Warner Cable." According to multiple news sources, Current co-founder Joel Hyatt said in a statement that TWC dropped his TV network because TWC "did not consent to the sale to Al Jazeera." “Current will no longer be carried on TWC,"

At a Brady Center event to “Prevent Gun Violence by Jodie Foster Fans from Accidentally Hitting White House Press Secretaries in the Head” the Brady Center Legal Action Project Director asked retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens whether having a right to a cell phone might be a more universal form of self-defense than gun ownership. “Maybe you have some kind of constitutional right to have a cell phone with a predialed 911 number at your bedside, and that might provide you with a little better protection than a gun, which you’re not used to using,” Justice Stevens mumbled.

Senator Dianne Feinstein´s latest divide-and-conquer attack on the Second Amendment has made even Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) a sucker for the argument that private citizens do not need high-capacity magazines. These include not only 30-round rifle magazines, but 17-round magazines for handguns like the Glock. Why does anybody need a high capacity magazine? If Senator Manchin were to educate himself by, for example, attending Front Sight´s four-day defensive handgun class, he would learn the two primary answers: (1) Failure to stop the aggressor, and (2) Multiple aggressors

CHICAGO — This city’s 471st homicide of 2012 happened in the middle of the day, in the middle of a crowd, on the steps of the church where the victim of homicide 463 was being eulogized. Sherman Miller, who was 21, collapsed amid gunfire not far from the idling hearse that was there to carry away James Holman, 32, shot to death a week earlier. The funeral shooting at St. Columbanus Catholic Church on the South Side left neighbors fretting that no place, not even a church, felt safe any longer. “It’s become the Wild Wild West,”

The U.S. Senate voted 89-8 to approve legislation to avoid the fiscal cliff despite having only 3 minutes to read the 154-page bill and budget score. Multiple Senate sources have confirmed to CNSNews.com that senators received the bill at approximately 1:36 AM on Jan. 1, 2013 – a mere three minutes before they voted to approve it at 1:39 AM. The bill is 154-pages and includes several provisions that are unrelated to the fiscal cliff, including repealing a section of ObamaCare, extending the wind-energy tax credit, and a rum tax subsidy deal for Puerto Rican rum makers.

Iranian officials have instructed residents of Isfahan to leave the city, renewing concerns that a nearby nuclear site could be leaking radioactive material. An edict issued Wednesday by Iranian authorities orders Isfahan’s one-and-a-half million people to leave the city “because pollution has now reached emergency levels,” the BBC reported. However, outside observers suspect that the evacuation order may corroborate previous reports indicating that a uranium enrichment facility near Isfahan had been leaking radioactive material.

Facing a storm of outrage, House Speaker John Boehner did an about face Wednesday and promised to quickly pass $60 billion in Hurricane Sandy aid - a day after abruptly canceling a vote on the package.Officials from New York and surrounding states had spent much of the day blasting Boehner for initially yanking the Sandy aid from consideration. Some of the fiercest criticism came from fellow Republicans. His voice shaking, Rep. Pete King (R-Long Island) took to the House floor Wednesday morning to launch an extraordinary attack on Boehner, his political leader.

In praising Congress´s huge new tax increase, President Obama said Tuesday that "millionaires and billionaires" will finally "pay their fair share." That is, unless you are a Nascar track owner, a wind-energy company or the owners of StarKist Tuna, among many others who managed to get their taxes reduced in Congress´s New Year celebration. There´s plenty to lament about the capital and income tax hikes, but the bill´s seedier underside is the $40 billion or so in tax payoffs to every crony capitalist and special pleader with a lobbyist worth his million-dollar salary.

Conservatives have lost the messaging battle on taxes. The public has bought into the notion that they exclusively care about keeping taxes on the rich low (at the expense of the middle class) and that the growth effects of disguised spending (tax credits) are the same as marginal rate reductions. But stepping back to survey the larger picture, it looks like conservatives have won the war. Beginning with Ronald Reagan’s Economic Recovery Tax Act, conservatives have waged a 30-year war over low tax rates. Consider that in 1979

Al Gore may not have to worry about global warming destroying the earth after all. As it turns out, his massive hypocrisy may destroy the universe before global warming can fully kick in. Gore, an ardent proponent of raising taxes, just sold Current TV, his highly unsuccessful TV network that lost hundreds of millions of dollars, to Al Jazeera – a fitting end for a network that features terrorist-friendly programming. Gore was in a rush to finish the deal, which netted him $100 million as owner of 20 percent of Current TV. Why the rush?

HONOLULU - Passing legislation to avoid the "fiscal cliff" -- and undo income tax increases for most Americans -- was hardly automatic. But signing the bill was. President Obama on Wednesday authorized the use of the "autopen" to enact H.R. 8, the compromise bill approved by lawmakers in the 11th hour after a long stalemate to avert the set of tax increases and budget cuts known as the fiscal cliff. House aides said the American Taxpayer Relief Act was delivered to the White House on Wednesday afternoon, well after the president had left to resume his holiday vacation

Americans take great umbrage whenever they, as a society, are portrayed by the residents of other nations as self-centered, avaricious and overbearing. While an egregious exaggeration in the past, is it an accurate description now? Who are the American people today and what sort of country is the United States in 2013? How does one describe a society wherein a majority of the people, and their elected leaders, have embraced the following mindset? •a) The United States can commit to unlimited government spending as the long-term future of the nation is immaterial and will

WASHINGTON- Housing is rebounding. Families are shrinking debts. Europe has avoided a financial crackup. And the fiscal cliff deal has removed the most urgent threat to the U.S. economy. So why don´t economists foresee stronger growth and hiring in 2013? Part of the answer is what Congress´ agreement did (raise Social Security taxes for most of us). And part is what it didn´t do (prevent the likelihood of more growth-killing political standoffs). By delaying painful decisions on spending cuts, the deal assures more confrontation and uncertainty, especially because Congress must reach agreement later this winter to raise

Under pressure, Speaker John Boehner allegedly lost his temper and screamed at another politician for the second time in just a few days. Boehner snapped at Frank LoBiondo, the Republican representative from New Jersey whose district includes a significant amount of beachfront that was wrecked in the October storm. This comes just days after he told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to ´go f*** himself´ while standing just feet away from the Oval Office. ‘I was chasing the Speaker all over the House floor last night, trying to talk to him and his staff,’ Republican Congressman Peter King said.

Demographics buffs get a special Christmas present every year courtesy of the Census Bureau: its annual estimates of the populations of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. This gives demographers a chance to see where the nation is growing and where it is not, and to get an idea of the destination of immigrants and of the flow of people into one set of states and out of another. Nationally, the Census Bureau estimates that the United States has grown from 308 million people when the Census was conducted in April 2010

WASHINGTON — I wonder, as we begin 2013 and look forward to four more years of this insufferable poseur in the White House, where Sandra Fluke might be. Miss Fluke is the lady who made birth control a matter of national security, in particular her own personal supply of pills and God knows what else. Prior to her appearance on the national scene I always thought it was a male’s responsibility to supply condoms, as the occasion warranted. Yet Miss Fluke enlightened me. Actually she never told us what she used these items for.

Come back, Mr. President. With the fiscal cliff behind him, the president left Washington for the shimmering rainbows and golden beaches of Hawaii as the people left homeless by the Hurricane Sandy-ruined beaches of Rockaway, Midland Beach, Breezy Point, the Jersey Shore sit waiting for a moribund Congress to approve their $60 billion aid package. As the president hopped Air Force One, thousands of people of the storm he promised to help were still trapped on the edge of a fiscal cliff. Not much has apparently changed since four years ago, when I wrote here
