A blind dog can enjoy walkies again--thanks to a guide cat. Eight-year-old Terfel kept bumping into things and spent most of his time stuck in his basket after being diagnosed with cataracts. Then owner Judy Godfrey-Brown let a stray cat into her home--and was amazed by what happened next. The puss, named Pwditat, walked up to Terfel and led him out of his basket and into the garden. She has been helping him find his way around ever since. Retired civil servant Judy, 57, of Holyhead, North Wales, said: “I’ve never seen anything like it--most cats and dogs

Patti Page, the apple-cheeked, honey-voiced alto whose sentimental, soothing, sometimes silly hits like “Tennessee Waltz,” “Old Cape Cod” and “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?” made her one of the most successful pop singers of the 1950s, died on Tuesday in Encinitas, Calif. She was 85. Her death was confirmed by Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, where she lived. Ms. Page had briefly been a singer with Benny Goodman when she emerged at the end of the big band era, just after World War II, into a cultural atmosphere in which pop music was not expected to be

When Paula Papen caught her eight-year-old son playing around on eBay on her iPad, she concocted one way of making sure he took care of grown ups´ toys. With her camera rolling, the mother from Hot Springs, South Dakota convinced her son Kenyon that he had accidentally spent $50,000 on a Ford Mustang that could not be returned. But while she may have wanted to teach him a lesson, she cannot have predicted the youngster´s emotional response. Scroll down for video

New research from the Alaska Climate Research Center shows that since the beginning of the 21st century, temperatures in the snow covered land of Alaska are actually getting colder--bucking the overall global warming trend. In the Last Frontier, where temperatures can get as cold as 50 degrees below zero, local residents have experienced the increasing chill and scientists now confirm that the Northwest state is indeed seeing a temperature drop. A new report from the research center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks reveals that the 49th state of the union has cooled by 2.4 degrees Fahrenheit

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been photographed leaving New York-Presbyterian Hospital with her daughter Chelsea and husband Bill by her side on Wednesday, after spending three days undergoing treatment for a blood clot in her head. Her well-coordinated exit came just hours after her husband emerged from the hospital, flashing a reassuring smile to signal that his wife was on the mend. Secretary Clinton, 65, has been hospitalized since Sunday when her doctors discovered a blood clot in her head, in a vein behind her right ear that helps carry blood away from the brain.

The United States has not gone over the “fiscal cliff”, but it has taken another major step towards EU-style decline.[Snip]Incredibly, for every $1 in spending cuts there are $41 in tax increases. While sold by the Obama administration as a deal to protect the middle class, 77 percent of Americans will now be subject to higher federal taxes, as Tim Stanley notes in his excellent piece, with the expiration of the two percent Social Security payroll tax cut. The fiscal cliff agreement will also significantly hit small businesses and investors, the wealth creators who need to kickstart the US economy

Mrs. Clinton was photographed leaving the hospital shortly after 3:00 p.m., but officials said she was only having tests done at another location. She was back in the hospital about an hour later. Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says Clinton had been "quite active" on the phone Wednesday with State Department aides. She says doctors will continue to monitor her progress. The pundits making a mockery of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton´s head injuries ought to be ashamed of themselves. These commentators contend Clinton is offering excuses to avoid tough questions over the deadly September attack on a U.S. consulate office in Libya. While conservatives fume over the fiscal cliff aversion bill that passed through Congress and now awaits President Barack Obama’s signature, Obama’s team is triumphal about it – and they are ready for a debt ceiling debate featuring more talk about taxing the rich. Despite Obama’s proclamation that the rich are now “paying their fair share,” Obama will undoubtedly call for more tax increases for top earners if Republicans insist on cutting government spending. How do we know? This morning, Obama’s team, led by David Plouffe, sent out an email

New York Republican Rep. Peter King went to war with his Republican colleagues on Wednesday after leaders spiked a Hurricane Sandy relief bill, calling on New Yorkers to stop all donations to GOP House members. “These Republicans have no problem finding New York when they’re out raising millions of dollars,” King said on Fox News. “They’re in New York all the time filling their pockets with money from New Yorkers. I’m saying right now, anyone from New York or New Jersey who contributes one penny to Congressional Republicans is out of their minds. Because what they did last night

They never learn. Well meaning Republicans pressured by media hacks interested only in supporting left-wing policies end up compromising on principles and, instead of getting praise, they get hammered by those same media hacks. The latest example of the damned if you do, damned if you don´t media double standard happened moments ago on MSNBC´s "Morning Joe." Joe Scarborough´s coffee clatch is an arena that constantly criticizes Republicans for being "unreasonable" and beholden to the "radical" tea party wing of their party. For Democrats, there may be few things more entertaining than watching the Republican Party self-destruct and fight with itself these last few weeks. But it may be time to put away the party favors – because a Democratic internal war may be on the way. Just as Republicans were so divided over taxes – from failing to pass their own “Plan B” bill last week, to their leaders splitting votes on last night’s legislative package – Democrats are about to endure an emotional debate about one of their own bedrock principles: the protection of programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) condemned House Republicans Wednesday afternoon for failing to pass a $60 billion package of funding for Hurricane Sandy relief. In the strongest terms, he accused House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) of letting “toxic internal politics” impede necessary storm relief. “There’s only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these victims: the House majority and their speaker,” Christie said. “It was disappointing and disgusting to watch.” Christie told reporters that he has spoken to both Boehner and President Obama today.

Governance in the United States is at a standoff. The crisis over the federal budget has led many people around the world to wonder if Americans haven´t lost their minds. Ultimately, as Winston Churchill infamously observed, they may be counted on to do the right thing after exhausting all other options. But this hardly is sound policy with every new vote in Congress. Maybe the latest crisis is symptomatic of a deeper and even more serious problem. The future of the United States - and the American experiment - seems bleak. The optimism for which Americans are known comes less readily.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday that 1,193 vehicles were torched by French youths overnight in what has become a dubious New Year´s Eve tradition. Hundreds of empty, parked cars go up in flames in France each New Year’s Eve, set afire by young revelers, a much lamented tradition that remained intact this year with 1,193 vehicles burned, Interior Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday. His announcement was the first time in three years that such figures have been released. The conservative government of former President Nicolas Sarkozy had decided to stop publishing them in a bid to reduce the crime

After his vote to increase the deficit in the so-called “fiscal cliff” negotiations, I think so. Definitely so. Think about it. He voted to increase federal income taxes on “rich folks”, giving more revenue to a bloated government without demanding cuts in spending. He voted to increase capital gains taxes without demanding cuts in spending. He voted to increase dividend taxes without demanding cuts in spending. He voted to extend unemployment payments to the tune of $30 billion in more debt without demanding cuts Headline split by staff.

Perched on a narrow crook of land jutting into New York Harbor, the Erie Basin auto pound and evidence warehouse seems a logical place to store hundreds of seized cars, thousands of guns and 9,846 barrels of evidence containing sensitive DNA material. It is easy for the New York Police Department to safeguard the secluded bunker, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, from potential thieves. But not, it turns out, from the surrounding water. As Hurricane Sandy lashed the city, the surge breached the warehouse’s roll-top doors

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings, said: "The British are not coming. ... We don´t need all these guns to kill people." Lewis´ vision, shared by many, represents a gross ignorance of why the framers of the Constitution gave us the Second Amendment. How about a few quotes from the period and you decide whether our Founding Fathers harbored a fear of foreign tyrants. Alexander Hamilton: "The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed," adding later, "If the representatives of the people betray their constituents,

The third wave of ObamaCare taxes began on January 1, the latest blitz before the tsunami of changes from the health overhaul law hit in 2014. These new and higher taxes are being levied to partially pay for ObamaCare’s massive new subsidies for private health insurance and expansion of Medicaid. The most controversial of the latest ObamaCare taxes is the Medical Device Tax that hits entrepreneurial firms making equipment such as heart valves and hip replacement parts. They face a 2.3% profit on gross sales – a tax they must pay even if they have no profit at all.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) and Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) both have well-earned reputations as political brawlers not to be messed with. Many a Democrat has felt the lash of their scorn and the blunt-force trauma inflicted by their sharp political elbows. But now House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is the focus of their opprobrium by putting off a vote on federal aid for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. King declared Boehner’s decision not to take action on the $60 billion Sandy bill for New York and New Jersey “disgraceful.” He said that Congress was “writing off”
