Forty years ago today, in what was arguably the most fateful political move ever made by a British Prime Minister, Edward Heath took us into what was then called the ‘Common Market’. Such a step had scarcely been mentioned at the previous General Election, and the British people had very little idea of what they were letting themselves in for, other than a trading arrangement that might make it easier for us to sell our goods to our Continental neighbours.[Snip]We have seen that supposedly cosy club we joined transformed, step by step, into a vast, bloated bureaucratic empire, imposing its

A lot of people are looking at 2013 and feeling pessimistic. That´s silly, of course. Sure, The Incompetents got reelected. The economy still sucks. It´s likely to get worse because Barack Hussein Obama doesn´t have a clue about capitalism, doesn´t want to and is focused on transforming the America he didn´t grow up in. He´ll be out campaigning and speechifying on something else divisive any day now.

Royal Dutch Shell’s Kulluk drilling rig, re-secured to two vessels with towlines early Monday, grounded around 9 p.m. in rocky water off the southern coast of Kodiak Island during a pounding Gulf of Alaska winter storm, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. A command team that includes Shell briefed reporters on the disaster with the Kulluk late Monday night. It broke loose from a Shell-contracted ship, the Aiviq, around 4:40 p.m. Monday. Then around 8:15 p.m., with the grounding imminent, the second tow boat, a borrowed tug named the Alert, was directed to lose

First things first. At 12:00:00 a.m., we go over the fiscal cliff. And at 12:00:01 a.m., most Americans will be talking about the new year, not the new fiscal regime. That´s entirely appropriate. In theory, midnight will usher in huge policy shifts: The tax code will return to what it was in the Clinton era, while a series of automatic spending cuts will begin to take effect. (snip) It’s as if President George W. Bush finally won—the tax cuts he’d always wanted would be staying on the books indefinitely, "starving the [government] beast" of the resources it needs to survive.

In a piece posted to the Tape Noise Diary blog on Sunday, user JayCruz writes that he had high hopes after scoring a job with the Geek Squad in 2009 after attending technical school. Britain could become a “second-class” EU country under a radical plan being drawn up by top Eurocrats, it emerged yesterday. The move to make the UK an “associate member” of the EU is the brainchild of a group of pro-integration MEPs. Eurosceptics cautiously welcomed the move as evidence Britain could forge a new relationship with Brussels and as a sign that pro-Europe hardliners have finally given up trying to draw us into ever closer integration. But there were fears it could mean the worst of both worlds--with Britain still bound by EU rules but having far less influence. The Daily

The beginning of a new year is often a time to look forward and look back. The way the future looks, I prefer to look back — and depend on my advanced age to spare me from having to deal with too much of the future. If there are any awards to be given to anyone for what they did in 2012, one of those rewards should be for prophecy, if only because prophecies that turn out to be right are so rare. With that in mind, my choice for the prediction of the year award goes to Bret Stephens

We are being played; it´s time we learned the game. Conservatives have their Constitution. Progressives have their Narrative. The current battle for America is between these two concepts, and each side uses different rules to fight it. One set of rules is consistent with an unchanging objective: limited government and individual freedoms. The other side´s rules are as fickle as their goals, which are never fully disclosed beyond the equivocal references to fairness and hyphenated forms of justice.

While senators were aiming for an early morning vote on their in-the-works fiscal deal, calculations from congressional number-crunchers quickly raised questions about how House Republicans would take it. In short, according to rough calculations forwarded by a source close to the talks, the proposal would include $620 billion in new tax hikes and $15 billion in net spending cuts. That kind of lopsided ratio could turn off House conservatives, presuming the bill clears the Senate. One Republican predicted House leaders may only be able to attract 70 Republicans in the chamber.

U.S. President Barack Obama´s step-grandmother, Sarah Onyango Obama, received emergency eye surgery from Israeli doctors in an Israeli-run hospital in Equatorial Guinea last week, the Times of Israel reports. Sarah Onyango Obama is the third wife of Hussein Onyango Obama, President Obama´s grandfather. She is apparently the source for much of what President Obama knows about his family in Kenya, and is one of the most important sources of family lore cited by Obama in his first memoir, Dreams from my Father. Mrs. Obama was transported from her rural village of Nyang’oma Kogelo in western Kenya to the hospital

Just before Christmas, after only being able to watch it in bits and pieces during October and November, I finally had the chance to take in the documentary film Hating Breitbart in one sitting. What prompted me to do so was some unfortunate news, namely a lawsuit filed by the immensely talented Dana Loesch signifying that the late Andrew Breitbart’s nascent publishing empire may be imploding. Washington--With negotiators finally making progress toward averting the fiscal cliff, President Barack Obama on Monday staged a public appearance that for a few anxious moments seemed to derail the talks. The event was part progress report, part pep rally, as the president announced that a deal was "in sight." At the same time, he put Republicans on alert that he wouldn´t let them "shove spending cuts at us" that would hurt middle-class families and said future deficit deals would require more tax increases. He poked fun at lawmakers, saying that "with this Congress," a big deficit reduction

After two weeks of rumors about the health of President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, his Vice-President, Nicolás Maduro, announced on Sunday that the situation was “delicate.” He had flown to Cuba, where Chávez is being treated, to be at his side. This came just a few days after a televised Christmas Eve speech in which Maduro said that Chávez had called him from the CIMEQ—an exclusive hospital in Havana—and was “up and taking exercise.” That announcement had increased the confusion that reigns in Venezuela because of its blatant contradictions with an official report

The Senate approved a scaled-down package early Tuesday morning aimed at halting historic tax hikes for most Americans and postponing across-the-board spending cuts, just hours after Congress missed a midnight deadline for action. The Senate voted 89-8 in favor of the package, which was hastily pulled together after a late-night deal between White House and Senate Republican negotiators. For the near-term, it appears a tax hike will technically go into effect on Jan. 1, as the midnight deadline was missed. In total, $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts are scheduled to hit in the new year

FORT MYERS, Fla.- The history of New Year´s Eve resides in southwest Florida, where descendants of the late, great bandleader Guy Lombardo try to keep his legacy alive with a treasure trove of memories and memorabilia. Two nieces and a nephew of Lombardo proudly display historical items from Lombardo´s heyday in their homes in Fort Myers and Sanibel, but much more languishes in two storage units in south Fort Myers. The relatives have offered the overflow to three colleges, but there have been no takers. They would like to see the memorabilia on loan to a place

Here is a summary of where things stand on the "fiscal cliff," with just minutes to spare before the midnight deadline, after which the Bush tax cuts will expire and massive automatic spending cuts are implemented. The White House--meaning Vice President Joe Biden, since President Barack Obama has been AWOL from negotiations--has reached a deal with Senate Republicans, led by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KS). The rough terms are as follows: an extension of the Bush tax cuts for households earning less than $450,000 per year; an extension of unemployment benefits for the next

America is entering a new economic normal, a reality where almost everything that should be going up is going down, and everything that should be going down is going up. The United States begins 2013 in uncharted economic waters; America has never been here before. Consider, for example, these seven “firsts” for the U.S. economy: 1. All-time record annual average gas price: In 2012, the average cost of a gallon of gas eclipsed the previous record by nine cents, bringing the annual average to $3.60. 2. All-time record food stamp participation: As of last month, for the first time in American

With hours to go before nation heads off the fiscal cliff, Georgetown Law professor Louis Michael Seidman writes that the time has come to scrap the Constitution. In an op-ed published in the New York Times Monday, Seidman, a constitutional law professor, claimed that the nation’s foundational document is the real impediment to progress and solutions to America’s troubles. “As the nation teeters at the edge of fiscal chaos, observers are reaching the conclusion that the American system of government is broken,” Seidman wrote. “But almost no one blames the culprit: our insistence on

The 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, in 2015, is fast approaching, and we should do it justice. Forty years ago today, the United Kingdom joined what was then called the European Economic Community. [Snip] For our part, we were more interested in the economic than the community bit of the EEC. With an economy seemingly in terminal decline and with continental Europe enjoying faster growth and lower inflation, the Common Market seemed like the route to prosperity until the oil price shock of 1974 dished that prospect. So, did we sell our sovereignty for a mess of pottage?
