Brownville, TX - Texas space aficionados hope rockets will someday be launched into orbit from a beachside site near the U.S.-Mexico border, but a tight state budget and a previously frustrated attempt to land such a spaceport could complicate efforts. Backers of a proposal to build a launch site at Boca Chica Beach, about 25 miles east of Brownsville, concede finding more money to lure California-based SpaceX to the state´s southernmost tip will be a challenge. (Snip) Still, some officials think the state´s ability to offer a blank canvas for a dedicated commercial spaceport in the same state

BAGHDAD -Insurgents launched a wave of attacks across Iraq on Monday, primarily targeting Shiite communities and pilgrims and killing at least 23 people, officials said. The attacks appeared aimed at undermining security and confidence in the government by fomenting sectarian conflict. Overall violence has dropped since the nation neared a civil war several years ago, but attacks of a sectarian nature come almost daily, and government forces seem powerless to prevent them. The deadliest blasts on Monday were in the town of Musayyib, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) south of the capital,

But Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro is struggling to replicate the extraordinary charisma of his boss, who is battling to recover from cancer surgery in Cuba. Named as heir apparent by Chavez just before the president returned to Havana for his fourth surgery in December, the 50-year-old former bus driver has become the face of the socialist government in South America´s top oil exporter. Austin, TX - A Texas judge has ruled that the state may cut off funding to Planned Parenthood´s family planning programs for poor women. Attorney general spokeswoman Lauren Bean said Judge Gary Harger has ruled that Texas may exclude otherwise qualified doctors and clinics from receiving state funding just because they advocate for abortion rights. The state has long banned the use of state funds for abortion. At issue Monday was whether Planned Parenthood and other abortion-rights groups could continue to provide preventive health care to poor women as part of the Women´s

President Obama is Responsible

President Obama is responsible for our fiscal mess. I´m not exaggerating, and I´m not saying that simply because I think that Barack Obama is a terrible president, although I do think that he´s an awful president. I´m saying that because the president has had ample opportunity over the past four years to arrive at a compromise solution to our immediate fiscal problem and then to make headway toward dealing with our longer-term fiscal issues, but he has failed miserably. If the president had taken some of the advice of his own National Commission

Brace for impact because 2013 is not an election year, so Bacon Hill politicians will be up to their old tricks. You can count on the following helping next year: After months of Gov. Patrick galavanting around the country on behalf of the Obama campaign and failing to focus on the home front, the commonwealth is facing revenue problems. Instead of focusing on the heart of the economic problem, Deval and Bacon Hill leaders will raise our taxes. It is not a matter of if. It is a matter of when and how much.

Sources: ´Fiscal cliff´deal emerging

WASHINGTON — The contours of a deal to avert the ´fiscal cliff´ emerged Monday, with Democrats and Republicans agreeing to raise tax rates on family income over $450,000 a year, increase the estate tax rate and extend unemployment benefits for one year, officials familiar with the negotiations said. But with a midnight deadline rapidly approaching, both sides were at an impasse over whether to put off automatic, across-the-board spending cuts set to take effect on Jan. 1, and if so, how to pay for that. Democrats want to put off the cuts for one year and offset

In fact, Breitbart News has not opposed Boehner´s speakership as such, but has reported on possible challenges stemming from his apparent weakness in "fiscal cliff" negotiations with President Barack Obama, his purge of conservative members from key leadership positions, and his failure to unite the Republican caucus behind "Plan B" proposals to

A cable-news quip by Fox News contributor John Bolton is looking even more dubious following yesterday’s news that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had checked in to New York Presbyterian Hospital to treat a blood clot associated with a concussion she’d sustained earlier in December. That concussion kept Clinton from appearing at a Dec. 20 congressional hearing on Benghazi, a set of circumstances that triggered a certain meter of Bolton’s. In a Dec. 17 appearance on Fox News’s “On the Record,” he said:

Washington - As Americans brace for across-the-board tax hikes, President Obama is giving members of Congress -- and his No. 2 -- a pay raise. Obama signed an executive order last week that will lift a ban on pay freezes for federal employees. So who benefits? Vice President Biden, for starters. According to disclosure forms, Biden made $225,521 last year. After his raise which goes into effect March 27, 2013, he’ll be taking home $231,900. Rank-and-file members of Congress, meanwhile, will see a $900 bump -- up from $174,000. Congressional leaders will receive a slightly higher raise,

On the edge of the so-called “fiscal cliff,” Pentagon officials said Monday they could have to order furloughs for up to 800,000 civilian employees if lawmakers failed to cancel pending spending reductions. The military’s service chiefs, who have already been making cuts as part of a separate, long-term effort to wean down the defense budget, are now working to assess the impact of the congressionally mandated cuts if the White House and lawmakers fail to strike a last-minute deal. If no such agreement is reached before the end of 2012, the sweeping fiscal retrenchment would begin Wednesday.

Yesterday, the Republican leadership insisted there would be no fiscal cliff deal unless there was a cap on cost of living adjustments for social security. They were adamant - a deal killer. That was yesterday. By last night, that strong stance had melted like a stick of butter at a midsummer Grant Park picnic. The Hill: Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) said Social Security cuts are all but off the table. She said that the issue would be "a part of a larger debate," later in 2013 when Congress considers raising the debt-ceiling limit.

The top science reporter for NBC News raised questions Monday about Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s hospitalization, raising the possibility the blood clot causing isn’t linked to an earlier concussion. “It’s not exactly clear what is happening with Secretary Clinton’s health,” NBC News chief science and health correspondent Robert Bazell said. “All we have is a statement from her office. The hospital isn’t saying anything and the statement from her [office] says that she had this blood clot that stemmed from the concussion and she’s being treated with blood-thinning drugs,” Bazell continued.

Many ardent supporters of the Second Amendment are not quite so ardent about the First. And vice versa. A few days ago CNN host Piers Morgan got into it with the head of a gun-rights group. Now more than 87,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that Morgan, who is British, be deported for his “hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution.” But the First Amendment does not exempt British nationals, which means those signing the petition are also committing a hostile attack against the Constitution. The irony is probably lost on them.
