Guns are dangerous,

I don’t know anything about guns. I have no fascination with them, and no particular interest in them.Perhaps that stems from an incident when I was 12 years old and shot my best friend Stephen Folster in the base of the skull with a CO2 pellet gun that we were using to hunt sparrows in the now vanished woods on Filors Lane near Annie’s Snack Shack in Stony Point, N.Y. [SNIP]Guns, in other words, were not the problem; I was the problem.Which brings us forward 45 years to the raging debate about gun control that has ensued

CHICAGO — An Illinois state lawmaker who was considered a front-runner to replace Jesse Jackson Jr. in Congress ended his candidacy Saturday, saying he did not want the felony gun charges he is facing to detract from the important issues in the district. Democratic State Sen. Donne Trotter was arrested Dec. 5 when security screeners at Chicago´s O´Hare International Airport found an unloaded .25-caliber Beretta handgun and ammunition in his garment bag. He told officers the gun is for a job he has with a security firm and that he had forgotten it was in his bag.

With rebels advancing on the capital city of the Central African Republic, the U.S. has deployed about 50 combat troops to neighboring Chad to support the evacuation of U.S. Embassy personnel and American private citizens, President Obama notified Congress in a letter Saturday. Mr. Obama said he took the action "due to the deteriorating security situation in the Central African Republic and the potential threat to U.S. citizens." The evacuation of Americans from Bangui, Central African Republic, began on Thursday. The president said the troops, although equipped for combat, were deployed as a stand-by

It was designed to be the budget cut so painful, so indiscriminate, so downright mindless that even a gridlocked Congress wouldn’t allow it to happen. Now, it looks like it’s going to happen. Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) spent Saturday working on a last-ditch deal to spare the vast majority of Americans a dramatic tax increase on Jan. 1. But even if they reach a stripped-down agreement, aides in both parties have said it would be unlikely to address

As the day on which Sen. Dianne Feinstein´s (D-CA) "assault weapon" ban will be introduced draws closer, another troubling aspect of it has come to light – namely, that it will give new funding and expanded powers to the ATF for the purpose of registering all guns and gun owners in the country. In other words, in addition to banning "assault weapons" and handguns like Glocks, Sig Sauers, Smith & Wesson M&Ps, and H&Ks, the legislation will also empower the ATF to be sure every gun is placed on a government registry. I have fired guns only once in my life, on a stag party to the Czech capital Prague a few years ago when part of the itinerary included a trip to an indoor shooting range. For three hours, our group were let loose on everything from Magnum 45 handguns and Glock pistols, to high-powered ‘sniper’ rifles and pump-action shotguns. It was controlled, legal, safe and undeniably exciting. But it also showed me, quite demonstrably, that guns are killing machines. Rarely has the hideous effect of a gun been more acutely laid bare than at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut,

Robert Griffin III is not only taking the National Football League by storm, but the Washington Redskins rookie quarterback is already building himself a brand in the mold of Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Peyton Manning. To say Griffin’s play has been superb to date is selling him short. {Skip} “One advantage I believe he does have is the great education he received … and his military background and really strict upbringing,” he told CBSDC. “All of those things will really benefit him in the long run – [he is marketable] on and off the field.”

WTKK wouldn’t be turning off the lights next week if I could have just gotten over there back in 2007. No brag, just fact. And by the way, I’m still damn sorry I didn’t make good my escape from the AM band. But here in Massachusetts, in the halls of justice, the only justice is in the halls. And you wonder why I dismember so many state judges. Payback is a b****, you hacks. Still, WTKK’s failure is not the end of talk radio in Boston. Nature abhors a vacuum, and having no talk station on FM is a gaping hole.

In today´s chapter of "The Fiscal Cliff," Senate Leaders Reid and McConnell are working behind the scenes to craft a deal to meet Monday´s midnight deadline. Yesterday, President Obama met with congressional leaders, for the first time in six weeks, and urged the Senate to reach a deal over the weekend. If they failed to reach a deal, Obama warned, he would press them to put his original proposal before the Congress for an up or down vote. Obama´s original offer called for around $1.6 Trillion in new taxes, directed most of the new revenue to new spending

It was a cruel, cruel year — a year that kept raising our hopes, only to squash them flatter than a dead possum on the interstate. Example: This year the “reality” show Jersey Shore, which for six hideous seasons has been a compelling argument in favor of a major earth-asteroid collision, finally got canceled, and we dared to wonder if maybe, just maybe, we, as a society, were becoming slightly less stupid. But then, WHAP, we were slapped in our national face by the cold hard frozen mackerel of reality in the form of the hugely popular

The New York newspaper that drew criticism for publishing the names and addresses of hundreds of legal gun permit holders is doubling down by publishing the personal information of even more law-abiding gun owners. To great criticism, the Journal News published an interactive map showing the names and addresses of the legal gun owners in Westchester and Rockland counties just before Christmas. Now the paper has announced it will next publish the names and addresses of permit-holders in Putnam County with an eye toward eventually politicizing the names and addresses of every gun owner in the state.

The mystery staffer who invited Tampa socialite Jill Kelley to visit the White House is a special assistant to President Obama and an associate counsel focusing on national security issues. Mike Gottlieb, who has been with the administration since Obama took office, twice had breakfast with Kelley and her sister in the White House dining hall. White House officials confirmed last month that Kelley had visited a "mid-level staffer" but declined to name the staffer. Visitor log records released Friday identify Gottlieb. It´s unclear how Gottlieb met Kelley,

When “Dallas” returns for a second season later next month, at least five of the episodes will feature J.R. Ewing, also known (well, in real life) as Larry Hagman. I was curious to see how they’d handle the last days of J.R., since Hagman died Nov. 23 at the age of 81. Turns out they didn’t — handle it, I mean. J.R. Ewing returns as explosive, as mean, as scheming and as downright despicable as ever. Don’t expect a death scene with a fading old soldier.

Firefighters and other first responders are putting themselves at a serious risk for injury or even death when responding to hybrid and electric car crashes, an industry panel revealed this week. The danger comes with the increased size of those vehicles’ battery packs and becomes potentially deadly for those dealing with wrecked vehicles. Members of SAE International, formerly known as the Society of Automotive Engineers, said in a report that hybrid electric cars must be installed with industry-wide safety measures and warnings so rescue workers know ahead of time what they’re dealing with. It was the year when many long-dominant belief systems began to collapse. There could be few more apt epitaphs for the year now ending than a recollection of the headlines in April that greeted a stark warning from the Environment Agency. Fuelled by the predictions of the climate-change-obsessed Met Office (and the the official policy, since 2007, of the similarly fixated EU) that we will have “hotter, drier summers” for decades to come, the agency foretold that the drought conditions of the early spring were likely to last “until Christmas and perhaps beyond”. BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Birmingham lawyer Marcus Jones III got the miracle he was looking for this afternoon _ the delay of a trial so he could go to the BCS National Championship game in Miami on Jan. 7. His attendance at the game had looked doubtful earlier today. A judge had denied his first attempt earlier this month to have the trial delayed. Jones has been a self-described "fanatic" of University of Alabama football since his father took him to football games in the early 1960s as a young boy.

The site where Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting is building a new meetinghouse was damaged by arsonists during Christmas week, and police are now "absolutely" sure the attack was the result of a dispute between members of a Philadelphia construction union and the project´s nonunion contractor. Although no suspects have been identified in the Dec. 21 incident, Lt. George McClay of Northwest Detectives said Friday that he was certain the small Quaker building on East Mermaid Lane was targeted because it is being built with nonunion labor. "I absolutely think it is a union issue," McClay said.
